To turn a picture upside down, rotate it 180 degrees or use Flip Vertical. Do not choose Flip Horizontal: that mirrors the image left to right. The steps depend on the app, but built-in photo tools are enough for most single-picture edits.
Choose the right operation
- Upside down: rotate 180° or flip vertically, so the top and bottom switch places.
- Mirror image: flip horizontally, so left and right switch places.
- Slightly tilted: use straighten or an angle-rotation control rather than either flip.
In Photoshop, Adobe labels the half-turn “Rotate 180°” and describes it as turning the image upside down. Adobe’s rotate and flip instructions distinguish that command from horizontal and vertical flips.

Turn a picture upside down in Windows Photos
- Open the picture in Photos and choose Edit image (Microsoft lists Ctrl+E as the shortcut).
- Open the crop and rotation controls.
- Rotate by 180°, or use the vertical-flip control. Either makes the picture upside down. Use the free-rotation slider only if you need to correct a tilt.
- Preview the result and keep or reset the edit using the controls shown in your version of Photos.
Microsoft documents both 90-degree and incremental rotation and flip controls in its Windows Photos editing guide. The guide’s explicit “Save as Copy” instructions concern video, so do not assume that still-photo save behavior is identical in every Photos version.

Turn a picture upside down on iPhone
- Open the photo in Photos and tap Edit.
- Tap Crop.
- Tap the rotate control twice. Each tap rotates the photo 90°, producing a 180° turn.
- Tap Done to keep the edit. To abandon it, tap Cancel and discard the changes.
The separate Flip control in Apple’s iPhone instructions mirrors horizontally; use the rotate control for an upside-down result. See Apple’s Photos instructions for iPhone.

Turn a picture upside down in Mac Photos
- Open the photo and enter the crop tools.
- Hold Option and click Flip to flip vertically. A regular click on Flip mirrors horizontally.
- Use Reset to clear crop or straightening changes, or choose Revert to Original if you do not want to keep the edits.

Turn a picture upside down in Photoshop
- Select what you want to change: the whole image, a layer, or a selection.
- Choose Edit > Transform > Rotate 180° for a half-turn, or choose Edit > Transform > Flip Vertical for a vertical inversion.
- Check the result. Avoid Flip Horizontal unless you want a left-right mirror.
Photoshop transformations can apply to an image, layer, or selection, so confirm the intended scope before using the command. Adobe’s image rotation and flip documentation lists these transforms.

Turn a picture upside down in GIMP
- For the whole image, choose Image > Transform > Flip Vertically.
- For a left-right mirror, choose Image > Transform > Flip Horizontally.
- To flip a selection or a particular layer instead of the whole image, use the Flip Tool or the applicable layer-transform controls.
GIMP’s 3.0 manual says the Image menu’s flip commands operate on the whole image; layer and selection operations use different controls. See the GIMP 3.0 flip documentation.

Flip a picture inside Word or PowerPoint
- Select the picture or other object in the document or presentation.
- Open the Format tab, then use the Arrange or Rotate control provided by the app.
- Choose Flip Vertical to turn the object upside down. Choose Flip Horizontal only to mirror it.
This changes the object in the Office document; it is not the same as editing the original photo file. Microsoft notes that text inside a flipped object may not reverse with the object, and some Office apps provide a separate 3-D rotation adjustment for that situation. For a one-photo correction, start with the app already on your device. Use Photoshop or GIMP when you need more control over whether the edit applies to an entire image, a layer, or only a selection.

Preview the picture before leaving the editor. Use the app’s Done or save control when you want to keep the change; use its reset, revert, or discard option when you do not. The exact save workflow varies by app and version, so follow the control shown in the editor rather than assuming every app saves a separate copy.

Google Photos’ help result describes opening a photo, choosing Edit, then Crop & rotate, and saving; it also notes that some web features may require the Android or iOS app. The exact platform-specific gesture for a 180° turn is not established by that help information.
