How to Troubleshoot Slow Wi-Fi When Your Internet Plan Is Fast

A fast plan does not guarantee fast Wi-Fi. Use wired, location, band, and device comparisons to pinpoint the cause before buying equipment or changing plans.

A fast internet plan can still feel slow over Wi-Fi. To find out whether the problem is wireless coverage, a device, shared network use, or the incoming service, compare a nearby Wi-Fi test with a wired Ethernet test, then check other devices and locations before replacing equipment or upgrading your plan.

Start by comparing Wi-Fi with Ethernet

Run speed tests under similar conditions so the results are useful to compare. First test over Wi-Fi near the main router. Then, if possible, connect the same device directly to the router with Ethernet and run the test again. If your computer has no Ethernet port, you may need a compatible USB Ethernet adapter. The FCC recommends a direct Ethernet connection as a way to get the highest speeds and reduce Wi-Fi congestion.

  • Ethernet is close to what you expect, but Wi-Fi is slow: focus on wireless coverage, interference, band choice, the device’s Wi-Fi capability, or competing traffic.
  • Ethernet is also unexpectedly slow: check the service, modem, router-to-modem connection, cable, ports, and device limitations. If the result stays low, contact your ISP.

The slowest component along the connection path can limit the result, so a low wired test does not by itself prove the internet plan is at fault. Google’s slow-internet troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking speeds and contacting the ISP when results fall below expectations or recurring problems continue.

Compare locations and devices

Repeat the Wi-Fi test close to the router, then in the room where you notice the slowdown. Try a second capable device in the same location.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
  • If the nearby test is much better, distance or obstacles such as walls and building materials may be weakening the signal.
  • If one device is slow while another performs well beside it, look at the slower device’s Wi-Fi hardware, software, settings, and supported Wi-Fi standards.
  • If several devices are slow only in one area, coverage is a stronger suspect than a single device problem.

A fast subscription does not guarantee that every device will receive the same speed over Wi-Fi. Distance, barriers, frequency band, interference, device capability, and other network use all affect performance.

Compare 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz

If your router and device allow you to choose a band, test both from the same location. Neither band is best in every situation:

  • Powerful Dual-Core 900MHz Processor – Handles multiple data streams simultaneously for reliable performance across your devices. Ensures smooth streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing without buffering or lag.
  • 5 GHz can provide higher speeds at shorter range.
  • 2.4 GHz can reach farther, but may be more crowded.

Nearby Wi-Fi networks and some devices, including microwaves or baby monitors, can interfere with wireless performance. Where practical, test closer to the router and away from a suspected source. The FCC’s consumer Wi-Fi guidance explains the differences between Wi-Fi bands and wired connections.

Improve router and mesh placement

Put the router in a central, open spot and off the floor when feasible. Avoid hiding it in a closet or cabinet or placing it behind solid barriers. Walls and other obstacles can weaken the signal.

  • READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

If you use mesh Wi-Fi, check the system’s point-placement or mesh test. A mesh point should have a strong connection back to the router, not just a strong signal to the device using it. Google Fiber advises placing a wirelessly connected extender roughly halfway between the router and the farthest area that needs coverage; move points closer together if the system reports a weak link. Restarting the network is also a reasonable basic troubleshooting step. See Google Fiber’s Wi-Fi speed and mesh placement guidance.

Check shared use and wired equipment

Devices share the connection’s available bandwidth. Repeat a test when other devices are not streaming, downloading large files, or otherwise using the network heavily, if possible. If performance improves, shared use is contributing to the slowdown.

For a wired test, check that the cable, port, switch, adapter, and device network card can handle the speeds you expect. Google recommends Cat 5e or Cat 6 Ethernet cables for speeds above 100 Mbps in its Nest Wifi and Google Wifi Ethernet guidance. A lower-capability part in the wired path can cap the test result.

When to contact your ISP

Contact your internet provider if repeat Ethernet tests are below the service expectation, several devices are affected, or the slowdown keeps returning. Ask whether there is a local service problem and whether the modem and service provisioning are operating correctly. If wired performance is normal but Wi-Fi remains poor, keep troubleshooting the wireless side rather than assuming the internet plan needs an upgrade.
