Work through the checks in order: confirm wireless compatibility and setup conditions, restart the phone and infotainment system, check phone- or receiver-specific settings, then compare with wired Android Auto if your vehicle supports it. A wired comparison can help narrow the fault, but it does not by itself prove the cause.
1. Confirm wireless Android Auto compatibility and setup
Wireless Android Auto requires a compatible phone and car or receiver. If you are unsure whether your specific models support it, check with the vehicle manufacturer. Google’s Android Auto setup instructions recommend completing setup with the car parked and its infotainment system turned on.

During setup, keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services enabled on the phone. Pair over Bluetooth and follow the prompts on both the phone and infotainment screen; vehicle pairing flows can differ, so consult the car’s manual if its prompts do not match the expected steps. Android Auto is integrated into the phone, so installing a separate Android Auto app is not a universal first troubleshooting step.

2. Restart the phone and infotainment system
Restart the phone and the car’s infotainment system, then try connecting again. Also check the vehicle settings to make sure Android Auto is enabled. The available setting names and restart procedure vary by vehicle and phone, so use the relevant owner’s manual or manufacturer support if you cannot find them. These are among the general checks in Google’s Android Auto troubleshooting guidance.

If you use an aftermarket receiver
Check the receiver manufacturer’s support site for a firmware update and model-specific instructions. Do not assume that vehicle infotainment update steps apply to an aftermarket unit.
3. Apply phone-specific checks
Phone menus differ by maker, model, and software version. For Galaxy phones, Samsung’s Android Auto troubleshooting steps include restarting the phone, clearing Android Auto’s cache, checking for phone software updates, and confirming that Calls and Audio are enabled for the paired car in Bluetooth settings. Samsung notes that screens and settings can vary by device, carrier, and software version; these directions are Galaxy-specific rather than a universal Android menu path.

4. Compare wireless with wired Android Auto
If your car supports wired Android Auto, test it under similar conditions and note whether it also disconnects. This comparison is a diagnostic clue, not a guaranteed diagnosis:
- Wired works, wireless drops: Focus next on wireless pairing, compatibility, phone settings, and the receiver’s wireless firmware.
- Both wired and wireless fail: Broaden the checks to phone software, infotainment settings, compatibility, and receiver or vehicle support.
Google’s cable advice applies to wired Android Auto only: it recommends a high-quality USB cable under one metre and says replacing the cable may help when a previously working wired connection stops working. A suitable cable can serve as a wired fallback or help isolate a wired fault; it will not repair a wireless-only dropout. Check that the cable matches your phone’s connector and that the vehicle port supports data, not just charging. See Google’s troubleshooting instructions.

5. Gather details before contacting support
If the connection still drops, provide enough detail for the relevant support team to distinguish a phone, vehicle, or receiver issue. A Google Android Auto Community Specialist requested these details in response to a disconnection report:
- Phone model, Android OS version, and build number
- Android Auto version and Google Play services version
- Car or head-unit make and model
- Whether the connection is wireless or wired, and your country
- Any error message and when the disconnections began
If you know whether the same phone works in another compatible vehicle, or another compatible phone works in yours, include that comparison too. It is useful context, though not a prescribed requirement. The community thread about wireless disconnects after an update contains user reports, not proof that an update causes other people’s problems. Avoid downgrading software or changing advanced settings based only on those reports.
