It can act as a remote for a separate network streamer, or it can play music itself and send audio to your stereo. The first option relies on a compatible player and home network; the second depends on the phone’s audio output and your system’s inputs. Neither setup automatically improves sound quality.
What the old phone does in a hi-fi setup
“Control system” usually means keeping the phone near the stereo to browse music, choose playback, and adjust settings while another device handles the audio stream. The phone is then a remote, not the audio source. Alternatively, the phone itself can play music and feed audio to the hi-fi.

Those roles are not interchangeable: a controller needs compatible control software and a player it can find, while a playback phone needs a usable audio connection to the system.

This is often the simpler way to reuse an old phone. A compatible network streamer or music server plays the audio; the phone provides the interface. WiiM says its Pro can be controlled through the WiiM Home app or supported music apps, and JPLAY describes its app as a remote for compatible streamers, music servers, and network DACs. Check compatibility and discovery
- Confirm the phone can still install or run the control app and that the app supports your playback device.
- For WiiM Pro discovery, WiiM’s setup guidance says the phone and Pro should be on the same network. If the player does not appear, check that both are connected to the intended home network and that the app has the required permissions.
- Some software-based arrangements need a separate core or server as well as the controller app; JPLAY’s documentation describes such system requirements for some configurations.
A phone dedicated to this job can stay by the stereo instead of being carried around. Its usefulness still depends on the app, player, and network continuing to work together.
Option 2: Make the phone the audio source
If the phone plays the music directly, its audio must reach an input on the amplifier, receiver, or powered speakers. Depending on the phone and stereo, that may be a direct wired connection or a suitable adapter and external USB DAC. Community discussions describe phone-to-DAC and phone-to-receiver setups, but they do not establish a universal adapter combination or a sound-quality advantage. Match the connection to your equipment
- Identify the phone’s available audio output and whether its operating system supports the adapter or DAC you plan to use.
- Check the stereo for a compatible input. Do not assume a USB port on the stereo accepts audio from a phone; verify the device documentation.
- If you need an adapter or DAC, choose it only after confirming the phone’s output and the stereo’s input. A generic USB DAC is not guaranteed to work with every phone.
This route makes the old phone the player, so the music app and playback capability must remain usable on that device. The exact requirements cannot be determined without the phone model and the system’s inputs.
How to choose between the two approaches

For the least added cost, first see whether the phone can control a player you already own. If you want the phone to be the source, check the connection before buying anything. If neither arrangement fits, a dedicated streamer is a separate option.

When a dedicated streamer makes sense
A network streamer separates playback from the phone. WiiM describes its Pro as a way to add network streaming to an existing amplifier or powered speakers, with analog and digital outputs and support for ecosystems including AirPlay 2, Google Cast, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, DLNA, and Roon Ready. Features and service support can vary or change, so check the current WiiM Pro specifications for the exact model before choosing it.
WiiM also describes the Mini as a smaller streamer with an integrated analog DAC output and app control, while the Ultra adds inputs including HDMI ARC and phono. What to expect from repurposing the phone
The practical gain is having a ready-to-hand interface—or, if the connections work, a spare music source—without using your everyday cell for every interaction. Whether that makes the phone more useful is personal. No comparative listening test establishes that either phone-based approach sounds better than another setup, so choose based on compatibility, convenience, and any added hardware cost rather than assuming an audio upgrade.
