Fix Armbian Wi-Fi by checking the problem in order: first confirm Linux detects a wireless interface, then check whether the radio is blocked, whether the access point can be reached and authenticated, and whether the board receives an IP address and route. The right driver or firmware depends on your board, kernel, and Wi-Fi chipset, so there is no universal Armbian Wi-Fi fix.
Before troubleshooting, identify the board and Wi-Fi hardware
Armbian provides a Debian- or Ubuntu-based system with board-specific kernels, bootloaders, device trees, and tuning. Support and maintenance vary by board, and Wi-Fi compatibility also depends on the radio chipset and running kernel. Start by recording:

- Whether Wi-Fi is onboard or provided by a USB adapter; identify the chipset if possible.
- The Armbian release and the kernel version or branch currently running.
Use the documentation for your specific board for hardware-dependent details. Armbian’s project and support overview explains its board-focused support model, while its troubleshooting guidance directs users to board-specific information.

Run these commands in a terminal:
iw dev
ip addr
iw dev lists wireless interfaces known to the kernel. Armbian documents this command to list their names:

Do not assume the interface will be called wlan0; names vary. Armbian’s networking documentation says a blank result from its interface check means the Wi-Fi device or dongle is not supported by the kernel. In that case, changing the network name or password will not solve the missing-interface problem.
If no wireless interface appears
- Check whether the board’s Wi-Fi chipset is supported by the kernel used by this Armbian image.
- Verify that the necessary driver is available and bound to the device.
- Check whether the chipset requires firmware and whether that firmware is present in the installed image.
- For a USB adapter, check its chipset against the target kernel rather than relying on the product label alone.
Armbian’s armbian-config documentation describes kernel and firmware management. Its image build options documentation explains that firmware packages include binary blobs, including Wi-Fi firmware needed by many boards. Whether a particular driver or firmware is available depends on the hardware and image; do not install a chipset-specific package or change kernel branches without first identifying both.

rfkill list
Look for a soft block or hard block in the output. A soft block is a software-controlled radio disable; a hard block indicates a hardware-level restriction. NetworkManager can manage the global Wi-Fi rfkill state and update the kernel’s soft-block state, but unblocking Wi-Fi cannot make a missing driver or firmware appear. For details on rfkill behavior, see the NetworkManager RFKill documentation.
Configure Wi-Fi when the interface exists
Armbian’s supported configuration route is its setup utility:
- Run
sudo armbian-config. - Open the network settings and select the wireless interface that actually appeared on your system.
- Choose the intended access point and enter its password.
- Start with DHCP unless your network requires a static address.
Armbian documents both wireless setup and manual networking options in its networking guide. Avoid copying instructions for a different Armbian release or networking stack: systems do not all use NetworkManager or the same configuration-file locations.

If your network requires a static address
Confirm the address and prefix, gateway, route, and DNS settings supplied by your network administrator or router configuration. A static address can allow local network access while an incorrect gateway, route, or DNS setting prevents access beyond the local network. The exact configuration method depends on the networking stack and Armbian release.
Separate access-point, authentication, and IP problems
A visible wireless interface does not prove that the board has joined Wi-Fi or can reach the internet. Check the stages separately:
- Access point not visible: Check that the radio is unblocked, the expected network is available, and the board’s chipset and driver support the relevant wireless conditions. The supplied Armbian guidance does not establish a universal scan fix.
- Network visible but connection fails: Recheck the selected network and password, then consider whether the driver or firmware supports the chipset correctly.
- Connected but no usable network access: Check whether the board received a valid IP address and has the expected route and DNS configuration. A completed setup-menu operation alone does not guarantee internet access.
Use ip addr to inspect addresses on available interfaces. Diagnose association and IP configuration only after establishing that the kernel exposes the wireless interface.

Choosing between onboard Wi-Fi and a USB adapter
A USB wireless adapter is a possible fallback when onboard Wi-Fi is absent or unsupported, but compatibility is specific to the adapter chipset and the board’s running kernel. Compare the options on evidence available for your exact hardware:
| Check | Onboard wireless | USB Wi-Fi adapter |
|---|---|---|
| Kernel support | Check the onboard chipset against the running kernel and board documentation. | Check the adapter chipset against the running kernel; the product name alone is not enough. |
| Interface detection | Confirm an interface appears with iw dev. |
Confirm an interface appears after connecting the adapter with iw dev. |
| Firmware | Verify whether the chipset needs firmware and whether it is available for the installed image. | Verify firmware needs and availability for the adapter’s chipset and installed image. |
| Physical considerations | Use the board’s hardware documentation for onboard radio details. | Check physical fit and antenna needs for the board and adapter. |
The cited Armbian documentation does not establish a best adapter model or compare speed and reliability, so choose only after verifying kernel compatibility for the specific adapter and board.
Keep a recovery path while troubleshooting
If the board has Ethernet, use a wired connection while investigating Wi-Fi; not every single-board computer has Ethernet. A local console is another option where available. Keeping a way to reach the system can make it easier to inspect board-specific documentation and correct network settings without losing access.
