Match the intermediary category to the service being offered, read the underlying order rather than a search-result headline, and check later appeals, stays or court developments before treating an old order as currently operative.
What you are actually trying to verify
“Is this company SEBI registered?” is not a yes-or-no question until you identify what the company does. SEBI does not give every company one universal registration. It maintains records for different intermediary categories, such as investment advisers, research analysts, stock brokers and other regulated participants. A firm may be registered for one activity but not authorised to provide a different service.

Start by writing down the service being advertised: investment advice, research reports, broking, portfolio management, mutual-fund distribution or something else. Then record the exact legal name, any trade name, the registration number shown in the advertisement or agreement, the website and contact details, and the entity that will receive your money. These details let you distinguish a genuine match from a business using a similar name.

As of October 12, 2026, SEBI’s directory displayed 4,998 registered stock brokers in the equity segment. That is a dated count for one category, not a count of unique firms across all categories and not evidence that any particular broker is legitimate or free of enforcement action.

Step 1: Identify the legal entity and claimed activity
Capture every name the business uses
- Legal name: the name on the contract, invoice, bank account or corporate disclosure.
- Trade name: the public-facing brand, app name or website name.
- Registration number: copy it exactly, including letters, punctuation and leading zeroes.
- Regulated service: note the precise promise made to you, such as personalised advice or execution of trades.
- Related entities: record subsidiaries, partnership names and the name of any intermediary actually handling your account.
A promoter may advertise under a short brand while the registered entity has a different spelling or corporate suffix. Search both, but do not treat a similar spelling as proof of identity. Compare addresses, directors or other particulars shown in the official record with the information supplied to you.
Separate regulated and unregulated claims
Marketing language can blur the difference between education, general commentary and personalised financial advice. The relevant question is whether the activity being sold requires a particular SEBI registration. If the business claims to be a broker, adviser or another intermediary, select that category in the official directory. A registration in an unrelated category does not authorise every service listed on a website.
Step 2: Search SEBI’s Recognised Intermediaries directory
SEBI’s Recognised Intermediaries page provides searches by member name or trade name and by registration number, and lists the available intermediary categories. Use the regulator’s live directory rather than a badge, screenshot or PDF supplied by the company.
- Open the Recognised Intermediaries directory. Choose the intermediary category that corresponds to the service being offered.
- Search the exact legal name. Copy the spelling from the contract or corporate document. Remove obvious extra spaces, then try the name with and without a corporate suffix if the interface requires it.
- Search the trade name and known variants. A result under a brand name should still be checked against the legal entity and registration number.
- Search the registration number separately. A number supplied by a salesperson should return the same entity and category as the name search.
- Open the full result. Record the listed name, trade name, category, registration number, address and other particulars. Save the page or note the date of the search because directory records can change.
- Compare the result with the business contacting you. Check the legal name on the agreement, the bank-account beneficiary, office address, email domain and stated service. Any unexplained mismatch is a reason to stop and seek clarification before paying.
What a directory match establishes
A matching entry establishes that an entity appears in a SEBI registration category with the particulars shown on the directory at the time you checked. It does not establish a clean disciplinary record, current financial soundness or permission to perform activities outside that category. Keep the registration check separate from the enforcement check.
What a missing result means
No result is a warning to investigate, not automatic proof of fraud. Recheck the legal name, trade-name variants, registration number and category. Confirm that the business is actually claiming to provide a regulated intermediary service; a company that is not itself an intermediary may not appear in this directory. If the firm insists that it is registered but cannot reconcile its details with the official record, do not transfer money until the discrepancy is resolved through an independently verified contact channel.

Step 3: Search SEBI Enforcement Orders
Registration and enforcement are different records. SEBI’s Enforcement Orders interface supports searches by title, keyword and entity name. Search the exact legal name first, then reasonable variants, former names and trade names that appear in company documents.
- Enter the entity name in the entity-name field. Try the full legal name, then distinctive words from the name. Repeat the search for known former names or spelling variants.
- Review the result list for identity clues. Note the party named, order date, proceeding type and any connected individuals or entities. A similar name may belong to a different business.
- Open every potentially relevant order. Do not rely on a search snippet, a news headline or a category label. Download or read the actual document.
- Extract the operative facts. Record the date, named party, conduct alleged or established, findings, directions, monetary penalty, restrictions and compliance deadline.
- Check for later records. Search the entity again for appellate, settlement or court documents and look for later orders that modify, stay, confirm or replace the earlier outcome.
Order types are not interchangeable
| Record type | What it can show | How to describe it accurately |
|---|---|---|
| Adjudicating-officer order | A decision in an adjudication proceeding, often concerning a monetary penalty or statutory contravention. | State that an adjudicating officer issued an order and quote the actual penalty or direction; do not call it a criminal conviction. |
| Chairperson or Member order | Directions or findings issued by SEBI’s decision-making authority in the proceeding identified in the document. | Use the order’s date, party and operative directions. Distinguish interim directions from final relief. |
| Settlement order | A matter resolved through SEBI’s settlement process on the terms recorded in the order. | Call it a settlement and state the terms. Do not rewrite a settlement as an admission or as a finding after a contested hearing unless the document says so. |
| SAT order | An appellate decision of the Securities Appellate Tribunal concerning an earlier SEBI action. | Explain what was appealed and whether the tribunal upheld, modified, remanded or set aside the earlier action. |
| Court order | A judicial order connected with the matter, which may affect enforcement or procedure. | Identify the court, date and relief granted. Check whether it is a stay, final judgment or another procedural order. |
The Enforcement index groups these records together for searching, but their legal and procedural meanings differ. Saying only that “SEBI has a case” hides whether the item is a notice, an interim direction, a settled proceeding, an adjudication, an appeal or a court development.

Read the order, not just the title
Titles can be abbreviated and search results can omit important qualifiers. In the document, locate the sections describing jurisdiction, allegations, submissions, findings and the final operative paragraph. Note whether the conduct was alleged, admitted, established on the record, settled without admission or left undecided. Capture the exact remedy: penalty amount, disgorgement, debarment period, directions to refund or any other restriction.
Keep the order date attached to every statement. An order from several years ago may not describe the company’s present status. A later SAT or court record can change what remains enforceable, and a subsequent SEBI order can impose additional or different directions.
Step 4: Confirm the current procedural status
SEBI’s search result is a historical record, not a guarantee that the listed direction is still operating unchanged. After finding an order:

- [Easy Disassemble] Making incidental repairs quick and easy! Very nice, flexible cable
- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
- Search the entity name again for later SEBI orders.
- Look for a SAT appeal and read the appellate result, not merely the fact that an appeal was filed.
- Check for a court stay, modification, final judgment or other later order.
- Use the latest document date when describing the status, while preserving the original order’s date and type.
- If the record is ambiguous, describe the uncertainty precisely rather than claiming that the matter is resolved.
For example, “SEBI issued an adjudicating-officer order dated 10 May 2022 imposing a penalty” is precise. “SEBI found the company guilty” may be inaccurate if the document was a settlement, an interim order or an order later stayed or set aside.
Step 5: Use SCORES for complaint context, not as a clean-record certificate
SEBI describes SCORES as “an online grievance redressal facilitation platform provided by SEBI.” It is intended to facilitate grievances involving listed companies, SEBI-registered intermediaries and market infrastructure institutions. Its guidance asks investors to approach the company or intermediary first.
SCORES can help you identify an entity and understand the existence or handling of complaints within the platform’s scope. It is not the authoritative registration register and it is not a complete disciplinary-history database. A complaint is an investor’s grievance, not by itself a regulatory finding that wrongdoing occurred. Conversely, no complaint entry does not prove that the entity has never faced enforcement action.
Understand the entity-status limitation
The SCORES entity-status page says its data is collected from stock exchanges or the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, warns that inaccuracies may occur and marks non-authenticated companies with an asterisk. Use those records as a supplementary identity check. Verify the registration itself in the Recognised Intermediaries directory and verify enforcement in the Enforcement Orders records.
Know the old and new SCORES systems
The current SCORES portal states that the old site stopped accepting new complaints on March 28, 2024. Some complaints that were pending on that date remain viewable in the old system. Therefore, a search that spans both interfaces may be necessary when you are tracing an older grievance. The SCORES FAQ also says the platform cannot consider, among other things, anonymous complaints, incomplete or unspecified complaints and unsupported allegations. Those limits make the database unsuitable as an exhaustive count of every investor dispute.

Registration, enforcement and complaints: keep the records separate
| Record | Question it helps answer | What it cannot establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Recognised Intermediaries directory | Does this named intermediary appear in a SEBI category, and what identity and registration details are listed? | That the firm has a clean enforcement history or may perform every activity in its marketing. |
| Enforcement Orders search | Has SEBI published an order involving this entity, and what does that particular document say? | The order’s present status without checking later appeals, stays, reversals or subsequent orders. |
| SCORES entity and complaint resources | Is the entity identifiable within the grievance platform, and what complaints are recorded within its scope? | A complete registration record or proof that a complaint allegation is true. |
A practical verification worksheet
Use one row per entity or intermediary and retain the evidence you relied on:
- Claimed service: write the regulated activity in the company’s own words.
- Legal and trade names: include every spelling variant searched.
- Registration result: category, number, listed address and date checked.
- Identity match: explain whether the contract, payment beneficiary and website match the directory entry.
- Enforcement results: order date, order type, named party and operative outcome.
- Later status: note any SAT appeal, court proceeding, stay, settlement or later SEBI order.
- SCORES context: record only what the platform shows and its authentication or accuracy warning.
- Unresolved issues: list any name mismatch, missing category, unverifiable number or unexplained procedural gap.
Save the date of each search. Official directories and result lists are live systems; a later reader may not see exactly the same entry or count.
Common mistakes that produce false reassurance
Checking only a logo or certificate
A SEBI logo, certificate image or registration number in a presentation is not independent verification. Enter the details yourself in the regulator’s directory and compare the full identity.
Searching only the brand name
Brand names are often different from legal names. Search the contracting entity and the beneficiary of payment, then test the brand as a variant. If two entities appear, determine which one is actually providing the service.

Assuming one category covers every service
A broker registration does not, on its own, prove that the same business is registered for personalised investment advice or another separate activity. Match category to service.
Best Value
Treating a complaint as a proven violation
SCORES records a facilitation process. It does not turn every allegation into a finding. Report the complaint as a complaint and reserve conclusions about misconduct for the relevant final order.
Treating a settlement as an adjudicated finding
Settlement orders have their own procedural posture. Read the terms and any admission or non-admission language before characterising the outcome.
Ignoring appeals and stays
An old SEBI order may have been appealed or affected by a later court order. Search the later record before describing the original direction as currently operative.
Reading “no result” as “no history”
Name variants, former names and separate entities can hide a relevant record. A clean search result is limited evidence, not a guarantee that no proceeding exists.
How to report your finding responsibly
A useful verification note identifies the source, date and scope of each conclusion. For registration, state the category and listed identity: “The entity appears in SEBI’s Recognised Intermediaries directory as a [category] under registration number [number], checked on [date].” For enforcement, name the exact order type and result: “SEBI published a [type] dated [date] involving [party]; the operative paragraph says [direction or penalty].” If a later appeal or stay changes the position, state that next to the original order.
For an absent result, write what you actually checked: legal name, trade name, number and category. Explain that the search did not produce a match and that this is not, by itself, a finding of fraud or proof of a clean record. For SCORES, identify the complaint context and retain the platform’s limitations instead of presenting it as a regulator’s merits decision.
When to stop and seek clarification
Pause before sending money or signing if the legal entity cannot be matched, the registration number belongs to another category, the payment account is in an unrelated name, or the firm refuses to explain a mismatch. Ask for the exact registered entity and service category, then verify those details independently. If the response remains inconsistent, treat the unresolved identity as a material risk rather than relying on testimonials, urgency or a polished website.

These checks can establish whether a named intermediary appears in a SEBI registration category, what published orders involve that entity and what complaints are visible within SCORES’ limited scope. They cannot guarantee investment performance, solvency, honesty, suitability or the absence of undisclosed activity. They also cannot answer a company-specific question without the company’s exact legal identity and a current search of the live records.
