Yes, in principle—but a Raspberry Pi 5 is not a proven 24/7 streaming appliance. YouTube can receive a prerecorded video sent as a live feed, but the Pi 5 uses software video encoders, and neither Raspberry Pi nor YouTube certifies uninterrupted prerecorded looping on this board. Whether the setup is practical depends on the video and audio formats, whether the video can be passed through without re-encoding, and the stability of the Pi’s power, cooling, storage, and internet connection.
There is a separate catch: YouTube says a stream that runs longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A feed can remain live without producing a complete replay archive.

What the Raspberry Pi 5 can—and cannot—be expected to do
Raspberry Pi documentation says the Pi 5 “uses software video encoders.” In its rpicam-vid camera-streaming context, Raspberry Pi says the low-latency setup can achieve 1080p30, while noting trade-offs in coding efficiency, processor-core use, and maximum frame rate. That is useful context, not a guarantee for a different workload: looping a prerecorded file, converting its audio, resizing it, or adding overlays can involve different processing demands.
If a file already has compatible video and audio and the chosen software can pass the encoded video through, avoiding video re-encoding may reduce processor work. That is a conditional technical possibility, not a guarantee for every file or workflow. Any conversion, filter, or overlay can add load, so test the complete pipeline you intend to use.

- Includes Raspberry Pi 5 with 2.4Ghz 64-bit quad-core CPU (8GB RAM)
- Includes 128GB Micro SD Card pre-loaded with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader
- CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5
- CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan

The official guidance establishes neither a tested Raspberry Pi 5 recipe for endlessly looping a prerecorded file nor a 24/7 uptime result. Treat local operation as something to validate on your own hardware rather than a set-and-forget promise.
Choose a YouTube-compatible stream profile
YouTube accepts RTMP or RTMPS ingestion. Its current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video at up to 60 fps; for RTMP/RTMPS, audio may be AAC or MP3. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and RTMPS for encrypted transport. For stereo audio it lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.

The following H.264 rates are YouTube ingestion guidance, not evidence that a Pi 5 can encode every profile continuously:

Use a profile your upload connection can sustain with headroom, and begin conservatively if the Pi must encode the video in software. A lower resolution or frame rate can reduce the workload, but the right choice depends on the material and the viewing experience you need. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream into formats for viewers, so the encoder’s outgoing profile is not the only playback format viewers may receive.

Set up and test the local streaming path
A prerecorded file must be fed continuously into software that sends it to YouTube as a live encoder input. YouTube’s general workflow is to create the stream in Live Control Room, copy its stream URL and key into the encoder, start sending, and check stream health. The official Pi and YouTube guidance does not provide a verified Pi 5 procedure for looping a file indefinitely, so confirm that your selected operating system, encoder, codecs, and loop method work together before scheduling a live session.
- Check the media first. Identify the file’s video codec, resolution, frame rate, container, and audio codec and sample rate. Confirm that your intended encoder can use those streams as-is or determine what must be converted. Do not assume that every file can be passed through.
- Create a YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live, then use Live Control Room to create or select the stream. Copy the server URL and stream key shown there. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access may be able to send video to your channel.
- Configure your encoder. Enter the YouTube server URL and stream key, select RTMPS if available, and configure a profile the Pi can sustain. For H.264, use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Match the audio settings to YouTube’s guidance where your workflow requires audio encoding.
- Feed the file as a live input. Use software that can repeatedly supply the prerecorded media to the encoder. Verify that the end-to-start transition behaves as intended and that audio remains in sync. The exact loop command and settings depend on the chosen software and the media; no Pi 5 loop command is established by the official guidance cited here.
- Run a representative test. YouTube recommends testing with representative movement and audio. Check the incoming stream in Live Control Room, then let the exact setup run long enough to reveal problems with heat, power, storage, network stability, or the encoder process. A short successful test is not proof of uninterrupted operation.
- Plan recovery and supervision. Decide how you will notice a lost connection, stopped encoder, full storage, or power interruption, and how you will restart the feed. A local setup makes you responsible for keeping the Pi and network operating and for responding to failures.
Keep a nonstop stream separate from a replay archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Long-running DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. If a complete replay matters, do not rely on one uninterrupted session to create it; record a local archive as a backup and plan separate, shorter sessions if appropriate.

Clear rights and understand monetization review
You must have the rights needed to livestream everything in the feed, including music and material featuring other participants, and the stream must follow YouTube’s rules and Community Guidelines. Prerecording does not remove those obligations.
Permission to use material does not by itself ensure monetization eligibility. YouTube applies its monetization policies to live streams: repetitive or mass-produced material may be considered “inauthentic content,” while reused-content review considers whether material repurposed from YouTube or elsewhere has significant original commentary, modification, or educational or entertainment value. Eligibility depends on the content and channel review; it is not accurate to say every looping stream is prohibited.

Local Raspberry Pi versus a cloud streaming service
A Pi gives you a local encoder to configure and maintain. Its processor workload depends on whether video can be passed through or must be re-encoded, along with any audio conversion or effects. A cloud service moves the always-on streaming process off your home hardware and connection. YouTube’s verified encoder list names Gyre as a cloud option for 24/7 prerecorded streaming; its current prices and terms are not established here.
StreamNeo is #1 to try for a managed YouTube-only alternative: it keeps an uploaded video or playlist live from the cloud, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with the first day free.
Or let it run in the cloud
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the media from the cloud.
Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price, and StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or its plans. Start the free day.

Quick Recap
Troubleshoot the common failure points
- YouTube does not receive a signal: Check that the stream URL and current stream key are entered correctly, the stream is active in Live Control Room, and the Pi has internet access. If you replace the key, update the encoder too.
- Stream health is poor or viewers see buffering: Check whether the Pi can sustain the selected encoding workload and whether the connection has enough stable upload capacity above the video and audio bitrate. Try a lower resolution or frame rate, then watch the health indicator during another representative test.
- The encoder stops or the feed freezes: Check power stability, heat, available storage, network interruptions, and whether the encoder process is still running. A continuous feed needs a recovery plan; a successful start does not prevent later interruption.
- The loop has a gap, abrupt transition, or audio issue: Test the file’s end-to-start behavior and audio synchronization before going live. Codec or container compatibility and any required conversion depend on the media and software selected.
- The live feed works but no full replay appears: Check the session duration. YouTube may not capture streams longer than 12 hours, so retain a local recording when the archive matters.
