Samsung does not offer one universal check that can conclusively reveal every Galaxy phone’s refurbishment history. In the US, its repair workflow may flag a phone that appears to have been refurbished by an organization other than Samsung. You can also check identifiers, run Samsung diagnostics, review warranty information, and ask the seller for records—but each check answers a different question.
1. Check Samsung’s repair service information
Samsung’s US Request Repair and Check Repair Status workflow may display this message: “It appears your product has been refurbished by an organization other than Samsung. We will be unable to provide repairs and suggest you contact the place of purchase.” If you see it, contact the seller or place of purchase as Samsung advises.

This is a useful Samsung-specific signal, not a universal test: the absence of that message does not establish that the phone is new or that Samsung refurbished it. The cited workflow is for the United States. If you are elsewhere, consult Samsung support for your country.

Identifiers can help confirm that the handset matches the packaging and records you have, but they do not reveal a complete repair or refurbishment history.

- Find the IMEI or serial number using a method supported by your phone. Samsung lists the handset, packaging, carrier account, bill of sale, Samsung Members, and dialing
*#06#as possible places to check; options vary by device and carrier. - Compare the identifier shown on the phone with the packaging and purchase documents, where available.
- If the identifiers do not match, ask the seller or carrier to explain the difference before relying on the phone’s records.
A match supports consistency between the device and the records you checked. It does not prove who previously owned the phone, whether it was repaired, or whether it was refurbished. See Samsung’s US repair and service page for its identifier guidance.
3. Run Samsung’s built-in diagnostics
Samsung Members can test supported phone functions. Open the Samsung Members app, choose Support, then Phone diagnostics. Select Test all for the available checks or choose an individual test. Samsung also documents this route on Galaxy devices running Android 12 or later: Settings > Device care > Diagnostics > Phone diagnostics > Test all. Names and layouts can vary by model and software version. Follow Samsung’s diagnostics instructions if the options differ.

A passed test means the function tested reported no issue at that moment. It does not establish that the phone’s parts are original, that it is factory-new, or that it has never been refurbished. The number of available tests can depend on model and market; Samsung’s August 2022 article described 27 testable features at that time, not a current universal count. After signing in to a Samsung account, check My Products for the product and warranty information Samsung has recorded. This can help with service follow-up, but warranty status by itself does not identify a phone as refurbished. Samsung’s US My Page support says that if the warranty date is incorrect, you can submit proof of purchase for review.

5. Ask the seller for the phone’s history
If you are buying the phone—or deciding whether to keep it—ask the seller for documentation rather than treating a diagnostic or cosmetic check as proof of its history.
- Request a receipt and a clear description of whether the phone was sold as new, used, or refurbished.
- Ask whether repairs or replacement parts are disclosed and whether service documentation is available.
- Get the return policy and any seller warranty terms in writing before your return window closes.
Visible wear can inform your decision, but appearance alone cannot establish whether hidden repairs were made or which parts are installed. The checks above cannot certify unseen repair history without reliable service documentation.
