How to Turn a Website into Editable Figma Layers with html.to.design

Import public webpages through the html.to.design plugin, or capture private and session-specific pages with its browser extension. Learn file-format caveats and what to inspect after import.

To bring a website into Figma as editable layers, use the html.to.design plugin’s Web tab for a page with a public URL. For a page that requires a login, a VPN, or a particular browser session, use the html.to.design browser extension and send its capture to the plugin or import a local .h2d file. This is not simply pasting a flat screenshot: the vendor describes the result as editable Figma design layers, but does not guarantee a perfect match for every site.

What the import does—and what it does not

html.to.design consists of a Figma plugin and a browser extension. Its vendor says they convert websites into editable Figma designs, and lists options such as creating local text and color styles, auto layout, and font mapping or replacement. The result is a Figma representation of a page, rather than one flat bitmap layer; expect to inspect and adjust the imported design rather than assume every detail will reproduce exactly.

The product also documents desktop, tablet, and mobile viewports, light and dark themes, and importing a single page or a full site. These are available capabilities, not a promise that every responsive state, interaction, or page will import identically. The vendor’s product description is at html.to.design, and its guide explains the workflow at How to import a website to Figma.

Import a public website URL

  1. In Figma, open Actions with ⌘K on Mac or the equivalent shortcut for your system.
  2. Search for html.to.design under Plugins & widgets, then run the plugin.
  3. Choose the plugin’s Web tab.
  4. Paste the page’s public URL. Choose the viewport and theme you want to import, and review the available import options.
  5. Start the import. Once the page appears on the Figma canvas, inspect the layers and make any design corrections you need.

This route is for pages the plugin can reach at an open URL. If the page is behind a login, only works on a private network, or must be captured in a specific signed-in state, use the extension workflow instead.

Capture a private or session-specific page

  1. Open the page in your browser and sign in, connect to the required network, or set up the page state you need.
  2. Open the html.to.design browser extension and choose a full-page capture or a selection.
  3. Send the capture directly to the Figma plugin, or download it as a local .h2d file.
  4. For a downloaded file, open the plugin’s Extension tab or drop the .h2d file into the plugin.

The extension documentation says a locally saved .h2d file stays on your computer and does not reach the service’s servers. That statement applies to the local-file option; it should not be assumed to describe the direct handoff route. See the vendor’s browser extension documentation.

Choose the right import route

Situation Recommended route What to know
Page has a public URL Plugin, Web tab Paste the URL and select viewport and theme.
Page needs a login, VPN, or live browser session Browser extension Capture the signed-in page or a selected portion, then send it to the plugin or save a local file.
You already have a webpage file or bundle Plugin, File tab Use .h2d when possible; other formats may depend on external assets being available.

Import local webpage files

The plugin’s File tab supports .h2d, HTML or HTM, ZIP bundles containing webpage assets, email formats, and MHTML or MHT. The vendor recommends .h2d because it contains the information needed to recreate the webpage. An HTML file may refer to images, stylesheets, or scripts hosted elsewhere; if those resources are unavailable, the imported page can be incomplete. ZIP imports must be smaller than 32 MB, according to the vendor’s local-file documentation: Import local files.

Work with the imported design

After import, expand the layer tree and review the areas you plan to edit. html.to.design lists local text and color styles, auto layout, font mapping or replacement, and support for complex gradients among its features. Its documentation also lists prototype-related options. These vendor-described features can help with follow-up design work, but imported structure and visual fidelity depend on the source page; plan time to correct fonts, spacing, assets, and other details that matter to your design.

If you need several responsive versions, import the relevant desktop, tablet, or mobile viewports and the desired light or dark theme as separate variants. A static import does not itself reproduce the site’s interactive behavior.

Limits and plan details to check

As listed on the vendor’s homepage when accessed on October 3, 2026, the free plan permits up to 10 imports every 30 days. The vendor’s features documentation states 1,000 imports per month under the Pro plan’s unlimited-import fair-use policy. Those are plan-specific figures, not general performance guarantees, and plan terms can change. Check the current homepage and features page before choosing a plan.

Troubleshooting common import problems

  • The URL import cannot show the right page: The page may require authentication or access to a private network. Open it in your browser and capture it with the extension while signed in.
  • Some images, fonts, or styling are missing from a local import: The HTML may refer to external resources that are not accessible during import. Use a self-contained .h2d capture when available, or ensure the referenced resources are included and reachable.
  • The ZIP file is rejected: Confirm that the bundle is smaller than the documented 32 MB limit and contains the webpage assets it needs.
  • The result does not match the live page exactly: Verify the chosen viewport and theme, then review the imported layers and assets. The vendor describes editable output, not guaranteed pixel-perfect reproduction.
  • You need only part of a logged-in page: Use the extension’s selection capture rather than importing the entire page.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a flat screenshot file rather than editable Figma layers, ScreenshotNeo can return a website screenshot with one GET request. It is a screenshot API and MCP server, not a replacement for html.to.design’s webpage-to-layer import. ScreenshotNeo says it accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I turn a website screenshot into editable Figma layers?

With html.to.design, the documented workflow imports a webpage into Figma layers; it is not the same as placing a flat screenshot image on the canvas.

Can I import a page that is behind a login?

Yes. The documented route is to open the page in your browser and capture it with the html.to.design extension.

Is ScreenshotNeo an alternative to html.to.design?

Only if you want a screenshot file or PDF. ScreenshotNeo captures pages; it does not perform html.to.design’s webpage-to-editable-layers import.
