Choose a satellite-based wildfire detection service by matching its coverage, observation schedule, alert delay, detection limits, location accuracy, and data terms to the time and workflow your organization has to respond. A satellite alert is a thermal anomaly to investigate—not confirmation of a wildfire, a fire perimeter, or a guarantee of early warning.
What a satellite fire alert tells you
Active-fire products flag heat detected by a satellite sensor. The flagged location is not proof of a wildfire, and the displayed pixel does not mean the entire area it represents is burning. Hot smoke, agriculture, industrial heat, prescribed burns, and other sources can produce anomalies; clouds and other conditions can also obscure a fire. NASA’s FIRMS map cautions that these detections have limited accuracy and states: “Do not use for the preservation of life or property. Satellite-derived active fire / thermal anomalies have limited accuracy.” NASA FIRMS map and disclaimer.

Compare the factors that determine whether a service fits
Ask vendors for specifications and evidence tied to your actual area of interest, rather than relying on a headline claim such as “near real time.” The practical question is whether an alert can arrive with enough time and usable location detail for your team to act.

Just power on the device, download the official app, and pair it with your smartphone in seconds. Enjoy remote access to live video and playback via WiFi or mobile data, backed by comprehensive warranty and professional after-sales support for total peace of mind.
Coverage and observation schedule
Confirm that the service covers the whole operating area and ask how often it observes each location, at what times, and with what expected gaps. Distinguish satellite observation cadence from the time needed to process and deliver a detection. A fast algorithm cannot detect a fire before a satellite observes it.
Ask for expected revisit gaps by location and how cloud cover affects observations. OroraTech’s support documentation, for example, describes 30-minute geostationary (GEO) and 60–90-minute low-Earth-orbit (LEO) update intervals. These are provider statements, not guarantees that every location will receive an alert on that schedule. OroraTech: Fire Events not detected.
End-to-end alert latency
Request separate timing definitions for observation-to-downlink, algorithm processing, and customer notification. Also ask how the vendor measures the figures, what service levels apply, and how outages are reported. OroraTech says detections are processed within three minutes after data receipt; that interval does not include the wait for an observation or necessarily describe the full time until a customer receives an alert.

A short processing claim on its own is not a measure of warning time.
Resolution and minimum detectable fire
Resolution describes the spatial scale of a product, not a promise to detect every fire of a particular size. Ask what minimum detectable fire size assumes, whether detection thresholds vary with vegetation, terrain, weather, and viewing geometry, and how the provider defines a missed detection.
NASA reports FIRMS active-fire points at 1 km for MODIS and 375 m for VIIRS, with data updated every three hours. These are distinct sensor products and spatial scales, not interchangeable measures of guaranteed detection capability. NASA Applied Sciences: Fires.
Location uncertainty
Ask for a stated geolocation error measure and its meaning in practice. A point alert with several hundred metres of uncertainty may help prioritize an area but may not identify a specific asset or access route. Confirm that the error measure applies to the product, sensor, and operating conditions you are evaluating.

Reliability, false alerts, and validation
Request independently evaluated detection and false-alarm results, along with the ground-truth method, validation geography and season, and treatment of industrial heat, agricultural fires, and prescribed burns. Published specifications alone do not establish field accuracy across different fuels, weather, regions, or fire sizes.

The sources available for this comparison do not establish a named independent accuracy statistic or a cross-provider benchmark. Do not treat a provider’s own performance claim as an independently verified result; ask for validation evidence relevant to your area.
Workflow, support, and terms
Check whether alerts can reach the people who can act on them and fit your existing tools and procedures. Confirm API or GIS integration, alert channels, data retention, user support, license limits, data rights, and any restrictions on sharing or operational use. Ask for current pricing, coverage tiers, and minimum commitments directly from each vendor; the public sources cited here do not provide a comparable price list.

NASA FIRMS provides active-fire data from MODIS and VIIRS. NASA Applied Sciences lists MODIS point resolution at 1 km and VIIRS at 375 m, and says FIRMS is updated every three hours. Those figures give buyers a public reference for sensor scale and update cadence, not a service-level commitment or assurance that a fire will be seen.

FIRMS is useful for understanding active-fire data and its limitations. Its own disclaimer says not to use it for preservation of life or property, so organizations should not treat it as a substitute for a life-safety alerting system.
Read commercial specifications in context
NASA’s Commercial Satellite Data Acquisition (CSDA) listing for OroraTech OTC-P1 Level 2 near-real-time active-fire detections states a 200 m product resolution, median latency below one hour, and minimum detectable fire size of 4 × 4 m. Those are listed product specifications, not evidence of independent accuracy across all operating conditions. NASA notes that commercial products are subject to CSDA review and approval and applicable licenses. NASA CSDA: OroraTech.
OroraTech’s separate support documentation describes OT-NRT as a closed beta, identifies eight OTC-P1 satellites, gives a 200 × 200 m² resolution, and states an expected geolocation accuracy of about 600 m CE90. This is a provider-stated expectation, not an independent benchmark. The CSDA listing and beta documentation describe products and status differently; verify current availability, specifications, access, and licensing directly with the provider before relying on either description for procurement. OroraTech: NRT closed beta.
Turn the comparison into a procurement decision
- Define the operating area and response window. Map the locations that matter and determine how much time your team needs to verify an alert and take action.
- Ask each vendor the same questions. Obtain coverage and revisit details, full latency stages, resolution, detection assumptions, geolocation error, reliability evidence, integrations, support, and licensing.
- Test operational fit. Confirm who receives alerts, how they are checked against official reporting, and what happens when an alert is uncertain, late, or unavailable.
- Review evidence and terms before committing. Require validation relevant to your geography and use case, and confirm current product status, pricing, data rights, and service commitments in writing.
A service is not suitable for life-safety use merely because its product page advertises rapid alerts or fine resolution. Make that judgment only within your organization’s emergency response and verification framework.
