Smartphones and social media may shape how children and teens think about their bodies and eating, especially when use involves appearance comparisons, edited photos, feedback-seeking, or harmful eating-related content. Studies and public-health guidance point to associations and possible pathways—not proof that a phone or social media alone causes an eating disorder. What a young person sees, how they engage with it, their age and individual circumstances all matter.
Is social media safe for kids’ body image?
There is no single answer for every child. In a 2023 U.S. Surgeon General advisory, 46% of adolescents aged 13–17 said social media made them feel worse about their body image. The same advisory reported that up to 95% of U.S. young people in that age group used a social media platform and one third used social media “almost constantly.” These are survey findings about reported use and feelings; the body-image figure is not an estimate that social media causes harm for 46% of teens. The advisory says important evidence gaps remain and that social media’s effects are not fully understood. U.S. Surgeon General, Social Media and Youth Mental Health (2023)

The American Psychological Association says appearance-related comparison and close attention to personal images and feedback are associated with poorer body image, disordered eating, and depressive symptoms, particularly among girls. It also cautions that available evidence cannot determine that social media causes harmful impacts on youth. American Psychological Association, Health Advisory on Social Media Use in Adolescence

Visual platforms can make comparison especially immediate: young people may encounter idealized images, influencers, edited selfies, and visible likes, then assess their own appearance against those standards. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) describes a clear association between comparing physical appearance on social media and potential body dissatisfaction. It also emphasizes that how a young person uses social media may matter as much as time spent on it. These are risk contexts, not a clinical checklist or a way to predict an individual child’s outcome. AAP, Digital Ecosystems, Children, and Adolescents: Technical Report (2026)

| Pattern to notice | Why it may be relevant |
|---|---|
| Appearance-focused content versus other interests | Repeated exposure to idealized appearance standards can invite comparison. |
| Passive viewing versus posting and seeking feedback | Attention to one’s own photos and responses such as likes may become part of how a young person evaluates their appearance. |
| Edited or harmful eating-related material versus diverse or recovery-oriented content | Content may reinforce appearance ideals or promote unhealthy behaviors; supportive material may instead offer connection and positive role models. |
| Use with caregiver discussion versus use without guidance | Mentoring can help a young person interpret what they see and talk through its effect on them. |
| Age, developmental stage, and individual vulnerability | The same content or interaction may affect young people differently; these factors are not a validated scoring system. |
These distinctions help frame a conversation about a child’s experience; they do not establish that one pattern is safe or harmful for every young person.
What does the smartphone study show—and not show?
A U.S. cohort study published by JAMA Network Open on September 25, 2026, followed 8,957 adolescents. In the study, 69.5% owned a smartphone at age 12. Adjusted longitudinal analyses associated ownership at 12 with higher reported rates of several eating-disorder symptoms at 14:

| Reported outcome at age 14 | Relative association with smartphone ownership at age 12 |
|---|---|
| Binge-eating symptoms | RR 1.67 (95% CI 1.11–2.52) |
| Inappropriate compensatory behaviors to prevent weight gain | RR 1.50 (95% CI 1.16–1.94) |
| Self-worth tied to weight | RR 2.03 (95% CI 1.28–3.19) |
| Any measured eating-disorder symptom | RR 1.49 (95% CI 1.19–1.87) |
These are relative associations from an observational study, not proof that owning a smartphone caused the symptoms, and not evidence that participants had clinical diagnoses. The study measured parent-reported smartphone ownership at 12 and self-reported symptoms at 14; it did not establish which apps participants used, what content they saw, or how much they used social media. It therefore cannot isolate a social-media pathway or explain the mechanism. Nagata et al., Smartphone Ownership and Eating Disorder Symptoms in Early Adolescence, JAMA Network Open (2026)
Can social media also be supportive?
Yes. The AAP notes that online support and pro-recovery communities can offer connection and positive role models. Such spaces may also prompt comparison, so their value depends on the young person and the particular community. Asking how a group or feed leaves a child feeling can help distinguish supportive connection from content that increases distress.

What can caregivers do?
Public-health guidance favors engaged, age-appropriate support rather than assuming that device ownership alone explains a child’s experience. The HHS advisory recommends a family media plan, tech-free zones, responsible-use modeling, age-appropriate technology skills, and reporting cyberbullying and abuse. The AAP also emphasizes caregiver mentoring and attention to content as well as duration. Practical starting points include:
- Talk calmly about what they see. Ask which accounts or posts affect how they feel about their body or eating, without criticizing their appearance or blaming them for using an app.
- Agree on boundaries together. Make a family media plan and designate tech-free zones. Revisit the plan as the child’s age, needs, or online experiences change.
- Pay attention to content and interactions. Discuss edited imagery, appearance comparisons, feedback-seeking, and eating-related material, not just minutes of use.
- Model the habits you want to encourage. Show responsible device use and help children build age-appropriate skills for navigating online spaces.
- Act on harmful interactions. Report cyberbullying or abuse and support the child in getting help if the experience is distressing.
No screen-time cutoff is established by these sources as a guarantee of healthy body image. HHS separately reports that more than three hours of daily social media use is associated with double the risk of certain mental-health problems, including depression and anxiety; that figure is not an eating-disorder threshold and should not be treated as one. If you are concerned about a child’s eating behaviors or distress, consult a qualified pediatric or mental-health professional rather than trying to diagnose the problem from their online habits.
