Best Kobo eReaders for Former Kindle Users: How to Choose the Right Model

A Kobo can replace a Kindle for library loans and compatible files, but Amazon purchases do not automatically transfer. Compare the three current Kobo models and check your books and library before buying.

A Kobo can replace a Kindle for many readers, especially people who borrow ebooks from a public library or already own compatible EPUB and PDF files. It does not, however, automatically import an Amazon Kindle Store library. Before buying, check your library’s Kobo support and verify the file rights for the Kindle titles you cannot lose.

First, decide whether Kobo can replace your Kindle

The hardware switch is straightforward; the content switch is not. Kobo readers support widely used formats such as EPUB, EPUB3, PDF, MOBI, CBZ and CBR, but format support does not cancel digital-rights restrictions. An EPUB file without protection can generally be copied to a Kobo. A protected file may require an approved Adobe Digital Editions workflow, and a Kindle Store purchase may remain tied to Amazon’s ecosystem.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That makes Kobo a strong fit in three situations:

  • You borrow a substantial share of your reading from a library that supports Kobo’s OverDrive integration.
  • You buy ebooks from stores that provide compatible, legally usable files.
  • You keep your Kindle for titles that cannot be transferred and want a better fit for library borrowing, colour content, buttons or annotation.

It is a poor assumption that buying a Kobo creates a one-click copy of every Kindle purchase or Kindle Unlimited loan. Check important books individually before selling or retiring your Kindle.

The three current Kobo models for former Kindle users

Kobo’s US comparison page displayed the following prices when checked in 2026. They are Kobo-store prices, not Amazon prices, and can change; verify the current local price before ordering.

The storage figures are device capacities. Kobo also presents approximate library-size estimates, but those are manufacturer estimates rather than a guarantee of usable space: books with complex layouts, images or large comic files consume more storage.

Which Kobo should a former Kindle owner buy?

Choose Kobo Clara BW for novels and maximum portability

Clara BW is the focused choice when nearly everything you read is ordinary black-and-white text. Its monochrome E Ink Carta 1300 HD panel keeps the recommendation centered on crisp text instead of colour covers or illustrations. A six-inch reader fits easily in a small bag and is less distracting than a larger device for one-handed reading.

The 16 GB capacity is ample for a text-heavy library, while USB-C simplifies charging with current cables. ComfortLight PRO lets you adjust the front lighting for evening reading, and IPX8 water resistance is useful around a bath, pool or rainy commute. Kobo lists support for 15 formats, including EPUB, EPUB3, PDF, MOBI, CBZ and CBR, so the device is not limited to books purchased from Kobo.

Clara BW is the least suitable option if colour diagrams, comics or illustrated children’s books are central to your reading. Those files will open, but the display itself remains monochrome.

Choose Kobo Clara Colour when colour matters but size should not

Clara Colour uses a six-inch Kaleido 3 colour display and 16 GB of storage. It is the compact colour choice for readers who want colour covers, maps, charts, comics or illustrated books without moving to a seven-inch reader.

The trade-off is control rather than basic reading: Clara Colour is not compatible with Kobo Stylus, so it is not the model for handwritten notes or stylus markup. It also lacks the Libra line’s physical page-turn buttons. If you turn pages by tapping or swiping and value a small device, that is unlikely to matter. If you prefer tactile buttons or regularly annotate, move up to Libra Colour.

Colour E Ink is not equivalent to a phone or tablet display. Colour content is rendered at a lower effective pixel density than black-and-white text on the Libra Colour, and colour screens can look less bright or less contrasty than monochrome E Ink. Buy Clara Colour for useful, low-power colour—not for tablet-like saturation.

Choose Kobo Libra Colour for buttons, space and annotation

Libra Colour is the most flexible of the three. Its seven-inch screen gives PDFs, graphic novels and large-print settings more room than either Clara. Physical page-turn buttons help readers who dislike repeated swipes, have limited dexterity or read while holding the device in one hand.

Rank #2
Kobo Clara Colour | Colour eReader | 6” Glare-Free Colour E Ink Kaleido™ 3 Display | Dark Mode Option | Waterproof | Audiobooks | 16GB of Storage | Black
  • 𝗕𝗥𝗢𝗪𝗦𝗘 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗 𝗘𝗕𝗢𝗢𝗞𝗦 𝗜𝗡 𝗙𝗨𝗟𝗟 𝗖𝗢𝗟𝗢𝗨𝗥 - Read in colour with a 6” E Ink Kaleido 3 display to enjoy eBook covers, comics, graphic novels, illustrations, and more.
  • 𝗛𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗟𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧 𝗜𝗡 𝗖𝗢𝗟𝗢𝗨𝗥 - With multiple colours available at the touch of a finger, you can highlight your eBooks. Add, erase, or change colours as you go, and easily see all your highlights by chapter at a glance.
  • 𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗬 𝗢𝗡 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗘𝗬𝗘𝗦 - ComfortLight PRO automatically reduces blue light and personalize your reading settings via font size, line spacing, or even Dark Mode
  • 𝗪𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗢𝗙 𝗗𝗘𝗦𝗜𝗚𝗡 - Full waterproof protection and meets the requirements of IPX8 rating – waterproof for up to 60 minutes in up to 2 metres of water.
  • 𝗕𝗘𝗧𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗕𝗬 𝗗𝗘𝗦𝗜𝗚𝗡 - Made with recycled and ocean-bound plastic and repairability to waterproof protection.

The screen specification distinguishes 300 PPI for black-and-white content from 150 PPI for colour content. Plain text therefore remains sharp, while colour pages have lower pixel density. That distinction matters if you are comparing it with a monochrome Kindle: the colour mode is an added capability, not a promise of monochrome-level detail for every coloured image.

Libra Colour has 32 GB of storage, IPX8 water resistance and support for Kobo Stylus. The stylus is an additional purchase, not an in-box accessory. Confirm the exact stylus generation and compatibility at the time of purchase rather than assuming every Kobo pen works with every model.

Screen size, colour and controls: the practical trade-offs

If your priority is… Best match Why
Sharp, distraction-free novel reading Clara BW Monochrome E Ink display and compact six-inch body
Colour in the smallest reader Clara Colour Six-inch Kaleido 3 colour display
More words per page or easier PDF viewing Libra Colour Seven-inch screen and 32 GB capacity
Physical page-turn controls Libra Colour Dedicated buttons; neither Clara model has them
Handwritten notes Libra Colour Stylus support; the stylus is sold separately
Lowest listed US price Clara BW $159.99 at the time of the 2026 Kobo-store check

For a former Kindle owner, the most important choice is usually not processor speed. It is whether you want a monochrome text reader, compact colour, or a larger colour reader with controls and a pen option.

What happens to your Kindle books?

Do not treat “supports EPUB” as “opens every Kindle purchase.” The file format and the rights attached to a file are separate issues.

Books that may work directly

Your own DRM-free EPUB or PDF files can be copied to a Kobo over USB. Kobo’s instructions describe connecting the reader, opening its storage on a computer and copying compatible files into the device. After safely ejecting the reader, the books should appear in the Kobo library.

Some books obtained from a compatible source use Adobe DRM rather than being DRM-free. Kobo directs users to Adobe Digital Editions for that workflow. You generally authorize the computer and reader with the same Adobe account, download the licensed book in Digital Editions and transfer it to the Kobo from there. This is a supported path for books supplied under that system; it is not evidence that an Amazon purchase will transfer.

Kindle purchases that remain tied to Amazon

Amazon-supplied Kindle files can have ecosystem-specific rights. A title may be available in a compatible edition elsewhere, but that is a title-by-title question, not a guaranteed migration route. Kindle Unlimited access is also a subscription entitlement rather than a permanent, transferable file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For each essential book, identify the edition you legally own and check whether the publisher or another authorized seller provides a compatible, usable file. Keep the Kindle account or device for books that remain there. Do not make DRM removal part of a routine setup plan: legality, tools and permitted uses vary by country and by work, and the Kobo documentation does not establish a general Kindle-purchase conversion method.

  • IPX8 WATERPROOF EREADER - Full waterproof protection and meets requirements of IPX8 rating - waterproof for up to 60 minutes in up to 2 meters of water
  • BETTER BY DESIGN - Thoughtfully made with recycled and ocean-bound plastic and repairability to waterproof protection

A safe file-checking workflow

  1. Make a list of the Kindle titles you read most often, including subscriptions or borrowed titles you do not own permanently.
  2. For each title, check the publisher or authorized store for an EPUB or PDF edition and note whether it is DRM-free or uses Adobe DRM.
  3. Test one nonessential compatible file on the Kobo before buying a large collection of replacement editions.
  4. Keep titles with unresolved rights on the Kindle ecosystem rather than deleting the account or device.
  5. Use USB transfer for DRM-free files and Adobe Digital Editions only when the book’s license specifically supports that workflow.

Library borrowing: check this before you buy

Kobo’s current OverDrive documentation lists Libra Colour, Clara Colour and Clara BW among newer models that support direct library borrowing. Libby advises using the same library card on Kobo and in the Libby app. You still need a valid card, and the ebook must be available in that library’s catalog under an eligible lending arrangement.

Availability is not universal. Library systems differ by country, region and institution; some catalogs have limited ebook licenses, waiting lists or titles that cannot be sent directly to an eReader. A Kobo’s support for OverDrive does not make every library compatible.

Verify your library in three steps

  1. Open your library’s website or ask the library whether its Libby/OverDrive ebook catalog supports direct borrowing on Kobo in your country.
  2. Sign in to Libby with the card you intend to use and search for several books you actually borrow, not just bestsellers.
  3. Confirm the same card and account can be used on the Kobo and check the loan period, holds and renewal rules before relying on the reader as your only device.

If library borrowing is your main reason to leave Kindle, this check is more important than a small difference in storage or front-light controls.

Battery expectations and charging

Battery figures in Kobo’s product material are manufacturer estimates under specified settings, not independent comparative tests.

Model Quoted maximum Conditions stated by Kobo
Clara BW Up to 53 days on one charge 30 minutes of reading per day, front light at 10%, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth off
Libra Colour Up to 40 days on one charge 30 minutes of reading per day, front light at 30%, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth off
Clara Colour Not stated in the supplied product figures Do not infer a runtime from either other model

Actual runtime changes with front-light brightness, wireless syncing, audiobook or Bluetooth use, page-refresh behavior and battery age. Treat the figures as an indication of low-frequency charging, not a guarantee that your usage will last that long.

Formats, comics and PDFs

All three models are intended for common ebook files, and Kobo lists EPUB, EPUB3, PDF, MOBI, CBZ and CBR among supported formats. That broad list helps when moving from a mixed library, but it does not mean every file will display equally well.

  • Reflowable EPUB: usually the easiest format for changing font size, margins and line spacing.
  • PDF: preserves the original page layout but can feel cramped on a six-inch screen, especially for technical pages or two-column documents. The Libra Colour’s larger panel gives such files more room.
  • CBZ and CBR: useful for comics, where colour support on either Colour model can improve covers and artwork.
  • MOBI: listed as supported, but check a sample file if your existing collection uses unusual formatting or embedded fonts.

DRM status still controls what you can open. A supported extension is not permission to bypass a license.

Storage and everyday ownership

Clara BW and Clara Colour each provide 16 GB; Libra Colour provides 32 GB. Text novels are small, so 16 GB can hold a large reading library. Illustrated books, comics and PDFs are larger, making Libra Colour’s capacity more useful for readers who keep many such files locally.

USB-C is specified for Clara BW. Regardless of model, plan to keep the original cable and use the reader’s safe-eject process after copying books. Removing it during a transfer can leave an incomplete file or force a library rescan.

Decision guide for common former-Kindle profiles

You read mostly novels and want the smallest replacement

Pick Clara BW. You give up colour, buttons and stylus support, but get a focused monochrome reader with 16 GB, front-light controls and waterproofing.

You borrow books and want covers or illustrations in colour

Pick Clara Colour if compactness is more important than controls. First verify that your library supports direct Kobo borrowing and that your frequently borrowed titles are in its eligible catalog.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You read comics, PDFs or large-print books

Start with Libra Colour. The seven-inch screen and 32 GB capacity reduce the compromises of dense or image-heavy files. Remember that colour content is specified at 150 PPI, while black-and-white content is 300 PPI.

You annotate or insist on physical page-turn buttons

Pick Libra Colour and budget separately for the compatible Kobo Stylus if you need handwriting. Neither Clara model supports that stylus.

You want to abandon Amazon completely

Do not buy until you have audited your essential Kindle titles and confirmed your library. A Kobo can become your primary reader while the Kindle ecosystem remains necessary for books whose rights do not provide a legal compatible file.

Pre-purchase checklist

  • Check the current Kobo-store price in your country; the listed US prices were time-sensitive figures from 2026.
  • Confirm your library supports Kobo borrowing through Libby/OverDrive and that your card is valid.
  • List essential Kindle books and verify each title’s legally usable file or alternative edition.
  • Choose monochrome Clara BW for text, Clara Colour for compact colour, or Libra Colour for a larger screen, buttons and stylus support.
  • Match storage to your files: 16 GB for mainly novels, 32 GB if you keep many comics, PDFs or illustrated books.
  • Check the exact stylus generation and model compatibility before purchasing; the pen is separate.
  • Keep your Kindle account or device until you have tested your replacement files and library loans.

Bottom line for a Kindle-to-Kobo switch

For most former Kindle users, the right Kobo depends on reading material rather than brand loyalty. Clara BW is the safest text-first recommendation, Clara Colour adds compact colour, and Libra Colour is the all-rounder for page-turn buttons, a larger screen, more storage and optional handwriting. The decisive pre-purchase work is outside the hardware: confirm your local library and audit the rights on the Kindle books you need. If both checks pass, Kobo can serve as a capable primary reader; if they do not, plan on a Kobo-plus-Kindle setup rather than expecting a complete library migration.
