For a more realistic racing game, match driving assists to the car the game is simulating, then reduce artificial intervention only as far as you can still drive consistently. There is no universal “turn everything off” preset: a modern race car may use ABS or traction control, while a road car or older race car may not. Your game, its version, your input device, and your goal all matter.
What driving assists change
Assists do different jobs, so judge them individually rather than treating them as one realism switch. The same label can also behave differently across games, difficulty levels, or updates.

- Traction control (TCS/TC): limits driven-wheel spin, often by reducing or managing accelerator input. In the older Gran Turismo 6 manual, TCS is described as controlling accelerator input to limit wheel spin.
- Anti-lock braking (ABS): helps prevent the wheels from locking under braking. Whether it fits a realistic setup depends on the modeled car and how the game represents its braking system.
- Stability management and countersteering help: intervene when the car begins to spin or slide. They can make a car easier to recover, but may also take control away from the player. Gran Turismo 6 describes ASM as helping prevent spin-outs; GT7’s assistance settings include countersteering assistance.
- Steering correction and braking or cornering assists: steer, brake, or otherwise intervene on the player’s behalf. These are often the first aids to reduce when the aim is to practice making those decisions yourself.
- Skid recovery: can increase grip when wheels slip. It is distinct from traction control, even if both make slides less likely or easier to manage.
- Racing line: gives visual guidance about where to drive, brake, or turn. Forza describes its AI line through braking points and corner entry and exit speeds, making it useful as a learning aid—not proof that every other setting is realistic.
These descriptions explain the concepts, not a promise that every game implements them identically. For current behavior, consult the specific title’s manual and update notes.

Use them when they suit the car being simulated and help you drive it consistently. A modern race car may use both systems; an older race car or a road car may have different equipment. If the game offers factory, authentic, or car-specific assists, start there, but do not assume every title models real-world equipment accurately.

For a beginner in F1 25, EA’s F1 25 driving-assists guide recommends Traction Control on Medium and Anti-Lock Brakes on. That is a game-specific starting point, not a recommendation for every racing game or car. EA’s page is for F1 25’s 2026 Season Edition; some of its 2026 content requires that edition or the Season Pack and does not necessarily apply to the F1 25 base game.
Think of each setting along four dimensions: how much it overrides your inputs, whether it matches the simulated car’s real aids, whether you can control the car with your device, and whether it helps you learn a transferable skill. Realism and difficulty overlap, but they are not the same. An accessibility option can make a game playable without dictating how authentic the rest of your setup must be.

How to make a racing game feel more realistic
Change settings gradually and compare them under repeatable conditions. This helps you tell whether a change improves the experience or simply makes the car harder to drive.

- Establish a clean-lap baseline. Keep enough stability support to complete laps without frequent spins. For a novice in F1 25, EA’s example is TC Medium and ABS On; use the game-specific guidance for other titles.
- Reduce direct intervention first. If you want more control, remove braking and cornering steering intervention before changing everything else. In F1 25, EA recommends moving from braking and cornering assists toward fewer interventions.
- Scale back visual help in stages. Try the racing line on corners only before turning it off. This preserves braking and turn-in guidance at difficult points while you learn the circuit.
- Lower traction control one step at a time. In F1 25, EA’s sequence is to move TC from Full to Medium, then Off. Keep ABS if it better suits the simulated car or helps you brake consistently.
- Compare on repeat laps. Hold the car, track, tire, weather, and other conditions constant, and drive several laps after each change. This is a practical comparison method, not a tested universal setup.
- Change input calibration separately. Adjust controller sensitivity or deadzone, or wheel force feedback, independently of driving assists. EA documents customizable steering, throttle, and brake calibration, vibration, and force feedback in its F1 25 accessibility information for US English on PC and consoles.
Why settings can change between games and updates
An assist’s name does not guarantee a fixed intervention level. Gran Turismo 7’s Update 1.31 notice, dated March 30, 2023, documents changes to physics and driving assistance: the Intermediate preset’s countersteering assistance changed from Strong to Weak and TCS from 5 to 3; Expert countersteering changed from Strong to Off. The update also adjusted TCS, ABS, Active Stability Management, and countersteering intervention.

That update is a concrete example of version-specific behavior, not a guide to settings in other games. Before relying on an old setup recommendation, check the current manual or patch notes for your title. The car and its setup matter, too: Forza’s developer explanation says its tire model accounts for tire contact and grip over uneven surfaces, and that tire compounds differ in grip and wear. A change in tires or car setup can therefore affect how a given assist feels.
Controller or wheel: calibrate the input you have
A wheel is optional. Controller players can tune assists and input response too; choose the device you can use reliably, then check that any wheel you consider is compatible with your platform and game. Hardware alone does not make a setup realistic.

Separate input calibration from driving aids so you know which change caused a difference. EA’s F1 25 accessibility page documents adjustments for steering, throttle, and brakes as well as vibration and force feedback. The Gran Turismo 6 manual explains that wheel force feedback communicates track-contact information. These are useful examples of how games may present calibration and feedback options, not evidence that every title offers the same controls.

A practical starting point
| Player situation | Starting approach | What to adjust next |
|---|---|---|
| New to a title or struggling to finish laps | Keep enough stability support to complete clean laps; for a novice in F1 25, EA’s example is TC Medium and ABS On. | Remove braking or steering intervention gradually, then reassess before reducing traction control. |
| Comfortable driving, aiming for more input control | Reduce assists that steer or brake for you; use corners-only racing-line guidance as a transition if helpful. | Lower TC in steps and compare repeat laps under the same conditions. |
| Trying to match a particular car | Use factory, authentic, or car-specific options if the game offers them, and check what equipment the modeled car uses. | Confirm the title’s current manual or update notes; do not infer real-world accuracy from an assist’s name alone. |
Event eligibility, rewards, and online rules can depend on the specific game and mode. Check that title’s current documentation before changing assists for a particular event; there is no universal rule established across racing games.
