Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallSlow startup, lag while typing or scrolling, high CPU use, and high memory use are different symptoms—not one diagnosis. Note when the problem occurs and what action or project reproduces it, then isolate extensions, workspace conditions, and the process or task consuming resources. The steps below are specific to Visual Studio Code and JetBrains IDEs; menus and plugin requirements can vary by version.
Start with a repeatable baseline
Before changing settings or hardware, record the editor and version, operating system, project size and location, when the issue began, and any recent extension, plugin, settings, or project changes. Separate a slow launch from delayed typing, slow scrolling, high CPU, or heavy memory use. Close unrelated editor windows for a startup comparison, and repeat the same action under the same conditions so you can tell whether a change helped.

If possible, compare the affected project with a smaller folder, a single file, or an empty window. A slowdown that occurs only in one workspace may point toward its contents, indexing, or project-specific configuration rather than the editor as a whole.

Visual Studio Code: isolate extensions and inspect processes
Check whether an extension is involved
- In VS Code, open Help > Open Process Explorer, or run
code --statuswhile VS Code is already running. Inspect the process list for the extension host. High CPU use there is a reason to investigate extensions, not proof that a particular extension is responsible. - Try
code --disable-extensions, or disable extensions from the Extensions view, then repeat the action that was slow. This command starts VS Code with extensions disabled. - If the problem goes away, run F1 > Help: Start Extension Bisect to narrow down the extension, or disable groups selectively. Use F1 > Developer: Show Running Extensions to inspect running extensions; you can record a CPU profile while reproducing the slowdown.
The VS Code Performance Issues guide says, “High CPU consumption is often caused by an issue in an extension.” That observation concerns CPU consumption in VS Code; it does not establish that extensions explain every case of lag or high memory use. Read the VS Code Performance Issues guide.

- Not compatible with desktop (DIMM), DDR2, DDR3, DDR5, ECC Registered (RDIMM), ECC Load Reduced (LRDIMM), or ECC Unbuffered (ECC UDIMM) memory types
- Increases available memory capacity to enhance system responsiveness, application performance, and multitasking capabilities.
Profile lag in the editor window
- Open Help > Toggle Developer Tools, select the Performance tab, and start recording.
- For roughly 30–60 seconds, reproduce the specific lag—for example, type, scroll, or repeat the action that feels delayed.
- Stop the recording and save the profile. The capture duration is a troubleshooting procedure suggested by the VS Code guide, not a benchmark or expected fix time.
If the slowdown might depend on workspace size or content, compare the same action in a smaller folder, a single file, or an empty window. The VS Code guide also describes using Process Explorer and code --status to see which process is busy.
Investigate a slow VS Code launch
- Close all but one VS Code window, quit VS Code, then launch
code --prof-startup. - Find the two profile files this command creates in your home directory. Preserve them along with the launch details if you need to report the problem.
- To see startup timing details inside VS Code, run F1 > Startup Performance.
For a performance report, use Help > Report Issue and choose Performance Issue. Include repeatable steps and relevant process output or profiles. code --status only works when VS Code is already running.

JetBrains IDEs: check indexing, storage, and security scanning
If an IntelliJ-based IDE is slow to respond, check whether antivirus or firewall software is scanning the IDE or project files, whether the IDE or project is on a slow or network drive, and whether the project indexes unnecessary folders. JetBrains recommends fast local storage, avoiding network drives for project files, and excluding unnecessary folders from indexing. Do not disable security software as a general fix; use supported exclusions and follow your organization’s security policy. See JetBrains’ guide to IDEs that are slow to respond.

High CPU or interaction lag
When the slow action can be reproduced, open Help | Diagnostic Tools | Start CPU Usage Profiling, repeat the problematic actions several times, then stop profiling to save a snapshot. The snapshot helps identify where CPU time is spent; it is diagnostic evidence, not by itself proof of a cause. Follow the current instructions for your IDE version. JetBrains notes that IntelliJ IDEA, Android Studio, and PyCharm Community Editions 2025.x do not bundle the Async Profiler for IDE Performance Testing plugin; install it when that workflow requires it. Consult JetBrains’ performance-reporting instructions for the applicable version and workflow.

Slow startup or indexing
For startup, the reporting guide describes Help | Diagnostic Tools | Profile Slow Startup. For slow indexing, it describes Profile Indexing. Before using Invalidate and Restart, understand that it destroys Local History and indices; check the instructions for your IDE version and consider the consequences for your project before proceeding.
High memory use
If heavy memory use and frequent garbage collection continue after you have investigated the workload, and increasing heap size has not helped, JetBrains advises capturing a memory snapshot for diagnosis. The guide also documents -XX:+HeapDumpOnOutOfMemoryError for automatically creating a dump when an out-of-memory error occurs. Memory snapshots and heap dumps may contain sensitive source code; store them securely and review them before sharing. Do not change heap settings or buy more RAM until you know which memory measure is limiting performance.

Use the diagnosis to choose the next step
| What you observe | Useful check | What the result can tell you |
|---|---|---|
| VS Code slows down, and the extension host is busy | Disable extensions, then use Extension Bisect or selectively disable them | Whether extension activity is associated with the symptom |
| The whole VS Code window lags | Record a Developer Tools Performance profile while reproducing the lag | What is happening in the window during the slowdown |
| VS Code launches slowly | Use Startup Performance or code --prof-startup |
Startup timing details and profile files |
| A JetBrains IDE is slow to respond or indexes slowly | Check indexing scope, storage location, and security scanning; capture a relevant profile if needed | Whether the slowdown corresponds to indexing, environment, or profiled work |
| JetBrains memory use remains heavy | Capture a memory snapshot when the documented conditions apply | Evidence to investigate memory use; not a standalone diagnosis |
Address what the process list or profile actually identifies: an extension, rendering work, indexing, project conditions, or storage. Moving an IDE or project from a slow or network drive to fast local storage is a conditional option when storage is the relevant issue. An SSD is not a general remedy for a CPU-bound profile, an extension problem, or system-wide memory pressure. The cited guidance does not establish a universal RAM threshold or a quantified speed gain from these steps.
