Find the security intelligence version
- Select Start and type Windows Security.
- Open the Windows Security app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection updates. Microsoft’s explanatory text may refer to this area as Virus & threat protection updates.
- Read the security intelligence version and update information shown. To have Windows check for a newer update, select Check for updates.
Microsoft’s current instructions describe security intelligence as the files containing information about the latest threats that Defender uses during scans. Windows normally downloads these updates through Windows Update; the in-app check is the manual option.

Which version number are you looking for?
“Signature version” and “definition version” are common ways of describing the threat information version. Microsoft’s current Windows Security terminology is security intelligence version. It is not the version number of the Windows Security app itself.

If you cannot find the version or Defender appears inactive
Check that you are in the right section
If you opened Settings > About, you are viewing the Windows Security app’s version. Return to Virus & threat protection > Protection updates for security intelligence. If the labels vary, use the Windows Security app rather than the separate app-version page.

Check which antivirus provider is active
Windows Defender Antivirus may automatically enter disabled mode when a non-Microsoft antivirus product is running. Windows Security may still be present, but do not assume Defender is the active antivirus provider on every PC. Microsoft explains this behavior in its guide to staying protected with Windows Security. If you are troubleshooting a specific antimalware package, its engine or signature package version may also be relevant; that is a different check from the security intelligence version shown in Protection updates.
