If AT&T Fiber is slow or keeps disconnecting, first check for an outage and the gateway’s status lights. Then restart the gateway and compare AT&T’s gateway speed test with a device test. If the gateway result is healthy but Wi-Fi is poor, investigate coverage, interference, and device load; if service is still down or the gateway test remains poor, contact AT&T.
1. Check for an outage and inspect the gateway
Before changing Wi-Fi settings or buying equipment, check AT&T’s internet help page for outage checking and gateway status-light information. If AT&T reports an outage, follow its updates instead of repeatedly resetting equipment. If no outage appears, continue with a restart and speed comparison.

Status lights can help show whether the gateway is connected or reporting a problem, but they do not by themselves establish the cause. Use AT&T’s model-specific light guidance rather than assuming a particular color means the same thing on every gateway.
2. Restart the gateway safely
Restarting briefly disconnects devices using the gateway’s internet and Wi-Fi. AT&T’s restart instructions say to unplug the gateway’s power, wait 20 seconds, reconnect it, and wait for it to restart. AT&T’s general help page says the restart may take up to 10 minutes. Some gateway models can also be restarted through Smart Home Manager; availability depends on the model.

3. Compare the gateway test with a device test
AT&T provides two different kinds of speed measurement. Its equipment test measures between the gateway or hub and AT&T’s network. A device test measures from a phone, computer, or other device to the internet, using wired broadband, Wi-Fi, or cellular. Run the AT&T speed test while signed in, then test the device where you notice the problem.

| Test | What it measures | How to use the result |
|---|---|---|
| Gateway or equipment test | Connection between AT&T’s gateway or hub and AT&T’s network. | Helps assess the service reaching the gateway location. |
| Wired device test | Connection from a device to the internet without using the home Wi-Fi link for that test. | If this performs well while Wi-Fi is poor, the difference points toward a Wi-Fi or device-specific issue; it is not a definitive line diagnosis. |
| Wi-Fi device test | Connection from the device through the home Wi-Fi network to the internet. | A weak result may reflect signal reach, interference, device limits, or other factors in addition to the service connection. |
| Cellular device test | The device’s internet connection over cellular rather than the home network. | Can help compare the device’s general internet performance outside the home connection. |
For a wired comparison, use an Ethernet cable such as Cat 6 if the device has a compatible Ethernet port or adapter. The cable is a diagnostic aid, not a repair: it cannot resolve an AT&T outage, a line fault, or a defective gateway.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors4. If wired service is fine but Wi-Fi is weak
A slow Wi-Fi test alone does not prove that the fiber line is at fault. AT&T identifies the number and use of connected devices, device age and type, distance from the gateway, walls and floors, building materials, and interference as factors that can affect performance. Its connection optimization guidance also describes Smart Home Manager features for checking signal reach and managing network equipment.

- Test near the gateway, then in the room where the connection struggles. A large difference suggests coverage may be part of the problem.
- Temporarily disconnect devices that are not in use and see whether the affected device improves.
- Consider whether walls, floors, construction materials, appliances, or nearby Wi-Fi networks may be weakening or interfering with the signal.
- Check whether the issue affects every device or just one. If only one device is affected, its age, type, or connection may be relevant.
- Use Smart Home Manager to check Wi-Fi signal reach where available before considering an extender or mesh system.
Do not assume an extender will solve slow service: it may help with a diagnosed coverage problem, but it will not repair an outage or a poor gateway-to-network connection.

Contact AT&T if service remains down after the outage check and restart, or if the gateway test continues to show poor performance after the connection has returned. Those results can warrant checking the account, gateway, or service conditions; the tests help narrow the issue but do not identify a line fault on their own. Start with AT&T’s internet help and repair options. AT&T also has a small-business internet support page; its contact details are for business customers, so residential customers should use the support route for their own account.
