For persistent winter rain, sleet, wet snow or exposed storm conditions, choose a waterproof breathable shell. A water-resistant jacket is usually the more comfortable, mobile option when precipitation is light and you do not expect a prolonged storm. Neither type automatically keeps you warm: insulation comes from the layers underneath, so choose warmth and weather protection separately.
Water-resistant or waterproof: which suits your winter?
| What you expect | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Persistent rain, wet snow, sleet or storm exposure | Waterproof breathable shell | It is intended for stronger protection from precipitation and wind. Patagonia says a waterproof outer layer is vital for heavy snowfall or persistent wet winter conditions; this is the company’s weather guidance, not an independent comparative test. Patagonia’s cold-weather layering guide. |
| Light precipitation, high movement, and no expected prolonged storm | Water-resistant soft shell | It may offer a more comfortable, mobile outer layer when full storm protection is unnecessary. Patagonia describes soft shells as water-resistant through an exterior DWR finish. Patagonia’s cold-weather layering guide. |
| Cold, dry weather when rain protection is not needed | Wind shell or another suitable outer layer | Use the outer layer for the conditions; get warmth from your base and midlayers. Patagonia’s cold-weather layering guide. |
“Water-resistant” does not mean a jacket can never get wet, and “waterproof” does not mean unlimited protection in every condition. Check the garment’s construction, coverage and care instructions, and consider how long and how hard precipitation is expected to fall.
What waterproof breathable means—and what it cannot promise
A waterproof-breathable jacket uses a membrane or coating that resists liquid water while allowing some water vapor to move outward. Rain droplets are much larger than sweat vapor, which helps explain how the two functions can coexist. But breathability is not a guarantee that you will feel dry: strenuous activity can produce heat and humidity faster than the jacket can release them, and the inside may feel damp. REI explains the trade-off in its guide to how rain gear works.
DWR is the surface finish, not the waterproof barrier
Durable water repellent (DWR) is applied to the face fabric to help water bead and run off. The membrane or coating beneath is the part that resists water reaching the inside. Dirt, oils, abrasion and use can wear down DWR, allowing the face fabric to wet out. That can make the jacket feel cold and reduce breathability even if the membrane is still blocking water. REI’s rain-gear explanation distinguishes the face-fabric finish from the waterproof layer.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A wet-looking outside does not by itself prove the jacket has failed
If water stops beading on the outer fabric, the DWR may need care or replenishment. The underlying waterproof barrier may still be working. If you are not getting wet inside, do not assume that exterior darkening alone means the membrane has failed; check the garment and its care needs first. See REI’s DWR care guidance.
How to compare jackets for your actual use
Before choosing between two garments, match their details to your weather, activity and layers rather than relying on the label alone.

Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Precipitation and exposure: Consider whether you expect a passing shower or prolonged rain, wet snow or sleet, and whether wind will drive precipitation against you.
- Movement and ventilation: Hard exertion can overwhelm a breathable shell’s ability to release moisture. Consider how you will regulate effort and let heat escape.
- Fit over insulation: Try the shell over the base and midlayers you plan to wear. A shell should fit over them without restricting movement.
- Coverage and construction: Compare hood, cuffs and hem coverage, as well as ventilation and the garment’s construction. Protection depends on more than the fabric label.
- Care: Check the care label and consider whether you are willing to clean and, when needed, reproof the garment.
Brand-specific ratings and standards are not universal pass/fail thresholds for all winter jackets. For example, Patagonia describes its H₂No Performance Standard as a company testing process, not a particular fabric technology. Its page says the process includes a “Killer Wash” test in which material is subjected to 20,000 mm of water pressure and then checked to maintain a 10,000 mm water rating. Those are figures for Patagonia’s stated process, not general industry requirements or proof that one jacket will suit every winter condition. Patagonia’s H₂No Performance Standard.
Check DWR before replacing a jacket
- Test the outer fabric. Sprinkle or spray water onto the shell. Beading and runoff suggest the finish is working; water sitting on the surface and darkening the fabric suggests the face fabric is wetting out. See REI’s DWR care guidance.
- Clean it according to the care label. Dirt and oils can interfere with the finish. Use the garment’s care instructions rather than guessing at a wash method.
- Retest after washing and drying. If water still does not bead, consider replenishing the DWR with an appropriate treatment, following the garment and product instructions. Patagonia’s care guide says, “If water still doesn’t bead up on your shell after a wash and dry, then it’s time to re-proof it.” Patagonia’s waterproof-jacket care guide.
- Do not treat DWR as a membrane repair. Reproofing addresses the surface finish; it is not a fix for a damaged waterproof membrane or coating.
Care intervals vary by garment and finish. Patagonia’s Aug. 20, 2026 care guide gives a rule of thumb of washing garments made without PFAS after 7–10 wears and garments with PFAS typically after 30 wears. These are Patagonia’s guidance, not universal intervals; the garment care label takes priority. Patagonia’s care guide.

Choose warmth separately from weather protection
A shell blocks weather; it does not necessarily provide insulation. Build warmth with a base layer and midlayer, then make sure the shell fits over them. Patagonia’s cold-weather layering guidance treats the shell and insulating layers as separate parts of a system. This lets you adjust insulation to temperature and activity without choosing a heavier outer layer than the weather requires.
As one product example—not a ranking or independent endorsement—Patagonia describes the Torrentshell 3L Rain Jacket as a waterproof rain jacket for soaking storms and steady drizzle, with a DWR-treated face fabric, polyurethane membrane and tricot backer. That example illustrates how a waterproof jacket can combine a water-shedding outer finish with a separate barrier. Patagonia’s H₂No page.
