The fastest way to fix a badly performing or crashing PC game on a handheld is to diagnose the symptom before changing settings. Record the exact handheld model, operating system, game, launcher, error message, and whether the problem affects one title or several. Then work from low-risk checks—restart, updates, requirements, and file verification—to heat, drivers, device-specific settings, and finally hardware support.
Start by classifying what is failing
“Poor performance” and “crash” describe several different faults. A game that closes to the desktop needs a different path from a handheld that freezes, restarts, or displays a system error. Write down what happens and when it happens before changing anything.

- Low frame rate: The game remains playable but renders slowly.
- Stuttering: Frame delivery repeatedly pauses or hitches, often during loading, shader compilation, or busy scenes.
- Game crash: The title closes, returns to the launcher, or shows an error while the operating system remains usable.
- Full freeze: Windows or SteamOS stops responding, not just the game.
- Restart or shutdown: The handheld reboots or powers off during play.
- Launch failure: The game never gets past its launcher or a “preparing to launch” state.
Also note whether the issue appears at launch, in one scene, after switching applications, after a long session, or only while running on battery. Record any recent game, operating-system, driver, BIOS, firmware, or graphics-setting change. This creates a useful baseline and prevents several unrelated changes from hiding the cause.

This is a practical branching aid, not an official scoring system. A single game can expose a system problem, and a system that appears stable elsewhere can still fail under one title’s workload.

1. Restart, update, and check requirements
Restart both the game and the handheld
Close the title normally, restart the handheld, and launch it again before making more invasive changes. A restart clears a stuck process and temporary resource pressure. If the device is completely unresponsive, use the model’s documented forced-shutdown procedure rather than repeatedly holding the power button while it is still responding.
Install supported updates
Install pending operating-system, device, launcher, and game updates from their supported channels. On a Steam Deck, Steam’s software troubleshooting guidance places updating and restarting among the first checks. On a Windows handheld, run Windows Update and then check the device maker’s support page for the exact model’s BIOS, firmware, graphics, chipset, and control-software updates. Do not assume a driver intended for a similar-looking model is appropriate.
Compare the handheld with the game’s requirements
Check the game’s published minimum and recommended specifications against the exact processor, graphics hardware, memory, and operating system in your handheld. A device at or near the minimum can still experience launch or performance problems; meeting a listed minimum is not a guarantee of a stable frame rate on a small, power-limited system. Treat the comparison as a feasibility check, not a promise.

If the launcher offers a file-integrity or file-verification function, run it and allow the process to replace damaged or missing files. This is less disruptive than reinstalling the entire title. Restart the launcher after verification and test the same scene or launch step that previously failed.
2. Separate a game-specific problem from a device problem
Test at least one other installed game that normally works on the handheld. If only one title fails, concentrate on its requirements, files, patches, launcher, and compatibility settings. If several unrelated games show the same slowdown or crash, move system software, heat, background processes, power behavior, and hardware higher on the list.

Timing provides another clue. A failure that occurs at the same menu or scene points toward the title or its files. A failure after a long session, while charging, or after the fan becomes unusually loud points toward sustained heat or power behavior. A failure when switching applications can indicate resource pressure or an operating-system problem. These patterns guide the next test; they do not prove a cause on their own.
3. Reduce the game’s workload as a controlled test
For a game that launches but runs poorly, temporarily lower resolution, texture quality, shadows, effects, view distance, or other demanding settings. Limit the frame rate if the game or handheld provides a supported limiter. Change one group of settings at a time, replay the same section, and record whether frame pacing or stability changes.

This is a troubleshooting experiment, not a guaranteed fix. Lower settings cannot repair a damaged installation, a faulty driver, inadequate cooling, or a game that is incompatible with the operating system. If performance does not change after a substantial reduction, restore the settings you can tolerate and continue with system checks instead of lowering everything indefinitely.
4. Check heat, airflow, power mode, and background load
Inspect the physical setup
Use the handheld on a firm, unobstructed surface. Do not place it on bedding, clothing, or another soft material that can cover intake or exhaust openings. Check whether a case, dock, dust buildup, or nearby object blocks the vents. ASUS support guidance identifies blocked vents, dust, environmental conditions, fan wear, and heavy resource use as possible contributors to overheating and recommends a suitable fan mode on supported products.
Correlate symptoms with heat and fan behavior
Observe whether the slowdown begins as the device becomes hot, the fan changes speed, or the session continues for a long time. A CPU slowdown that coincides with a game slowdown is a reasonable clue for overheating, according to Steam’s hardware troubleshooting guidance, but warmth alone does not prove thermal throttling. Use the handheld’s available monitoring tools, the visible change in fan behavior, and repeatable timing together.

Look for competing workloads
On Windows, open Task Manager and check whether another application is consuming unusual CPU, memory, disk, or network resources while the game runs. Close unnecessary launchers, browsers, recording tools, downloads, and overlays for a test. Do not terminate a process if you do not know what it does; focus on identifiable applications and restart if the system becomes less stable.

Choose a performance or fan profile that the manufacturer documents for your model and operating mode. Compare battery and plugged-in behavior, because a handheld may apply different power limits. Keep the comparison controlled: use the same game scene, resolution, frame-rate limit, and background applications.
Clean cautiously
Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions for the exact handheld. ASUS warns against using powerful compressed-air devices such as air compressors because excessive pressure can damage fan blades. Do not open the device unless you are qualified and the warranty or service terms allow it. A cooling accessory is not a universal remedy; diagnose airflow and system behavior first.
5. Windows handheld: update the right components
For a Windows handheld, update Windows, BIOS, firmware, graphics drivers, chipset drivers, and the manufacturer’s control software only through official support channels for the exact model. A driver update can improve compatibility, but mixing packages from another model can create new crashes or remove device-specific controls.
When an update triggered the problem
Write down which update was installed and when the symptom began. If the timing is direct, use the manufacturer’s documented uninstall or rollback procedure for that driver or update. Roll back only the affected component, test the original failing scenario, and avoid stacking additional changes until you know whether the symptom changed.

Do not treat a BIOS rollback as interchangeable with a graphics-driver rollback. Firmware procedures can have model-specific prerequisites and recovery risks; follow the maker’s instructions exactly and keep the device on reliable power during the process.

Steam Deck troubleshooting steps are not interchangeable with Windows handheld procedures. Use the Deck’s own system-update controls, restart after updates, and run the launcher’s file-verification function for a title that will not start or behaves unexpectedly.
Optional Beta channel test
Steam’s software guide discusses opting into a Beta channel when performance or stability problems continue. This is an optional, Steam Deck-specific diagnostic and update path, not a universal recommendation for Windows handhelds. Beta software can change system behavior, so record the current channel and your symptoms before switching. If the issue remains, return to the supported channel or follow Steam Support’s escalation guidance.
7. ROG Ally settings require model-specific caution
ROG Ally graphics-memory allocation settings documented by ROG Support apply to supported Ally models and software versions. They are not a universal handheld-PC recommendation and should not be copied to a Steam Deck or another Windows device. If an Ally-specific setting is relevant, confirm the exact model, current software, and the manufacturer’s instructions before changing it, then test one game under the same scene and power conditions.
8. Treat full freezes and restarts as system-level faults
If Windows or SteamOS becomes unresponsive, the entire handheld restarts, or a system error appears, stop assuming the game alone is responsible. Save work when possible, restart safely according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and begin system-level checks.
Run available diagnostics
Use the manufacturer’s built-in hardware and system diagnostics when available. Pay particular attention to fan, memory, storage, and other tests that report a definite fault. A diagnostic result that identifies a hardware problem is a reason to stop experimenting with game settings and arrange service.
Escalate persistent failures
Contact the device maker or an authorized repair provider when diagnostics indicate a fault, the handheld repeatedly freezes or restarts, or supported updates and basic ventilation checks do not resolve the problem. Describe the exact model, operating system, affected games, error text, update history, and the tests already completed. This is more useful than reporting only that the device “runs badly.”
9. Use reset and reinstallation only as late-stage recovery
System restore, factory reset, or operating-system reinstallation can remove settings, applications, and personal data. Back up saves and important files first, confirm cloud synchronization, and use the device maker’s model-specific recovery instructions. These steps belong after updates, file verification, thermal checks, driver review, and diagnostics—not as the first response to a single-game crash.

10. A repeatable troubleshooting checklist
- Write down the model, operating system, game, launcher, exact symptom, error message, and when it occurs.
- Test whether another game shows the same behavior.
- Restart the game and handheld.
- Install supported game, operating-system, launcher, and device updates.
- Compare the handheld’s hardware and operating system with the game’s published requirements.
- Verify the affected game’s files through the launcher.
- Lower one group of graphics settings and repeat the same scene as a controlled test.
- Check vents, surface, fan behavior, heat, power mode, and competing background workloads.
- On Windows, review official model-specific BIOS, firmware, chipset, and graphics-driver guidance.
- If the issue began after an update, follow the documented rollback path for that component.
- For full freezes, restarts, or system errors, run manufacturer diagnostics.
- Escalate to official support or authorized repair when the fault persists or diagnostics report hardware trouble.
What not to do
- Do not apply Steam Deck instructions to a Windows handheld, or Windows driver advice to SteamOS.
- Do not change graphics-memory allocation or power settings without confirming that the option belongs to your exact model.
- Do not diagnose thermal throttling from a warm case alone.
- Do not use an air compressor to clean a fan.
- Do not install drivers or BIOS files intended for a different model.
- Do not reset the operating system before backing up data and exhausting less disruptive checks.
- Do not assume a generic “PC optimizer” will fix a game, driver, cooling, or hardware fault.
When the evidence points to hardware
A problem is increasingly likely to need service when multiple games fail, the device freezes or restarts outside games, fan diagnostics report an error, storage or memory tests fail, or the symptom remains after supported updates, file verification, controlled graphics tests, and ventilation checks. At that point, continued setting changes can obscure the evidence. Give the manufacturer your reproducible steps and diagnostic results so it can determine whether repair or replacement is appropriate.
