There is no single best squad for every tactics game. Build around the mission: identify what the group must accomplish, check the game’s rules and likely threats, then choose units and positions that cover those needs without leaving a dangerous gap elsewhere.
Start with the mission, not a favorite lineup
Before selecting units, read the objective and the rules that shape the deployment. Check how many units you can bring, where they can move, what hazards or enemies matter, and whether a defeat or casualty has lasting consequences. The same roster can be excellent for holding ground and poor for reaching an objective quickly.

Give the squad one clear primary job: for example, scout and initiate safely, hold a position, break a defensive line, protect a vulnerable unit, or reach an objective. A guide to Symphony of War: The Nephilim Saga recommends building around a main role while leaving room for related tasks; its advice applies to that game, not as a universal class formula (Tactics Games’ Squad Building guide).

Once the purpose is clear, list the functions the squad needs to perform. Depending on the game and encounter, those might include dealing damage, absorbing or avoiding attacks, healing, scouting, moving quickly, controlling space, or interacting with an objective. Do not assume every squad needs one unit from every category: the game’s rules and the mission determine which functions are essential.

XCOM 2 shows how different classes can cover distinct jobs. Its manual describes Rangers as specialists in stealth or close-range combat, Specialists as using a Gremlin for healing, bonuses, or hacking, Grenadiers as focused on explosives or heavy weapons, and Sharpshooters as specializing in long-range attacks or pistols. Treat these as examples of role coverage in XCOM 2, not a template for another game (Feral Interactive’s XCOM 2 manual).
Match the lineup to the threats and terrain
Consider what the encounter can punish: exposed units, limited movement, attacks from particular ranges, or threats to the back line. Use only counters supported by the game’s mechanics. For example, the Symphony of War guide discusses firearm and magical threats, assassins that attack the back line, ranged attacks, ambushes, cavalry, and area attacks. Those details are specific to that game; another tactics game may use entirely different threat and counter systems (Squad Building; Core Squads).

- Word guessing game for children and adults which includes 2 sets of cards to allow people of all skill levels to play together
- Time to play: 45 minutes +
- Contents: 300 "family" cards, 180 "adult" cards, 20 "WILD" cards, 1 sand timer, 8 player pawns, Game board with spinner base and arrow
Positioning is part of composition, not a separate afterthought. In Symphony of War, the guide recommends safer positions for fragile healers and mages against some threats, while noting that area damage can still put them at risk. In XCOM 2, the manual says cover reduces the chance of being hit and a flanked soldier is especially vulnerable. A lineup that looks balanced on paper can fail if its formation exposes the unit it depends on.
Account for action economy and lasting losses
Rules can change how much value a role provides. In XCOM 2, each soldier has two action points per turn, according to the manual. It also says concealment can be used to prepare an ambush and gives the instruction: “Use concealment to set up ambushes and engage the enemy on your terms.” These are game-specific tactics, so check the relevant game’s own action and concealment rules before applying them elsewhere.

XCOM 2 also permanently removes soldiers killed in combat from the squad, as stated in its manual. That makes preserving experienced soldiers and maintaining a deeper roster meaningful considerations in that game. Other tactics games may handle casualties, replacement units, or progression differently.
Choose between specialization and flexibility
A focused squad may excel at its assigned task but struggle when the encounter demands something else. A flexible squad can answer a wider range of surprises, but its members may be less optimized for a narrow job. Neither approach is automatically superior: weigh the risk of an unusual encounter against the cost of giving up specialization, and consider whether another squad or reserve unit can cover the gap.

The Symphony of War companion guide presents focused options such as ranged, cannon, anti-firearm, anti-mage, mixed-defense, ambush, cavalry, healing-support, and flying-dragon squads. These are examples of game-specific builds and tradeoffs, not evidence that one composition has a universal win-rate advantage (Core Squads).

| Criterion | Question |
|---|---|
| Mission fit | Can this lineup complete the objective within deployment and movement constraints? |
| Threat coverage | Can it respond to the enemies or hazards that matter in this encounter? |
| Role overlap and gaps | Are necessary jobs covered, or does one role take space from a more important need? |
| Resilience | Can the group recover from damage, a lost unit, or a bad engagement under this game’s rules? |
| Mobility and positioning | Can the units reach useful terrain and keep vulnerable members protected? |
| Flexibility | Can this squad handle an unexpected task, or does another squad cover that contingency? |
| Opportunity cost | What useful capability are you giving up by choosing this unit, equipment, or formation? |
Reassess as the roster and rules change
Review the lineup after promotions, new abilities, equipment changes, or a shift in game mode or mission type. A unit that once filled one job may gain new options as it progresses. The XCOM 2 manual notes that classes gain unique abilities and additional abilities as soldiers rise in rank, so a squad’s original role balance need not remain fixed.
