You can repurpose some older Samsung Galaxy phones for lightweight desktop or command-line tasks, but they are not universal Raspberry Pi replacements. Use Samsung DeX for a supported external-display workspace, Termux for command-line tools, or a community PRoot setup for a Linux-style desktop. The right choice depends on your exact Galaxy model and whether your project needs peripherals, board-specific hardware, or reliable unattended operation.
Choose the right approach for your project
| Approach | Best suited to | What it provides | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung DeX | Using Android apps on a monitor with keyboard and mouse | A desktop-style Android interface on supported devices | External-display support and DeX modes vary by Galaxy model |
| Termux | Shell commands, development tools, and lightweight command-line tasks | An Android terminal with installable tools such as Git and Node.js | It is an Android-hosted environment, not a native Raspberry Pi OS installation |
| Rootless Linux desktop | Experimenting with a graphical Linux userspace | A community setup combining PRoot, XFCE, and Termux:X11 | Compatibility and peripheral access can require troubleshooting |
These are different ways to use Android, not interchangeable versions of a Raspberry Pi. Compare your required apps, attached hardware, setup effort, and need for unattended operation before choosing.

Check your Galaxy model before buying accessories
Do not assume that every old Samsung phone supports DeX or wired video output. Samsung’s current US DeX support information lists supported device families, model exclusions, and software-version limits for DeX on PC. Its DeX setup instructions describe the external-display and input-device setup, including compatible HDMI adapters for specified devices.

- Check Samsung’s current compatibility information for the DeX mode you want: wired, wireless, or DeX on PC.
- Confirm that the phone supports the required external-display connection before purchasing a hub or adapter. A hub cannot add video output to an incompatible phone.
- Check that your Android version, display, adapter, and peripherals match the intended setup.
Use DeX for a monitor-based Android workspace
DeX is the most direct option if your goal is to use Android apps on a larger screen. Samsung describes it as a PC-like experience using phone apps on an external display. For the wired workflow, its setup guidance describes connecting an HDMI display and pairing a keyboard and mouse over Bluetooth or USB; compatible adapters vary by supported device.

A powered USB-C hub with HDMI can be useful when a compatible phone needs a display connection, charging, and USB peripherals at once. Verify the exact phone and adapter compatibility first. Samsung also distinguishes which devices support wired DeX, wireless DeX, and DeX on PC, so check the mode you actually plan to use rather than relying on a general claim that a Galaxy supports DeX.
Use Termux for command-line tools
Termux provides a terminal and Linux-style command-line environment within Android. The Raspberry Pi documentation’s Termux example recommends installing Termux from GitHub or F-Droid rather than using the deprecated Google Play build. It demonstrates updating packages and installing Node.js and Git, as well as granting permission before accessing shared Android storage.

- CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5
- CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
- CanaKit Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized
This can suit lightweight command-line work when the tools you need run in Termux. It does not turn the phone into a Raspberry Pi or install a conventional Linux distribution directly on the hardware. Check that your specific application and dependencies work in Android’s environment before building a project around it.
Try a rootless Linux desktop if you need a graphical Linux environment
The community Termux Desktops project documents a rootless Arch Linux ARM userspace running in PRoot, with XFCE displayed through Termux:X11. Its instructions describe using the desktop alongside Samsung DeX. This remains a Linux userspace hosted by Android, not a replacement operating system booted in place of Android.

- CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit
The project recommends a 64-bit ARM Android device, current Termux and Termux:X11, at least 5 GB of free storage, and a keyboard and mouse for desktop use. It is independent of Samsung and invites device-specific compatibility reports, so treat the instructions as a community configuration rather than official Samsung support.
Know what a phone may not replace
The documented approaches support selected desktop and command-line uses, but they do not establish that a phone can handle every Raspberry Pi project. In particular, do not assume it can access GPIO, run Pi-specific drivers, or behave predictably as an unattended service host. The Android-hosted environment and device-dependent USB behavior limit what can be inferred.

The Termux Desktops project warns that a USB device recognized by Android may not appear inside its Linux environment as a conventional device such as /dev/ttyUSB*. If your project depends on a sensor, serial adapter, or other attached hardware, verify access in the exact environment you plan to use before relying on it.
Set up the essentials for your chosen path
For DeX
- A Galaxy model that supports the DeX mode you intend to use.
- An HDMI display and a compatible adapter for the wired setup described by Samsung.
- A USB or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse if you need desktop-style input.
For Termux
- Termux installed from GitHub or F-Droid, following the cited Raspberry Pi documentation’s recommendation.
- Enough free storage for the tools and packages you plan to install.
- Explicit Android permission for shared storage if your tasks need to access it.
For a rootless desktop
- A 64-bit ARM Android device and at least 5 GB of free storage, as recommended by the community project.
- Termux, Termux:X11, and a willingness to troubleshoot a community-maintained configuration.
- A keyboard and mouse for practical desktop use.
Decide whether it is a good substitute
A phone is worth trying when your task can run in Android or Termux and does not depend on predictable low-level hardware access. DeX is a sensible starting point for a screen-and-keyboard workspace; Termux is the simpler route for shell tools; the PRoot desktop is for people who specifically want to experiment with a graphical Linux userspace.

If your project needs GPIO, a particular Pi driver, or dependable attached-device access, the phone is not established as a drop-in replacement. Test your exact model, software, and peripherals before committing to it for a project that must keep running unattended.
