Confirm your destination and phone are supported, then use the matching steps below. T-Mobile’s instructions are general; available roaming partners and exact phone settings vary by destination, device, plan, and operating system.
Start with these checks abroad
- Check destination and device eligibility. Confirm that your country is included for roaming on your plan and that your phone supports service there. T-Mobile’s destination information is subject to change; check its current international roaming coverage information and plan terms before troubleshooting the handset.
- Turn on data roaming if data is the problem. T-Mobile recommends dialing
#RON#(#766#) to make sure data roaming is enabled, where applicable. The phone’s own setting may also need to be enabled; menu names differ by device. - Turn Airplane mode off. If it is already off, turn it on briefly and then off again to prompt the phone to reconnect.
- Try partner networks manually. In the phone’s mobile or network settings, switch network selection from automatic to manual and try each available T-Mobile roaming partner. T-Mobile says to try all partners in the country at least three times. Exact menu paths vary, so consult your phone’s user guide if needed.
- Restart the phone. Turn it off, wait about 10 seconds, then turn it back on.
- Check for a roaming block. A line-level restriction can prevent roaming even when the phone and destination are otherwise eligible. Check your account or contact T-Mobile if the steps above do not help.
These steps follow T-Mobile’s international travel troubleshooting guidance; they cannot guarantee service if a local network is unavailable.

No signal or a roaming error
If the phone cannot register on any network, focus on destination eligibility, handset compatibility, and network selection before changing data settings. Confirm Airplane mode is off, manually try the available partner networks, and restart. If none work, check whether roaming is blocked on the line. Do not assume a particular partner will be available: the networks offered can differ by destination and change over time.
Calls or texts are not going through
Check the number format
Verify the number and use the international dialing format required for the country you are calling. If an automated message gives you a two-digit number, T-Mobile says to enter it to complete the call.

Check Wi-Fi Calling
If the phone is connected to Wi-Fi and the call is using Wi-Fi Calling, troubleshoot that feature separately. Confirm that the Wi-Fi Calling icon is present when you expect the call to use Wi-Fi. If Wi-Fi drops or you leave its range, the call may switch to cellular, which could result in roaming charges.
Contact T-Mobile if calling still fails
T-Mobile lists international roaming care at +1-505-998-3793, which can be called from another line. If you cannot place a call, use Wi-Fi messaging or another available phone to reach T-Mobile through its contact options. Support cannot guarantee that a roaming partner is available or that a local outage will be resolved immediately.

Calls and texts work, but mobile data does not
When voice or text works but data does not, check data-specific causes rather than repeatedly changing network selection.
- Verify data roaming. Check the phone’s data-roaming setting and confirm your plan permits data in the destination.
- Check for destination restrictions. T-Mobile notes that data roaming may be unavailable in some locations, including on cruise ships.
- Look for a usage alert. A text from T-Mobile may indicate that you reached the high-speed international data limit.
- Review data and APN settings. T-Mobile’s BYOD guidance lists
fast.t-mobile.comfor LTE devices andepc.tmobile.comfor non-LTE devices. It specifies IPv4/IPv6 for the APN protocol and IPv4/IPv6 or IPv4-only for the international roaming protocol. These are device-dependent settings, not instructions to change every phone. Check your device’s existing configuration and T-Mobile’s current BYOD APN guidance before editing them. - Temporarily disable a VPN. Turn off VPN settings or apps briefly and see whether data starts working. Restore the VPN afterward if you need it.
If data still fails after these checks, contact T-Mobile with your destination, phone model, plan, and any error message. Those details help distinguish a handset setting from a plan restriction or a local network issue.

Data works, but it is unusually slow
T-Mobile says that after the high-speed international data limit is reached, speeds are reduced to 256 kbps until the next bill cycle. This is different from having no signal or being unable to connect to a roaming partner. Check for a usage alert and verify the limits and terms that apply to your plan. T-Mobile points customers to International Pass for more high-speed international data; check current eligibility, allowance, and price before purchasing.

Avoid unexpected charges and misleading usage displays
- Watch for Wi-Fi Calling fallback. If Wi-Fi disconnects or you move out of range, a call may switch to cellular. On devices that offer the option, select Wi-Fi-only calling, or use Airplane mode and then re-enable Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Calling. Confirm the Wi-Fi Calling indicator before placing a call.
- Do not treat a delayed usage display as a real-time meter. T-Mobile says roaming data and text details may take up to 30 days to appear. Check the applicable plan terms and alerts rather than assuming the account display is current.
- Verify destination and plan terms. Included destinations, restrictions, and pass terms can change. Check the current T-Mobile information for your specific line before relying on included roaming or buying an add-on.
