Choose the laptop that runs your essential apps and works with your peripherals; then compare specific models at the same budget. A MacBook makes sense if macOS and a conventional laptop fit your workflow. A Windows laptop is the better shortlist choice if you need Windows-only software or hardware, or want a touchscreen convertible with pen input. Neither operating system is a universal winner.
Start with the software and devices you depend on
Before comparing screens, battery claims or prices, list the applications you need for work, school or play, plus any accessories that require special drivers. Check compatibility with the software maker and accessory vendor for the exact laptop you are considering. A platform label alone does not guarantee that every program or peripheral will work.

This matters especially for some Windows laptops built on Arm processors. In its comparison of the MacBook Air 13 (M5, 2026) and Surface Pro 13 12th Edition (2026), RTINGS notes potential app and peripheral compatibility issues with the Surface’s Windows-on-Arm platform. That is a qualification about this Arm-based device, not all Windows laptops; Windows models using other processor architectures may behave differently.

A MacBook Air is a traditional clamshell laptop. In the same RTINGS comparison, it is described as fanless and stable to use on a lap. The Surface Pro is a detachable touchscreen device with pen support: its screen can be used as a tablet, but its form factor is different from a conventional laptop. Many Windows laptops are clamshells too, and some are convertibles; the Surface comparison should not be treated as a comparison with every PC.

Compare real prices and configurations
Windows laptops span many designs and price tiers, so “MacBook versus Windows” is not a meaningful price comparison by itself. Compare named machines with similar memory, storage, display, warranty and support coverage, and check the price in your market on the day you buy.
As a dated US-market example, Tom’s Guide’s 2026 roundup lists the MacBook Air M5 at a starting price of $1,299. That figure is a price snapshot for the MacBook Air, not a like-for-like comparison with a Windows model or evidence that either platform is generally cheaper. The roundup names the Air its top all-round choice, while also recognizing buyers whose needs may point to Windows, a gaming laptop or an upgradeability-focused model; that ranking is the publication’s editorial judgment, not a universal result.

Judge portability and battery life against your own workload
Think about the workday you need to cover and the tasks you actually do—such as video calls, browsing, writing or demanding creative work. Battery life varies with use and configuration, so a manufacturer’s maximum is not a promise of your personal runtime. Compare independent results only when their test workloads and settings are similar.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesApple’s UK technical page for the MacBook Air M5 says battery life varies by use and configuration. Apple’s January 2026 battery test used pre-production 13-inch and 15-inch systems, each configured with 16GB unified memory and a 512GB SSD. Those test conditions describe Apple’s result; they do not establish a platform-wide battery advantage or predict every buyer’s experience. See Apple’s MacBook Air technical specifications for the model details and testing notes.

Account for gaming and your existing workflow
If gaming is important, compare the specific games and laptop configurations you expect to use rather than assuming one operating system always wins. A gaming-focused Windows laptop is a different kind of choice from the Surface convertible in the head-to-head comparison. Check game availability, hardware requirements and performance information for the exact model.
Also consider whether your work depends on macOS or Windows applications, or whether you rely on other devices in one ecosystem. These are personal fit questions, not a measured advantage established for either platform here. If an application is essential, confirm that it supports the operating system and hardware architecture of the laptop you plan to buy.

Could a Mac run the Windows software you need?
Virtualization may be an option for some Windows requirements, but it does not guarantee that a particular application or accessory will work. Microsoft’s support guidance covers Windows 11 on Macs with M1, M2 and M3 chips; confirm current guidance for newer chips and for the specific software you need before relying on this route. Microsoft explains options for using Windows 11 on supported Macs.
Licensing is a separate requirement: Microsoft Support says, “A unique license is required for each instance of Windows 11 Pro, either on hardware or in a virtual machine.” See Microsoft’s Windows-on-Mac licensing guidance for details.

A practical way to make the decision
- Write down must-haves. Include essential apps, peripherals, screen or pen needs, and any gaming requirements.
- Verify compatibility. Check each important app and accessory against the exact operating system and processor architecture of the candidate laptop.
- Choose the form factor. Decide whether a standard clamshell is right, or whether touch, pen input or detachable tablet use justifies a convertible.
- Compare complete configurations. Match memory, storage, display, warranty and support, then check current prices in your region.
- Check endurance evidence carefully. Use tests that resemble your workload and treat vendor battery figures as results under stated conditions, not guarantees.
- Buy for the workflow, not the label. Compare the final two or three specific models; a platform-wide verdict cannot account for their different designs and components.
