The first option paces playback in real time; the second repeats the file indefinitely. Start with the command below, check the incoming preview and stream health, and make sure you have rights to broadcast both the video and audio.
Before you start
- Install FFmpeg and keep the forest video on the computer that will run the stream. The example below assumes one combined video-and-audio file.
- Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days, according to YouTube Help’s current getting-started guidance.
- Use a stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the full video bitrate plus audio. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; that is a platform recommendation, not a reliability guarantee.
- Confirm that your rights cover livestream transmission of both the imagery and sound, and any archive YouTube retains. Keep license documentation and check conditions such as attribution, commercial use, modifications, and duration.
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Treat that as an operational boundary: for a recording you need to keep, end and verify the archive in Studio, and retain a separate local master where appropriate. Automatic archiving does not ensure that FFmpeg runs without interruption or that the resulting archive is error-free.

Enable live streaming and get the stream key
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live to open Live Control Room. If live streaming is not enabled, follow YouTube’s on-screen eligibility and activation steps.
- Create a stream or select a scheduled event. Choose the intended privacy setting—public, private, or unlisted—especially when testing.
- In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key. Use the exact destination information YouTube provides; the combined destination format can vary.
- Keep the key private. It is a connection credential: do not publish it or share it, and reset it in Studio if it is exposed.
For a scheduled event, start FFmpeg and wait for its incoming preview before clicking Go live. Inspect the picture and listen to the sound first. For an immediate stream, follow the current Live Control Room flow and confirm that YouTube shows the stream as live.
Run FFmpeg with an infinite loop
Save the command below as a starting point for a 1080p30 H.264 stream with stereo AAC audio. Replace the filename and destination with your own. Do not paste a real stream key into a public post, shared script, or shell-history example.

-f flv "$STREAM_URL"Put -re and -stream_loop -1 before the matching -i: FFmpeg treats these as input options. -re reads the file at its native frame rate (equivalent to -readrate 1), which paces a file input for live output. -stream_loop -1 repeats the input infinitely. The encoding and destination options follow the input.
The example uses a 60-frame GOP: at 30 frames per second, that is a two-second keyframe interval. Its 10 Mbps video bitrate is YouTube Help’s recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p30; YouTube lists 5 Mbps as the minimum for that specific resolution and frame rate. Its stereo audio guidance is 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz. These are not universal settings: use the supported bitrate and frame rate appropriate to your target output, the source media, and your connection.

This command is an illustrative configuration, not a tested result. Actual behavior depends on your file, FFmpeg build, computer, network, and YouTube’s ingest behavior. If the file uses a different resolution or frame rate, adjust the video settings and keyframe interval accordingly.
Choose compatible output and network settings
Protocol and encoding
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264/H.265/AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant-bitrate encoding, and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP, and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. For SDR, its advanced settings include Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth. The sample command uses H.264, AAC, and the RTMPS-style destination placeholder, but use the exact URL and key from your Live Control Room.

Match bitrate to output and upload capacity
For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube Help’s undated encoder settings page, accessed in 2026, lists 5 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended. The appropriate bitrate depends on resolution and frame rate; do not treat 10 Mbps as a general requirement. YouTube also says the total stream bitrate must stay within available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% headroom. If your connection cannot sustain the planned rate, reduce resolution or frame rate and select a corresponding supported bitrate rather than copying the example unchanged.
YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast, checking the preview and stream-health messages, and monitoring audio and video quality during the stream.

Test, go live, and end the broadcast
- Check that the local file plays from beginning to end, has the expected image and sound, and does not contain material you lack permission to broadcast or archive.
- Run FFmpeg before the event. Watch the Live Control Room preview for black frames, stutters, or unexpected framing, and listen for level problems, silence, or loop discontinuities.
- For a scheduled event, click Go live after the preview is ready and checked. For an immediate stream, confirm the current Studio flow shows it live.
- Monitor FFmpeg output and YouTube stream health during the broadcast. End the event in the appropriate YouTube flow and stop the encoder after the event ends, following YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- If you need a recording, check the archive in Studio after ending the stream and keep a local master when needed.
Troubleshoot common problems
YouTube does not show an incoming preview
- Check that the stream URL and key came from the event you intend to use, and that you copied them exactly. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Studio and update the destination.
- Confirm that FFmpeg is still running and that the input filename and path are correct. Read the terminal output for file-open, authentication, or connection errors.
- Check that the channel is eligible for live streaming and that any activation steps are complete.
The stream buffers, drops frames, or has poor stream health
- Compare the total video and audio bitrate with stable available upload bandwidth, leaving YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Lower resolution or frame rate and choose a suitable bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the current settings.
- Check for competing network uploads and inspect YouTube’s stream-health messages. A wired Ethernet connection may be useful on a compatible computer and router, but YouTube does not require it and a cable alone does not guarantee a fix.
The picture or sound is wrong
- Verify the source file locally, then check the preview for black frames, unexpected aspect ratio, stutters, or a visible cut at the loop point.
- Confirm the file contains the intended ambience audio. If it is silent, the example’s audio encoding settings do not create sound; use a separate audio input only after deliberately looping and synchronizing it, then test the mix before going live.
- Make sure the chosen video settings suit the source’s resolution and frame rate, and that the keyframe interval is two seconds where possible and no more than four seconds under YouTube’s guidance.
The stream ends or the archive is missing
- An infinite input loop does not prevent a computer shutdown, process failure, network interruption, or YouTube ingest problem. Check the FFmpeg process and connection, then follow Live Control Room’s flow to resume or restart as appropriate.
- YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours; do not rely on it as a substitute for a local recording or as proof of uninterrupted operation. Verify the archive in Studio after the event.
