To save a PowerPoint presentation as a video, use PowerPoint’s desktop export feature: on Windows, choose File > Export > Create a Video; on Mac, choose File > Export and select MP4 or MOV. Set the video quality and decide whether to use recorded timings and narration before exporting. A PowerPoint Show file (.ppsx) opens as a presentation, but it is not a video.

Choose the video quality and decide whether to use recorded timings and narrations. If you did not record timings, set how long each slide should appear; the documented Windows workflow defaults to five seconds per slide when recorded timings are not used.
-
Select Create Video, choose a filename and folder, then select MPEG-4 Video or Windows Media Video as the file type and save.
PowerPoint displays export progress in the status bar. Rendering time varies with the presentation’s length and complexity; Microsoft says it can take up to several hours.

Choose where to save the file and export it.
Use Export for this task; Microsoft’s Mac instructions do not describe saving the video through Save As. Microsoft identifies MP4 as an international standard with broad support, particularly on hardware devices.

Choose video quality and slide timing
Microsoft lists these resolution choices in its support guidance. Higher quality creates a larger video file, and 4K availability depends on the PowerPoint platform and version.
| Setting | Resolution | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Ultra HD (4K) | 3840 × 2160 | For a high-resolution output when the option is available. |
| Full HD (1080p) | 1920 × 1080 | Microsoft’s training guidance recommends this for most uses. |
| HD (720p) | 1280 × 720 | Consider when a smaller file matters more than maximum resolution. |
| Standard (480p) | 852 × 480 | A lower-resolution option when file size or basic playback needs take priority. |
Before exporting a narrated presentation, preview the slides and check that the recorded timings match the intended pace. In the Windows video workflow, choose the option to use recorded timings and narrations if you want PowerPoint to retain them. Microsoft says recordings can save narration, animation, pointer movements, and timings in the presentation.

Which video format should you choose?
On Windows, Microsoft’s training instructions recommend MPEG-4 Video for compatibility with video players; WMV is another available choice. On Mac, the documented options are MP4 and MOV, and Microsoft describes MP4 as broadly supported. Microsoft separately recommends MP4 media encoded with H.264 video and AAC audio for compatibility when using media in PowerPoint. That recommendation does not establish that every export configuration produces a particular codec profile.

When a PowerPoint Show file is enough
If you only need the slides to open full screen as a presentation, save a copy as a PowerPoint Show (.ppsx). It is a playback-ready PowerPoint file, not an MP4 or MOV video, so choose video export when you need a standalone video file.
