Build a reusable base prompt, choose a strong image as a reference, and change only one planned detail at a time. This makes a set of generated images easier to steer and compare, but it does not guarantee identical characters, brands, or other recurring elements.
Start with a reusable visual anchor
Before generating variations, write down what defines the image and what can change. OpenAI’s image-prompting guidance recommends clear instructions for both the elements to preserve and the changes to make. Its ChatGPT image-creation guidance also notes that concise prompts can work when they contain the key details.

- Subject and defining attributes: the same friendly gardener, with a round face, short silver hair, green glasses, and a rust-red apron.
- Setting and action: working in a small urban garden; specify the particular task or location for each variation.
- Style and palette: flat, hand-drawn shapes in muted greens, cream, and rust.
- Composition and constraints: waist-up framing, clear silhouette, no text, and space at the top for a heading.
Keep the stable details together so you can reuse them without rewording. Add the one scene, pose, or lighting change you want to test separately. If framing, lighting, or output dimensions matter, include them in the anchor too.

Choose a reference and assign each image a role
Generate a starting image, then select the one that best captures the subject and visual language you want to carry forward. Use it as a reference for later scenes or edits where your chosen tool supports that workflow. For a recurring character, repeat key details—appearance, proportions, clothing, and palette—in the new prompt rather than assuming the reference will preserve them perfectly.
If you provide multiple images, state what each one is for. For example, identify one image as the edit target and another as a style reference. If a reference is meant to guide composition or structure rather than appearance, say so plainly. Adobe documents style references for carrying an aesthetic across assets and composition references for additional structural guidance in Firefly; those controls are specific to its products and workflow.

Make one change at a time
Keep the base prompt and relevant settings fixed while testing a single variable, such as pose, background, or lighting. This makes it easier to tell whether that change produced the intended result. OpenAI’s image guidance recommends stepwise revisions and narrow edit instructions: name what should change and what should stay as it is.

- Generate the anchor: use the reusable prompt to create a starting image.
- Pick the intended variation: decide whether you are changing the pose, setting, lighting, or another feature.
- Keep the rest fixed: reuse the prompt, reference, and relevant settings, changing only the chosen variable.
- Inspect the result: compare it with the anchor for identity, style, palette, framing, and other locked details.
- Correct narrowly: ask for a specific adjustment—for example, “Keep the same character, clothing, palette, and framing; change only the background to a greenhouse.”
If an output drifts, do not rewrite the entire prompt by default. First try a targeted edit or strengthen the reference and the exact details that matter. A full rewrite changes many instructions at once and makes it harder to identify what caused the difference.

Keep settings stable when comparing images
For a useful comparison, hold the model, prompt, references, dimensions, quality, and other relevant controls constant unless one of them is the variable you are testing. Check the selected product’s documentation to confirm which controls are available and how they behave.
A seed can help reproduce or refine an image in some workflows, but it is not a universal consistency switch. Adobe’s Firefly API guidance says that, in its documented API workflow, using the same seed, prompt, and other presets generates the same image; it also describes seeds as a way to limit variations while honing an image. That statement applies to that Firefly API workflow and should not be assumed to describe other products or interfaces.

Review the set for visual drift
Compare each output with the anchor using a short checklist. Decide in advance which features are essential and which can vary:
- Identity: are the character’s face, proportions, hair, and defining features still recognizable?
- Wardrobe and objects: did clothing, accessories, or important props change unexpectedly?
- Palette and style: do the colors, line quality, and visual treatment belong to the same set?
- Composition: are framing, orientation, and reserved text space still suitable?
- Requested change: did the intended variation appear without unrelated changes?
Keep successful outputs that make useful references for the next image. If a failure is limited to one detail, request a precise correction; if the overall style or identity has shifted, try a stronger reference and restate the stable attributes. OpenAI cautions that recurring elements can remain inconsistent, so reference images and careful prompts are aids—not locks.

What this workflow can and cannot ensure
A reusable prompt, a good reference, and controlled edits make variations more coherent and easier to evaluate. They do not ensure pixel-identical results or perfect continuity across every generation. The degree of control depends on the tool’s reference, editing, and repeatability features, as well as how consistently it follows instructions.
OpenAI documents reference-based prompting and editing, while Adobe documents style, composition, and seed controls for Firefly. These examples illustrate different controls; they do not establish a comprehensive ranking of image generators or a controlled comparison of their consistency.
