The safest progression in 7 Days to Die is not one perfect mega-base. Use a fortified house or trailer for the first night, improve its support structure from wood through cobblestone and concrete, then build a separate Blood Moon base roughly 50–100 metres away. That separation keeps your storage, crafting stations and accumulated loot away from the fight while letting the horde base focus on funneling, delaying and killing zombies.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted 7 Days to Die servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
For a first horde design, build a compact elevated box with a controlled ramp and a single approach route. As your materials and electrical systems improve, convert the route into a killing corridor, U-turn, tower or drop-shaft layout, and add redundant firing positions rather than relying on one wall.

What version of 7 Days to Die is this guide for?
As of 14 October 2026, community reporting identifies V3.3.0 Stable as the current PC release, with a reported release date of 5 October 2026. The same reporting says V3.3.0 first appeared as an experimental build on 24 September and expanded inventory from 48 slots to a maximum of 96 in an 8×6 grid. Earlier stable releases were reported as V3.2.0 on 26 August, V3.1.0 (Henpocalypse) on 27 July and V3.0 (Dead Hot Summer) on 29 June for Steam, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.
Version labels are inconsistent across community guides: the same mechanics may be described as 1.0, 2.0 or V2.6. Block costs, hit points and even names can change with a patch. Check the Steam News page for app 251570 and your console patch notes before committing rare materials. The exact figures in the table below are fan-guide or wiki reports, not verified developer specifications.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
The larger inventory in V3.3.0 helps with hauling, but it does not remove the need for staging materials. Carry repair blocks, tools and ammunition in separate trips; a death during a construction run can erase more time than the extra inventory saves.
Before the first night: a reliable opening plan
1. Claim a structure you can seal quickly
Search for a house or trailer before darkness. A pre-existing two-storey building can save hundreds of wood blocks compared with a ground-up build, and its floors give you immediate vertical separation. Choose a structure with a manageable number of doors and windows; a complicated interior creates more routes for zombies to exploit.
Place wood frames across every entrance you are not using. Upgrade the frames with a stone axe as soon as you have spare materials. Do not spend the first afternoon decorating or digging a large basement. Your first objective is a sealed shell, a safe sleeping position and enough room to repair the approach.
2. Pick a site that supports the next week
A good long-term location is close to a trader, water and several resource or point-of-interest locations. Keep a clear line of fire around the building. Narrow streets, dense parked vehicles and tight alleys limit visibility and give zombies cover, so use them only when the existing structure is unusually strong.
Mark the location of your eventual horde base before you settle permanently. You want a short, repeatable run from storage to defence, but not a shared blast radius. The two sites should have enough open ground for you to see and repair the route between them.
3. Protect the support chain, not just the outer skin
During the first upgrade pass, reinforce foundations, pillars and any blocks carrying an upper floor. Heavy upgrades added high above a weak support line can trigger structural collapse. A thick roof is worthless if the columns beneath it fail.

4. Establish a small working loop
Keep your bedroll, storage, workbench area and a repair position inside the same protected footprint. Place a ladder or stair route that you can reach while carrying supplies. Leave an alternate exit; a single blocked doorway turns a minor breach into a death trap.
Choosing between a starter base and a horde base
Your storage base answers everyday questions: where to sleep, craft, sort loot and return after a mission. Your horde base answers a different question: how do you force a large group of zombies through a predictable path while you repair and attack from safety?
Community guides commonly recommend separating them by about 50–100 metres. If the horde overwhelms the defensive structure, your chests and crafting stations remain outside the immediate fight. Separation also lets you rebuild the horde base without dismantling the place where you live.
Do not move every possession to the horde site. Keep medical items, spare tools, ammunition and a repair kit there, but leave irreplaceable resources in the storage base. A small emergency chest at the defence site is enough for a failed run.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMaterial upgrades: what to build and when
The commonly described upgrade chain is wood, cobblestone, concrete and steel. One guide calls it a five-step process because placing the initial frame is counted separately; the practical rule is that each block receives the next material in sequence. Upgrade in connected sections so you always know which supports are carrying weight.
| Tier or item | Reported material input | Reported hit points | Best use | Evidence qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wood block | 8 wood | 350 | First-night walls, temporary ramps and scaffolding | Community guide figure; unverified for V3.3.0 |
| Cobblestone block | 10 cobblestone rocks | 500 | Early permanent shell and first horde box | Community guide and fan-wiki figures; unverified |
| Concrete block | 10 concrete mix | 3,500 | Midgame structural walls and firing platforms | Fan-wiki figure; page and current patch not confirmed |
| Steel block | 10 forged steel | 10,000 | Endgame supports, doors and critical choke points | Fan-wiki figure; page and current patch not confirmed |
| Vault door | Not stated | 22,500 | High-value entrance or fallback barrier | Fan-wiki figure; cost and current patch not confirmed |
Wood is fast and inexpensive but should be treated as a stopgap. Cobblestone is a sensible bridge because it is stronger without requiring the full concrete production chain. Concrete’s reported hit-point jump makes it the practical midgame target; steel belongs on supports, doors and other places where a failure would expose you immediately.

How to build a compact starter base
- Clear the interior. Remove loose furniture, weak partitions and any block that prevents a straight view of the entrance. Keep a small room for storage and a separate repair position.
- Seal secondary openings. Cover windows and rear doors with frames, then upgrade them. Leave one controlled entrance that you can watch from above or behind a second barrier.
- Repair the floor and supports. Replace visibly damaged blocks under the room you occupy. Reinforce corners and vertical columns before adding a heavy roof or upper floor.
- Create a controlled approach. Use a short ramp, stair or raised landing so zombies arrive from one direction. Avoid building the approach against a narrow street where you cannot see around corners.
- Add a second defensive layer. A waist-high inner barrier buys repair time if the outer door breaks. Make the inner layer accessible to you but awkward for zombies to cross.
- Reserve a fallback position. Build a small upper room or roof platform with a ladder you can remove or block. Store only emergency supplies there; it is a fighting position, not your main warehouse.
- Test every route in daylight. Walk the same path you expect zombies to use. If you cannot reach the repair point without jumping, crouching through furniture or crossing an exposed roof, redesign it before night.
Digging down and using elevation
A compact walled base can be paired with a shallow underground room. Dig beneath the protected footprint rather than outside the walls, and place ladders so you can move between storage and the surface without exposing yourself. Underground space is useful for important gear, but it is not automatically safe: a broken ladder, unsupported ceiling or unexpected opening can trap you.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Elevation gives you time because zombies must climb before reaching the firing position. Hills, cliffs and water towers can serve as natural starting points. Inspect the surrounding terrain first; a steep drop that protects one side may create a blind side on the other. Build railings and a controlled descent for yourself, then block routes that let zombies climb directly to the top.
Horde base designs that scale with your skills
The Stilt Box: a first Blood Moon design
A fan-wiki recommendation for a first horde base is the Stilt Box: a compact elevated platform using roughly 200 cobblestone blocks, an iron door or hatch and wood frames for a ramp. Treat those figures as a rough community template, not a guaranteed V3.3.0 recipe.
Raise the occupied box high enough that ordinary ground attacks cannot immediately reach the floor. Keep the ramp removable or repairable from inside, and put the hatch or door where you can retreat without crossing the zombie approach. The design works because it concentrates attention on one route while giving you a protected platform for shooting and repairs.
Killing corridor
A killing corridor funnels the horde into a straight, narrow tunnel one or two blocks wide. Concentrate your automated and manual defenses at the end of the corridor, where every target passes through the same firing lane. The corridor must include a repair access point; if you cannot reach damaged blocks safely, the first broken section can become a chain reaction.

Keep the entrance wide enough for your movement but narrow enough to prevent zombies from spreading around the trap line. Test the corridor with ordinary nights before a Blood Moon so you can see whether zombies attack the intended blocks or detour around them.
Tower base
A tower base places your firing and storage positions above ground level. It is useful where terrain is flat and you need a clear field of fire in every direction. Build a broad, supported foundation rather than a single narrow column, and include a protected stair or ladder route that can be repaired from inside.
Towers are vulnerable to support failure. Upgrade the foundation and lower pillars first, and do not add heavy upper levels until the lower chain is complete. A second platform below the main room can act as a repair deck and an escape route.
U-turn path
A U-turn design makes the approach reverse direction before zombies reach you. The turn slows the wave and presents a new firing angle while keeping the main base away from the entrance. Leave enough room at the bend for repairs and avoid dead-end pockets where zombies can stack outside the intended route.
Recommended Free Tools
Drop shaft
A drop shaft sends zombies down a vertical section before they reach the kill position. It can create distance and buy repair time, but the bottom must have a controllable exit or a deliberate reset path. Cover any opening you use to cross the shaft, and keep an alternative route in case the drop becomes blocked.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step-by-step: build your first dedicated horde base
- Mark the site. Choose open ground roughly 50–100 metres from your storage base, with enough space to see approaching zombies and move around the structure.
- Lay a supported footprint. Start with a square or rectangle that can be expanded. Upgrade the foundation and corner supports before building the upper deck.
- Raise the fighting platform. Use wood for temporary scaffolding, then replace or upgrade the permanent supports. Keep the platform large enough for you, a repair position and an emergency retreat.
- Build one approach route. Add a ramp or corridor and remove alternate paths that let zombies reach the supports from the side. Ensure you can enter the base without using the zombie route.
- Install the first barrier. Fit the iron door or hatch at the point where you can defend it from cover. Put a second block layer behind it so a damaged door is not the only thing between you and the horde.
- Add firing and repair ports. Make openings that expose only the intended corridor. Place them where you can reach the surrounding blocks with a repair tool while remaining behind cover.
- Run a daylight path test. Watch how zombies approach, climb and attack. If they ignore the corridor and hit the supports, strengthen the supports and change the route before adding expensive traps.
- Stock a recovery chest. Keep spare blocks, a repair tool, food, water, medical items and ammunition at the horde base. Leave valuable loot at the storage base.
From midgame walls to an endgame fortress
Upgrade in structural order
Convert the foundation, pillars and support chains before upgrading upper walls. Then harden the corridor, doors and firing positions. This order prevents the common mistake of placing heavy blocks on a weak frame and losing both the new material and the structure.
Best Value
Add power in stages
Community progression guides place the major automation steps in this order: generator, spotlights, electric fences and blade traps. A generator supports the electrical network; spotlights improve visibility; electric fences slow or stun targets; blade traps provide concentrated damage. Introduce one system at a time so a failure is easy to diagnose.
Protect cables, generators and control points behind repairable blocks, but leave access panels. An inaccessible generator is a liability when the Blood Moon starts. Keep manual weapons and a fallback firing lane even after traps are installed.
Build redundancy, not just thickness
An endgame concrete or steel fortress should have multiple levels, redundant lines and clear fields of fire. Redundancy means a second route, a second firing position and a way to retreat if the primary corridor collapses. Extra thickness without an alternate route can still leave you trapped.
Blood Moon preparation and testing
- Pathing test: observe ordinary zombies and confirm they choose the intended ramp, corridor, turn or shaft.
- Repair access: stand at every critical block and verify that you can repair it without stepping into the attack lane.
- Support inspection: check foundations, pillars and the blocks under traps for damage before the event.
- Power check: confirm the generator, switches, cables and traps are reachable and supplied.
- Ammunition and tools: carry enough for manual defence and bring spare repair materials rather than relying only on automation.
- Escape route: identify a second exit and keep it free of storage, furniture and loose frames.
- Storage separation: leave high-value loot at the storage base and take only the supplies needed for the fight.
Troubleshooting common failures
Zombies attack the wall instead of the corridor
They have found a shorter or less obstructed route. Remove alternate stairs and low obstacles, close side openings and make the intended path the easiest walkable route. Re-test before adding more traps.
The platform collapses after an upgrade
Heavy blocks were added above an under-supported span. Rebuild the foundation and vertical supports first, then upgrade connected sections in order. Do not replace only the visible top block.
The entrance breaks before you can repair it
Add a second barrier, move the repair position behind cover and shorten the exposed approach. A narrow corridor is useful only when you can reach its damaged blocks safely.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →You are trapped inside the base
Provide an independent escape route, keep its ladder or stairs clear and place a hatch or door you can open from inside. Store emergency tools at both the storage and horde bases.
Traps stop working during the fight
Check the generator and control points, then fall back to manual weapons and the secondary firing lane. Keep electrical components accessible for repairs and avoid putting every defensive system on one power path.
Which design should you choose?
| Your situation | Best starting design | Why |
|---|---|---|
| First night, little material | Fortified house or trailer | Fastest protection and minimal construction |
| Early Blood Moon, limited resources | Stilt Box | Compact elevated defence with a single approach |
| Predictable pathing and manual weapons | Killing corridor | Concentrates targets in a one- to two-block-wide lane |
| Flat terrain and need for visibility | Tower base | Elevation and broad lines of fire |
| Need to delay and redirect waves | U-turn or drop shaft | Adds distance and creates additional firing angles |
| Late game with electrical systems | Concrete or steel multi-level fortress | Supports redundant lines, traps and fallback positions |
Bottom line: build for control, then for strength
Start with a structure you can seal before night, reinforce its supports and use wood only as a temporary tier. Move to cobblestone, concrete and finally steel as production allows. Keep your everyday storage separate from the Blood Moon defence, force zombies through one tested route, and preserve a repairable escape path. The strongest base is the one whose pathing, supports, power and fallback positions you have tested before the horde arrives.
