If your PS5 is lagging online, first check PlayStation Network and the affected game’s server status. If services are up, run the PS5 connection test, compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection, and only then investigate router or NAT settings. A successful connection test or a particular NAT type does not, by itself, identify the cause of in-game lag.
Start by narrowing down where the problem occurs
Notice whether the trouble affects one game or several online services, whether it began suddenly, and whether other devices on your network are also having trouble. These clues help choose what to check next, but none proves the cause on its own.

- One game only: Check that game’s service status as well as PlayStation Network. A game’s servers or a particular session can be affected even when the console connects to other services.
- Several services or devices: Check the home connection and router, in addition to service status.
- The PS5 connects, but a match still feels poor: Connection access and session quality are different. The console test does not report on every game server or establish the quality of a specific match.
Check PSN and the game’s servers
Check PlayStation Service Status and the affected game’s own status page. Sony recommends checking PSN status for connection errors and checking a game’s website when it may be offline. The PSN status page is dynamic, so view it when the problem is happening; this article does not assert a live service state.
If an outage or maintenance is reported, wait and try again after service is restored. Changing router settings during a service outage is unlikely to address the server-side issue.

Run the PS5 connection test
On the console, open Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection. This is a useful check of the console’s connection, not a complete diagnosis of in-game latency, packet loss, or server performance. Sony gives this path in its WS-114298-5 connection guidance.
If the test indicates a connection problem, review the saved network setup and confirm that the PS5 is using the intended Wi-Fi network and correct credentials. Sony says PS5 supports IPv6 connections but not IPv6-only networks. If your router is configured for IPv6 only, ask the router maker or ISP how to enable IPv4 rather than guessing at network settings. Sony also advises unfamiliar users to consult their ISP or network administrator before changing advanced IP, DNS, MTU, or proxy settings; see PlayStation’s internet-connection setup instructions.

Compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection
If the PS5 uses Wi-Fi, move it closer to the router and reduce obstructions between them. Then, if practical, connect it to the router with an Ethernet LAN cable and compare the connection. Sony recommends trying wired connectivity where possible and documents this PS5 setup route: Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection > Set Up Wired LAN > Connect.

A wired comparison helps distinguish a wireless-link problem from trouble farther upstream, but it is not a guaranteed lag fix. It cannot resolve a game-server outage or every cause of congestion. If you do not have a suitable cable, an Ethernet cable for PS5 is simply what you need to run this test—not a promise of better performance in every game.

Restart the console and network equipment
- Restart the PS5.
- Turn off the router, and the modem too if it is a separate device. Wait at least five minutes before powering the router back on, as Sony specifies in its NW-102468-1 troubleshooting guidance.
- After the network is back up, retry the connection and the affected game. If the problem continues, check the router maker’s instructions for available firmware updates; Sony advises updating router firmware in its WS-116520-5 guidance.
Temporary congestion can also clear without a configuration change. Sony advises waiting and trying again later when earlier connection steps do not resolve the issue; see its WS-116439-4 guidance.
Check NAT only after the basic tests
NAT is relevant to which players or services your console can connect to; it is not a direct measure of ping or proof that NAT causes lag. Sony’s NW-102468-1 guidance specifically recommends removing multiple NAT routers when troubleshooting that connection error. This may apply if an ISP gateway/router is connected to a second router.

Identify whether your setup has one router or more than one before changing anything. If you are unsure, ask your ISP or router manufacturer about the topology and options. Do not assume that bridge mode, port forwarding, or a firewall change is appropriate for every home network.

That publisher guidance is useful context for matchmaking and peer connectivity; it is not a current Sony PS5 technical specification, and it does not establish that Type 3 causes high ping or that Type 1 is required for normal play.

Leave port changes as a conditional last step
Port forwarding is not a general PS5 lag remedy. For the specific PS5 error WS-116520-5, Sony says “If possible” to try opening these ports and tells users to contact their ISP for details:
- TCP: 80, 443, 3478, 3479, 3480
- UDP: 3478, 3479, 49152–65535
Those numbers belong to that error’s troubleshooting guidance; they are not a universal recipe for every game or router. The right procedure depends on the router setup, ISP restrictions, and affected service. Consult the ISP or router manufacturer before making changes, and do not broadly expose the console’s connection.
