If a post, comment, or other user-submitted page is missing from Google Search, trace the problem through five separate stages: discovery, crawling, rendering, indexing, and appearing in results. Start with the exact URL in Google Search Console’s URL Inspection tool. A successful crawl does not prove that Google indexed a page, and technical eligibility does not guarantee inclusion.
Why is my user-generated content not showing up in Google Search?
First identify which stage is failing. Google must know a URL exists, be able to fetch it, render its content when needed, consider it eligible for indexing, and then choose to show it for a search. A page can pass one stage and fail a later one: for example, Google may crawl a page but exclude it from the index, or index it without showing it for the query you tried.

Google’s stated technical baseline is that Googlebot is not blocked, the page returns HTTP 200, and it contains indexable content. Meeting those requirements makes a page eligible, not guaranteed to be indexed. Google Search Technical Requirements says, “Just because a page meets these requirements doesn’t mean that it will be indexed.”
How do I find out what Google saw?
In Google Search Console, open URL Inspection and inspect one affected URL. Compare the indexed or crawled information with the live test: the former reflects Google’s processed state, while the live test checks the current page. Look at crawl status, indexing permission, the reported response and page state, and—if the page relies on JavaScript—whether the rendered content includes the user submission. The tool helps test a URL’s access and state, but its results are not an indexing guarantee. Google’s Search Console guidance describes URL Inspection and related reports.

Then compare representative pages to spot a pattern: a recent post, an older post, a post using a different template or rendering path, and a known-good page if available. This is a practical way to isolate differences, not a sample set prescribed by Google. For site-wide patterns, use Search Console’s Page Indexing and Crawl Stats reports; they answer different questions from inspection of an individual URL.

Google has not discovered the URL
If Google has not crawled a new page, check whether it is linked from other crawlable pages and included in a current XML sitemap. Keep the sitemap’s entries to canonical URLs for pages intended for indexing. A sitemap can help point Google to new URLs, but it does not compel Google to crawl or index them. Review robots rules and access controls as well. Google’s crawling-error troubleshooting guidance recommends checking discovery, sitemaps, robots rules, and whether the site can serve requests.

Confirm that the URL is publicly accessible to Googlebot and returns HTTP 200 rather than a client or server error. Login walls, DNS or network problems, server errors, throttling, and blocked crawling can prevent reliable retrieval. Use URL Inspection and the Page Indexing and Crawl Stats reports; if you need URL-level crawl history, check verified Googlebot server logs.

Do not default to “crawl budget” to explain a few missing pages or a small site. Google describes crawl-budget management as relevant to very large sites and also points to more direct causes, including undiscovered URLs, blocked content, and site availability.
A noindex directive prevents indexing
Check the page’s HTML <head> for meta name="robots" or meta name="googlebot" directives, and check HTTP response headers for X-Robots-Tag: noindex. A CMS, template, staging setting, or response header may apply the directive without it being obvious in the page editor. If the page should be eligible for Search, remove the unintended noindex directive and make sure Googlebot can crawl the page afterward.

Google supports noindex in a robots meta tag or an HTTP response header, not in robots.txt. A robots.txt block can prevent Google from seeing a noindex directive, because the crawler must be able to fetch the page to read it. A disallowed URL can still be discovered and indexed as a URL from links, even when Google cannot crawl its contents. If you need to keep a page out of Search, use access control, remove it, or—when appropriate—allow crawling so Google can read a noindex directive. Google selected a different canonical URL
For duplicate or near-duplicate UGC pages, inspect canonical signals and whether Google selected another URL as canonical. URL variants can complicate which page appears in Search. Canonicalization helps Google understand preferred URLs; adding a canonical tag by itself does not force a page into the index. See Google’s canonicalization guidance.
JavaScript does not render the submitted content for Google
A page that looks correct in a human’s browser may not expose the same content to Google. If a submission is added after page load, use URL Inspection or Google’s Rich Results Test to inspect the rendered DOM. Confirm that the actual user text is present, then review loaded resources, blocked scripts or APIs, and JavaScript console errors or exceptions. Google outlines these checks in its guide to fixing Search-related JavaScript problems.
If Google’s rendered page is blank, nearly blank, or shows an error, investigate failed resources, blocked scripts, server errors, excessive resources, and slow or very large assets. An error-like rendered page can contribute to a soft 404 classification, according to Google’s crawling-error troubleshooting guidance.
The content is low-value or violates spam policies
Technical access alone is not enough. Review the page and the submission channel for spammy accounts, forum posts, comments, uploaded files, or other user-added spam. Google’s spam policies for Google Web Search explicitly include spam added through user-content channels. Policy violations may result in lower ranking or no appearance in Search; low-value content can also fail to earn a place in results.

Apply it deliberately and ensure Googlebot can crawl the page to see the directive. Blocking the URL in robots.txt is not a substitute for noindex.

- Correct the cause. Fix access or server errors, remove an unintended noindex directive, repair rendering, or address the content and policy issue identified by the checks above.
- Test the live URL. In Search Console’s URL Inspection tool, run the live test to confirm Google can access the current page and, where relevant, see the submitted content.
- Request recrawling if available. Use the request option in URL Inspection after the fix. Google may take time to recrawl and process the page; a request is not a promise of indexing or a fixed indexing deadline.
- Monitor the result. Recheck the URL in Search Console and watch Page Indexing and Crawl Stats for broader patterns.
Google’s crawling guidance emphasizes that crawling and indexing are different: “Remember the difference between crawling and indexing.”
