What’s actually slowing this PC down?

First identify which connection is failing: your encoder sends one set of credentials to a Switchboard Live workflow, and Switchboard sends the stream to YouTube using a separate destination connection. Check whether Switchboard’s Confidence Monitor shows incoming video before changing YouTube settings. If it does not, troubleshoot the encoder-to-Switchboard workflow key and URL; if it does, look at the YouTube destination, event, or stream health.
Understand which stream key is failing
A Switchboard Live setup has two connection layers: the encoder sends video to a specific Switchboard workflow, and Switchboard routes that video to YouTube. The encoder uses the workflow’s server URL and stream key; YouTube is a separate destination. Each Switchboard workflow has its own URL/key pair. Do not substitute a YouTube key for a Switchboard workflow key, or vice versa. Switchboard’s workflow documentation describes the workflow credentials and status indicators.

Before troubleshooting, note the exact error text and identify where it appears: in your encoder, in Switchboard, or in YouTube Live Control Room. That location helps distinguish a credential mismatch from a destination or delivery problem.
If Switchboard is not receiving video
Verify the intended workflow credentials
- Open the intended workflow in Switchboard Live.
- Reveal that workflow’s key, which is hidden by default, and check the workflow URL and key against the encoder’s stream settings.
- If the key was reset, copy the newly generated key into the encoder. The old key will not work for the next broadcast.
- Start the encoder’s test signal and watch the workflow’s Confidence Monitor and status. Switchboard’s setup guide instructs users to place the workflow URL and key in the encoder and test by sending video to Switchboard. See Switchboard’s setup guidance.
A successful test is indicated by video in the Confidence Monitor and a change in status from “Not Receiving” to “Receiving.” This confirms the encoder-to-Switchboard leg; it does not by itself make the YouTube destination live. Switchboard’s Go Live button remains disabled until incoming video is detected. Switchboard’s workflow page documentation explains the status and monitor.

Check for an encoder or workflow conflict
- Confirm the encoder is running and that it is sending to the workflow you opened, not another workflow.
- Check whether another encoder or device is already sending to that same workflow. Switchboard says a workflow can receive content from only one encoder at a time when used by multiple devices. Use separate workflows when separate credential pairs are needed. Switchboard’s FAQ.
- Update the encoder software if it is outdated, then retry the test signal.
If the workflow still shows no incoming video after those checks, use Switchboard’s help button to open its knowledge base or submit a support ticket.
If Switchboard receives video but YouTube does not go live
Once Switchboard shows “Receiving,” stop changing the workflow key unless Switchboard reports a workflow credential problem. Check YouTube Live Control Room for the event’s specific status, health warning, or error. Switchboard receiving video isolates the initial encoder-to-workflow connection; it does not establish that YouTube has accepted or is broadcasting the destination feed.

Check YouTube’s key and destination status
If YouTube reports an invalid or unusable YouTube stream key, get a new key in YouTube Live Control Room and update the YouTube destination connection as appropriate for your setup. YouTube’s official third-party-encoder instructions recommend creating a new key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder when a key needs refreshing. Treat that as a YouTube credential, distinct from the key the encoder uses to reach a Switchboard workflow. YouTube: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
Match the exact configuration error
YouTube’s live-stream error guidance lists issues such as unsupported audio or video codecs, an incorrect codec profile, bitrate or resolution settings that do not match the supported configuration, and mismatched primary and backup stream parameters. Make the change that corresponds to the displayed error and the selected YouTube ingest settings rather than altering unrelated encoder settings speculatively. YouTube: Live streaming error messages.

Also check the encoder’s software version, previewed picture and sound, encoder error log, CPU load, local recording quality, and outbound internet strength. YouTube notes that when the stream looks healthy in the encoder, the outbound connection may be the problem. A good local preview alone does not prove that the stream is reaching YouTube reliably. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting steps.
If the stream schedules instead of going live
Switchboard’s FAQ identifies a missing stream title in the active template as a cause of this symptom. Stop the stream, update the YouTube title in the designated field, and try again. If it still does not connect, check the current error shown in YouTube Live Control Room and contact Switchboard support with the workflow status and observed behavior. Switchboard’s FAQ.
