Image translation usually works as a two-part pipeline: optical character recognition (OCR) first finds and reads writing in the image, then a machine-translation system translates that extracted text. Showing the translation as text and rebuilding the image with translated lettering are separate output capabilities, and not every tool does both.
How an image becomes translated text
The exact implementation varies, but a typical system moves through a few distinct stages. It may prepare or crop an image before analysis; there is no single preprocessing recipe required by every system.

- Receive the image. The service or app takes an image as input. What image formats it accepts depends on the implementation.
- Detect and recognize writing. OCR analyzes visual patterns, locates text, and converts it into machine-readable characters and words. Google Cloud Vision, for example, offers
TEXT_DETECTIONfor extracted text and word boxes, andDOCUMENT_TEXT_DETECTIONfor denser material with page, block, paragraph, word, and break structure. Google explains these OCR modes and their outputs. - Handle the source language. The OCR stage may identify the language automatically, or an application may provide a language hint. Google says an empty hint usually gives the best results because automatic detection is enabled; hints are not needed for Latin-alphabet languages, and an incorrect hint can significantly hinder results. A hint is therefore not a universal accuracy fix. See Google’s guidance on language hints.
- Translate the recognized text. A translation service receives the OCR text and converts it into the requested target language. In Google’s documented workflow, Vision extracts text and Cloud Translation translates it; the example then saves the translations to Cloud Storage. Google’s workflow tutorial describes the connection.
- Present the result. An application can display translated text separately from the source image. To return a translated picture, it needs an additional image-output step that places translated content into the image.
What OCR contributes beyond the words
OCR is not the translation itself: it converts visible writing into text a computer can process. Depending on the service and mode, it may also retain where text appeared and how it was grouped. Word boxes can help associate recognized text with regions of the image, while a dense-document mode may represent a hierarchy of pages, blocks, paragraphs, and words. Google’s OCR documentation describes both kinds of output.
That spatial and structural information can be useful when an application needs to organize the recognized content or align it with the source. It does not mean OCR has translated the words, nor does it by itself guarantee that the translated text will be placed back into the original layout.

Translated text versus a translated image
Returning a translation as text is different from editing or reconstructing the image. An image-output system must render the translated content into the picture. That is an additional capability, not a consequence of OCR and translation alone.
For a specific example, Microsoft’s Azure Translator Document Translation API version 2026-03-01 GA documents standalone JPEG, PNG, BMP, and WebP image translation with translated content rendered back into the image. This is a feature of that versioned service; it should not be taken as a promise that every translator modifies images. Microsoft’s overview lists the feature and supported image formats.

Why image-translation tools differ
Implementations can make different choices at each stage, so a useful comparison is about capabilities rather than assuming a single standard workflow or declaring a winner without comparative measurements.

- Image inputs: Check which image types and formats the service supports.
- OCR detail: Find out whether it returns only extracted text, text with word boxes, or a richer document hierarchy.
- Language handling: Check how source language is identified, whether hints are available, and which languages the system supports.
- Output: Confirm whether results are returned as translated text, rendered into an image, or offered in both forms.
- Data handling and processing location: Review the service’s options for handling data and regional processing when those factors matter to your workflow.
Vendor documentation describes the features of the named services, not the architecture or comparative quality of every commercial or on-device translator. The official examples establish how particular workflows can be built; they do not establish a general accuracy, speed, or quality figure for image translation.
