Putting a webpage URL directly into an attachment field does not convert it. The documented route is PDF.co’s URL-capable converter; you can also call a separate PDF-rendering API with Webhooks by Zapier.
Build the basic URL-to-PDF Zap
- Choose a trigger. Start with the event that provides the webpage URL, such as a submitted form or a new record. Test the trigger and confirm the URL appears as a field in the sample data.
- Add a PDF conversion action. In Zapier, add PDF.co’s HTML to PDF Converter or Anything to PDF Converter. Map the trigger’s URL into the converter’s URL input. The HTML-to-PDF action offers options including layout and orientation; the Anything-to-PDF action also accepts other input types, including documents and images. See PDF.co on Zapier and its setup documentation.
- Test the converter. Run a test with a URL the conversion service can access. Confirm the action returns a PDF file output, not merely the original URL or a filename.
- Add the destination action. Choose the email or other app that should receive the PDF. Map the converter’s file output to the destination’s real attachment/file field. PDF.co also lists a Send Email With Attachment action.
- Test the complete Zap. Inspect the received message or destination record and open the PDF. A successful step test alone does not prove that the last action mapped the file correctly.
PDF.co’s Zapier integration requires a PDF.co account, API key, and sufficient credits. Zapier’s integration documentation states a maximum request size of 4 MB, supports file inputs by publicly accessible URL rather than direct upload, and notes rate limiting and special handling for password-protected documents. Map a real file, not just a link
Zapier’s file guidance distinguishes a file object from an ordinary webpage or preview URL. A receiving attachment field needs the file itself or a publicly accessible URL that downloads the file directly. A page that requires sign-in, shows a preview, or returns an error is not a usable attachment link. Zapier recommends opening the link in a private or incognito browser window to check whether it downloads without authentication. See Zapier’s guide to sending files.

- Look for the field explicitly intended for the file or attachment. Fields for an attachment name, file ID, or descriptive text are not interchangeable with the file field.
- Prefer mapping the converter’s returned file object when the destination supports it. If you use a URL, verify that it is public and points directly to the generated PDF.
- If a previously tested file no longer appears, refresh or retest the trigger and upstream step. A sample file reference may have expired.
Handle Google Drive links carefully
A Drive share or preview link may open a page rather than download the PDF, or it may require access. When a Zap has a Google Drive step, use its file output or Web Content Link where appropriate; for Gmail, Zapier says to map the Drive File field to the attachment field rather than substituting a public URL.

Zapier documents the download pattern https://drive.google.com/uc?export=download&id=FILE_ID for files uploaded to Drive. It does not work for native Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and similar files created inside Drive. See Zapier’s file guidance and its Google Drive link advice.

Troubleshoot missing or invalid attachments
- The email arrives without a file: Check that the final action maps the actual file output into its attachment field, then retest the conversion and destination steps.
- The attachment link returns 403, a login page, preview, or empty file: The URL may not be public or may point to a preview rather than a direct download. Test it in a private browser window and use a supported direct file link.
- A Google Drive attachment fails: Prefer the Drive step’s file output or, where appropriate, Web Content Link. Gmail’s attachment field should receive the Drive File output. The documented
uc?export=downloadpattern is for uploaded files, not native Drive-created documents. - The PDF conversion step errors: Confirm that the converter can reach the URL, the request is within the documented 4 MB maximum, and password protection is handled as required. Check for rate limiting if requests are frequent.
- A webhook does not produce a PDF: Confirm that the endpoint is a URL-to-PDF converter and that the request method and payload match its API. For file objects sent through Webhooks, use POST or PUT rather than Custom Request.
