First identify which notes app and account held the note; then check folders and sync before trying any reset or device restore. A note may be archived, deleted, stored under another account, not synced, or protected by a lock password—and each case has a different recovery path.
Start with safe checks before changing anything
Pause before erasing a device, resetting it, restoring a whole-device backup, or installing recovery software. Those actions can affect newer data, and the official guidance below does not establish that they recover notes after permanent deletion.

- Identify the app and account. Check which notes app you used, which device created the note, and which Apple, Google, or Samsung account is signed in.
- Confirm sync is enabled. In the app or device account settings, verify that Notes is enabled for the account where you expect the note. A note stored locally or under another account may not appear in the current account’s list.
- Search and inspect folders. Search distinctive words from the title or body where supported. Check Archive, Recently Deleted, Trash or Bin, other folders, and the app’s locked-note list.
- Restore only from the app’s own deleted-items folder. If the note is there and still within the service’s retention period, use its Restore or Move action.
- For a locked note, try its original lock password or an already configured biometric unlock. An account-password reset is not the same as unlocking a note.
If these checks do not find the note, check other devices signed in to the same account and the service’s official support guidance. Permanent deletion or an expired recovery window may put recovery outside the documented self-service options.

Restore from Recently Deleted on iPhone
Open Notes and go to the folder list. Tap Recently Deleted, select the note, and move it to a folder. Apple says deleted notes remain in Recently Deleted for 30 days before permanent removal. The folder appears only when it contains notes. See Apple’s iPhone Notes recovery instructions.

Restore from iCloud.com

Find a note that only appears to be missing
Apple’s support article, published May 26, 2026, recommends checking that Notes is enabled for the relevant third-party account, searching with All Accounts selected, and checking Recently Deleted for iCloud notes. For a third-party account, look in its Bin in Mail as well as in Notes folders. Search may find only the title of a locked note, so inspect locked notes manually if title search does not locate it. Follow Apple’s missing-notes checks for the current device guidance.

A shared note has a special case: if you delete a shared note you do not own, it disappears from your list rather than going to your Recently Deleted folder; it remains in the owner’s and other participants’ lists.
What to do if you forgot an Apple Notes lock password
On Apple’s documented Mac Notes behavior, a forgotten lock password cannot be replaced by resetting the Notes password for notes that were already locked. Apple states: “If you forget your password and can’t use Touch ID to unlock your notes, you can’t view your locked notes.” Resetting the password changes the password used for future notes; existing locked notes keep the password that was in effect when each was locked. See Apple’s Mac Notes lock guidance. This is version-specific Mac documentation, so check Apple’s current instructions for your operating system.

Recover an archived or deleted Google Keep note
Google Keep treats archiving and deletion differently. An archived note can be unarchived; a deleted note goes to Trash. In the computer guide, Google says a note can be restored from Trash for seven days: open Trash and choose Restore. Emptying Trash permanently deletes its contents. Interface labels and steps may differ by device; see Google Keep’s computer instructions.
Locked or missing notes in Samsung Notes
Samsung says a locked note cannot be viewed or edited without entering its password. If you cannot sign in to your Samsung account, resetting that account password addresses account access; Samsung does not describe it as a way to bypass a note lock. Its FAQ also describes syncing notes with other Galaxy devices. Check those devices and the Samsung account used for sync, but do not assume a particular deleted-note retention period: the cited FAQ does not establish one. See Samsung’s Notes FAQ.

Know when self-service recovery may not be available
Recovery depends on where the note was stored, whether it was archived or deleted, the service’s retention rules, and whether a lock credential still works. Apple’s cited flows do not recover notes after permanent removal from Recently Deleted, and Google says emptying Trash permanently deletes its contents. The cited Samsung FAQ does not specify a deleted-note recovery window. For other apps, backups, or device versions, consult that provider’s current official support information; these services’ rules should not be generalized to every notes app.
