A ROM hack can alter a game’s maps, text, events, enemies, objects, music and progression while retaining the underlying game engine. That is why the project can be recognizable as Ocarina of Time and still advertise a different adventure. It also explains why owning or accessing an official copy of Ocarina of Time does not automatically provide Sands of Time. The hack is a separate community-made modification.
What is known about version 1.22
Jesús Bosque’s Softonic report, dated August 29, 2026, identifies version 1.22. That is the clearest version number in the available coverage, but it is still a secondary report. No primary author release page is established here to confirm whether 1.22 is the latest build, what changed between versions, or whether the number applies to every distribution of the project.
Readers should therefore quote the number precisely: “Softonic reported version 1.22 on August 29, 2026,” rather than presenting 1.22 as a permanently verified current version. Fan projects can receive silent revisions, mirrors can carry different files, and a listing date is not the same thing as a developer-maintained release log.
How the stories differ
Ocarina of Time: the established Nintendo adventure
Ocarina of Time is the official Zelda game Nintendo released for Nintendo 64. Because the available descriptions are summaries rather than an official script or timeline document, details such as the exact chronology, the identity of every character and the project’s intended relationship to Zelda canon should not be stated as settled Nintendo lore. Calling it an alternate-timeline premise is accurate; calling it official canon is not.
What content the hack adds
New areas and a different world to explore
Reports identify new areas, including a location called Steel Town. The significance is larger than a renamed room or cosmetic change: a new area can alter the route through the adventure, introduce different environmental puzzles and provide space for story events that do not exist in the original game.
The sources do not provide a complete map, an area-by-area route or a definitive count of locations. Steel Town is therefore a confirmed example from coverage, not evidence that it is the only new region. A guide that claims a precise total without a primary map would be going beyond what has been established.
Original dungeons

Kotaku’s listing summarizes new worlds, power-ups and enemies, while Softonic reports new bosses and items. Together, those descriptions indicate changes at several layers of play: the spaces the player visits, the threats encountered there and the tools used to overcome them.
New bosses can change the rhythm of a dungeon and require strategies that are not part of the Nintendo campaign. New enemies can alter how rooms are approached, especially if their placement is designed around the hack’s own equipment. Power-ups and items can also reshape progression by opening routes or solving puzzles in a different sequence.

The available coverage does not give reliable specifications for each item, power-up or enemy. It does not establish damage values, inventory capacity, drop rates, boss health, difficulty rankings or a complete equipment list. Avoid treating an unsourced fan description as a technical manual.

Music and audio identity
Softonic reports a soundtrack for the hack. New music helps distinguish a community conversion from a simple text edit because it can give new areas and events their own atmosphere. It also signals that the project is attempting to establish an identity separate from the original game.
No dependable track list, composer credit or distribution license is established in the available material. The safe comparison is therefore about scope—coverage reports music made for the hack—not about assigning authorship or listing songs that have not been verified.
Quality-of-life changes
Kotaku’s listing also mentions quality-of-life changes. That phrase generally refers to adjustments intended to reduce friction, such as clearer feedback or less repetitive navigation, but the listing does not provide a sufficiently detailed feature-by-feature specification in the available evidence. A changed room is noticeable because the player remembers how the original space worked. A new item matters because it may challenge assumptions about the old progression. The hack’s appeal is consequently strongest for people who want a substantial reinterpretation rather than a first introduction to the series.
Not a conventional sequel
A conventional sequel is usually a separately produced game with its own release identity, even when it continues a previous story. Sands of Time is instead described as a ROM hack built on Ocarina of Time. It can tell a new story and add large amounts of content, but that production method makes it an unofficial modification rather than an official sequel in Nintendo’s catalog.

The reported alternate-timeline premise reinforces that distinction. It is a “what if?” interpretation of the world, not a Nintendo-announced continuation that should be placed between official games.
Presentation and polish expectations
Secondary coverage presents the hack as a fan project and notes presentation limitations. That wording is important because community projects can vary in polish across maps, text, audio, interfaces and difficulty. The existence of ambitious additions does not guarantee the consistency, quality assurance or accessibility standards of a commercial Nintendo release.

Where Ocarina of Time fits
Nintendo UK identifies the original Nintendo 64 game and lists Ocarina of Time 3D as available for the Nintendo 3DS family. Nintendo Japan also maintains an official page for Ocarina of Time 3D. Those pages document Nintendo’s own releases and are the appropriate references when the question is which version is official.
The 3DS edition is an official adaptation, not the fan hack. Buying, borrowing or playing an official edition does not mean that the modified campaign is included. The two should be described as separate products with different status.
What availability means for Sands of Time
The reviewed sources identify Sands of Time as a ROM hack, not a Nintendo retail release. They do not establish an official Nintendo store listing, a cartridge release, a supported console product or a Nintendo distribution agreement. Technical and legal questions to settle before attempting a ROM hack
Base-ROM requirements are not confirmed here
ROM hacks commonly depend on a particular revision or regional version of the original game, but the available material does not identify which Ocarina of Time dump, region or revision Sands of Time requires. Do not assume that an American, European or Japanese file—or a Nintendo 3DS edition—will work interchangeably.
