Before you buy a Steam game, check whether its style fits you, read recent reviews for repeated issues or strengths, confirm it supports your device, and compare the current price with how confident you feel. Steam’s score, system requirements, and compatibility labels are useful clues—not guarantees that you will enjoy the game or that it will run well on your setup.
Start with the kind of game you want
Decide what would make the purchase worthwhile for you: a particular genre, a relaxed or demanding pace, a strong story, multiplayer with friends, replay value, or ongoing development. Then compare those priorities with the game’s short description, tags, screenshots, and videos on its Steam store page.

Pay special attention to features that could make or break your decision. If you want a solo campaign, for example, look for evidence about the single-player experience rather than assuming a game’s overall popularity means it suits you. If you are wary of unfinished or frequently changing games, check whether the store page identifies the title as Early Access and read the developer’s stated plans and caveats.
Read reviews for patterns, not just the score
Steam says only reviews from players who purchased a game through Steam count toward its review score. Its review display combines an information-detection system with helpfulness votes to select individual reviews. The score and highlighted reviews can help you decide what to investigate, but they are not a personalized recommendation or a guarantee that the displayed views represent your priorities. Read written reviews that address the features you care about. Repeated, specific reports—such as crashes, server trouble, confusing progression, poor performance, or a satisfying amount of replay—are more useful than an isolated one-line verdict. Check review dates and playtime context where available: an older review may describe a different version of the game.
Steam’s review controls include date-range and playtime-related filters in the reviewed interface. Use them to find accounts that may be more relevant, while remembering that other players can have different hardware, preferences, and game versions. Review filters and review details can help you narrow what you read.

Check that the game fits your device
On the game’s Steam store page, check its supported operating systems and hardware requirements, then compare them with your own computer. Steam Support specifically recommends checking both. Steam Support’s system-requirements guidance explains where to look.

Meeting a listed minimum is not a promise of a particular frame rate, resolution, or visual quality on every configuration. If performance is important, look for recent reviews that discuss systems similar to yours, but treat those reports as context rather than a guarantee.

If you plan to play on Steam Deck
Inspect the Deck compatibility details on the store or library page instead of relying on a label alone. Valve defines Verified games as meeting its compatibility criteria. Playable games work but may require manual configuration, so read the listed caveats and decide whether the extra setup is acceptable. Compatibility reviews are ongoing; a missing label means there is no reviewed result to rely on, not proof that the game will fail. Compare the price with your confidence
Use the current price as part of the decision, not as evidence of quality. If the game seems like a good fit but reviews or compatibility details leave you uncertain, waiting for a sale can be a reasonable way to reduce the cost of that uncertainty. If you are comparing two games, weigh the same things for each: play style, recent review themes, device support, Deck compatibility if relevant, price, and refund eligibility.

Understand the refund terms before you buy
For games and software bought on Steam, Valve’s standard refund terms allow a request within 14 days of purchase if you have played for less than two hours. Valve says you can still submit a request outside those conditions, but it will be reviewed rather than automatically approved. Some jurisdictions may give consumers additional rights for faulty games. Steam’s refund policy sets out the current terms.
Do not assume the standard rule covers every transaction. Valve says purchases made outside Steam, such as third-party CD keys or Steam Wallet cards, cannot be refunded by Steam. Pre-release titles, downloadable content, in-game purchases, subscriptions, gifts, and bundles may have separate terms; check the policy for the purchase type you are considering. If you buy a game and may seek a refund, keep track of your purchase date and playtime.

- Read the store description, tags, and media; confirm the premise and play style match what you want.
- Choose the features that matter most to you and look for written reviews that discuss those specifics.
- Read recent reviews for repeated, concrete themes; note dates and playtime context when shown.
- Check supported operating systems and hardware requirements against your device. For Steam Deck, read the compatibility details and caveats.
- Check whether the game is released or in Early Access, and review any development plans or caveats on its store page.
- Decide whether the current price makes sense given what you learned, and know which refund terms apply before purchasing.
