Bose SoundLink Max FAQ: Battery Life, Charging, Durability and Connectivity

Bose rates the SoundLink Max for up to 20 hours at moderate volume, but real runtime depends on use. Learn about USB-C charging, IP67 limits and connectivity.

The Bose SoundLink Max is rated for up to 20 hours of playback at moderate volume, but Bose’s maximum-volume test lasted up to 3 hours. It charges over USB-C, has an IP67 rating for accidental dust and water exposure, and supports Bluetooth multipoint for two connected source devices. Here are the practical limits and details behind those specifications.

How long does the Bose SoundLink Max battery last?

Bose specifies up to 20 hours at a moderate volume level and up to 3 hours at maximum volume. These are Bose test results, not guaranteed runtimes for every listening session. In Bose’s owner’s guide, the 20-hour test used Bluetooth A2DP audio at 65% volume; the 3-hour test used Bluetooth A2DP at 100% volume. Both tests used default EQ, a temperature of 68–77°F (20–25°C), a mix of Top 50 Global tracks as of October 2023, and no external-device charging. Bose’s owner’s guide documents those conditions.

Actual battery life varies with volume, audio content and temperature. Charging a phone from the speaker also draws on its battery, so do not expect the playback-test figures while powering another device. Bose lists its headline runtimes in the SoundLink Max specifications.

How do you charge the SoundLink Max?

Charge the speaker through its USB-C port. Bose recommends the included USB-C cable or a similar cable and power supply capable of at least 5V/3A. With a 3A/15W supply, a full charge takes up to 5 hours; charging time can vary with the supply used. While charging, the power light slowly blinks white. It glows solid white when the battery is full. See Bose’s battery-charging instructions.

  • Check what is in the box: Bose lists a USB-C cable and a USB-C power supply for the US; the power supply is not available in all regions. Do not assume an adapter is included everywhere.
  • Overnight charging: Bose says the battery’s automatic cut-off prevents overcharging after a full charge; leaving the speaker plugged in overnight will not overcharge it.

Is the SoundLink Max waterproof and dustproof?

Bose rates the speaker IP67. Its product information describes protection against dust and accidental water exposure, including immersion to approximately 3 feet (1 meter) for up to 30 minutes. Treat that as accidental-exposure protection, not permission to use the speaker underwater: Bose explicitly says it is not designed for playback when wet. If it gets wet, wait until it is dry before playing audio. The rating and caveat are described on the Bose SoundLink Max product page.

How does SoundLink Max connect to devices?

The speaker supports Bluetooth 5.4, with a listed range of up to 30 feet (9 meters), and also has a 3.5 mm audio input. Bluetooth range is a stated maximum; obstacles and the environment can affect the connection. Bose’s product specifications and FAQ provide these connection details.

Bluetooth multipoint and saved devices

Multipoint lets the SoundLink Max keep two paired source devices connected and switch to the active source. The speaker can store up to six devices in its pairing memory. To clear that list, Bose says to hold the Bluetooth button for 15 seconds.

Pairing two SoundLink Max speakers

Bose says two SoundLink Max speakers can be paired in Stereo Mode for left and right channels, or Party Mode for shared playback. This pairing guidance applies specifically to two SoundLink Max units; it should not be taken as a promise of compatibility with any Bose speaker.

Can the SoundLink Max charge a phone?

Yes. Connect a phone to the speaker’s USB-C port to draw power from the SoundLink Max’s built-in battery. Because the speaker then powers an external device as well as playback, phone charging affects battery performance and reduces the energy available for listening. Bose does not state a phone-charging runtime in the cited product information.
