To tune DLSS 5, start with the options the game actually exposes: enable or disable DLSS Neural Rendering, compare the same scene, and adjust other DLSS features separately. NVIDIA describes DLSS 5 intensity, model, and masking controls as developer-facing—not universal player sliders. For player-controlled performance and image quality, Super Resolution’s input-resolution mode is the more direct lever.
How do I turn DLSS 5 on or off?
In a supported game, look for DLSS Neural Rendering in the graphics or display settings. NVIDIA says the feature is optional, so switch it on or off there if the game provides the setting. Availability is game-specific; a missing option may mean the game does not offer it on your current hardware or through your current play method.

Use a repeatable comparison rather than changing several graphics options at once. Choose a scene with the same camera position, motion, lighting, and fine detail, then compare with DLSS Neural Rendering on and off. Keep resolution and other graphics settings fixed for each comparison.

- Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
- 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
- Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
- Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs
- Record a baseline. Note your usual resolution, graphics settings, frame rate or frame pacing, and how responsive the game feels.
- Toggle DLSS Neural Rendering. Compare the same scene in motion, not just a still image.
- Check the areas most likely to reveal differences. Look at fine textures, faces and materials, lighting, temporal stability, and visible artifacts.
- Change one setting at a time. Test Super Resolution, Frame Generation, or Ray Reconstruction independently when diagnosing a result.
- Keep the combination that looks acceptable in motion at your desired performance level. Results may vary by game and scene.
The available sources do not provide independent, game-specific DLSS 5 image-quality or frame-rate benchmarks. Treat performance and visual results as something to verify in your own game rather than assume from a feature label.
What settings can players actually adjust?
NVIDIA’s DLSS 5 FAQ describes model selection and intensity and masking controls as tools for developers. They help explain why implementations can differ between games, but they should not be mistaken for settings every player can tune.
- Structure Intensity affects high-frequency details, including ambient occlusion, contact shadows, and subsurface scattering.
- Tone Intensity affects lower-frequency lighting and color response.
- Masking can identify objects automatically or use developer-provided per-pixel control.
If a game does not expose these controls, there is no universal player-side slider to adjust them. Use the game’s DLSS Neural Rendering toggle and its other graphics options instead.

What settings improve DLSS image quality?
First decide which DLSS feature is responsible for the result you want to change. DLSS is a family of distinct tools, and adjusting one does not serve the same purpose as adjusting another.
| Feature | What it does | Useful player-side test |
|---|---|---|
| DLSS Neural Rendering | Applies the DLSS 5 effect; NVIDIA says it can run alongside Super Resolution, Frame Generation, and Ray Reconstruction. | Compare its in-game toggle on and off in the same scene. |
| Super Resolution | Reconstructs a higher-resolution output from lower-resolution input. | Compare the available quality modes while holding other settings fixed. |
| Frame Generation | Creates additional frames to improve displayed smoothness. | Check smoothness and responsiveness separately; it is not a lighting or material enhancement control. |
| Ray Reconstruction | Improves ray-traced image reconstruction by replacing traditional hand-tuned denoisers. | Test independently in a ray-traced or path-traced scene. |
| DLAA | Uses the Super Resolution approach at native resolution for anti-aliasing. | Consider it when anti-aliasing is the goal rather than lower-resolution rendering. |
NVIDIA’s developer overview describes these as complementary but distinct technologies. NVIDIA DLSS developer overview
Use Super Resolution mode as a resolution lever
Super Resolution is the clearest player-side DLSS lever for balancing input detail and performance. NVIDIA’s App override guidance gives examples of input resolution at 67% for Quality, 50% for Performance, and 33% for Ultra Performance. These percentages describe input resolution relative to output—not DLSS 5 intensity or guaranteed frame-rate gains. A lower input resolution can improve performance but may change detail and stability. Exact options depend on the game and override path.

Frame Generation creates additional frames; it is not the same setting as DLSS Neural Rendering. If you use it, assess how smooth motion looks and how responsive controls feel as separate outcomes. NVIDIA says Frame Generation works with Reflex. NVIDIA DLSS developer overview
Test Ray Reconstruction on its own
For a ray-traced or path-traced game, compare Ray Reconstruction independently so you can tell whether it changes the result. Its performance effect depends on scene workload: NVIDIA says it may improve performance when replacing several costly denoisers, while less intensive ray-traced games can incur a slight cost.

The available sources do not establish a universal frame-rate cost or gain for DLSS 5, and do not provide an independent game-specific benchmark. Measure the effect in your own game with a repeatable scene. Keep the resolution and other graphics settings unchanged, compare the same motion with DLSS Neural Rendering on and off, and note frame rate or frame pacing along with image quality.
Do not attribute a change to DLSS Neural Rendering if you also changed Super Resolution mode, Frame Generation, or Ray Reconstruction. Test each relevant option separately; in particular, Ray Reconstruction’s performance effect can vary with ray-tracing workload.
