Treat the first crash after an engine change as a regression-isolation problem, not immediate proof that your graphics card has failed. Reproduce the failure once, preserve the original crash report and logs, and record the game and engine build, renderer, GPU, driver version and date, Windows build, and the exact point of failure. Then change one variable at a time: driver state, shader caches, graphics API, overlays or overclocks, and newly enabled features.
A DirectX 12 crash can come from the game’s new rendering path, a driver interaction, stale shader data, or a specific asset. A stable DirectX 11 run is useful evidence, but it is an isolation result rather than a final diagnosis.

Why an engine change can make a previously stable game crash
An engine update can alter the renderer, shader compiler, resource lifetime, lighting or ray-tracing features, memory use, and the order in which assets are loaded. Even if your save files and hardware are unchanged, the new build may exercise a different Direct3D path. The first crash after that change is therefore a timing clue: the new build, its driver interaction, or data generated for it deserves investigation before you replace hardware.

- Renderer/API path: a DirectX 12 (DX12) code path, feature combination, or synchronization change can fail while DirectX 11 (DX11) continues to work.
- Driver interaction: the new engine may expose a driver defect or a driver state that the older build never reached.
- Shader data: old or corrupted compiled shaders can conflict with the new engine, while the first clean run may compile a large number of shaders.
- Game or asset regression: one scene, save, material, or streaming asset may trigger the fault even though other content loads normally.
These are hypotheses, not diagnoses. The workflow below is designed to separate them without destroying the evidence needed by the developer.
Capture evidence before you modify the installation
Reproduce once and note the failure stage
Start with one controlled reproduction. Use the same save or scene, follow the same route, and stop after the crash report has been generated. Write down whether the failure occurs at launch, while compiling shaders, when entering a particular scene, when loading a save, or after a repeatable action such as enabling a graphics feature. Do not begin by deleting caches, reinstalling the game, or repeatedly forcing crashes; those actions can remove the files that identify the original fault.
Record the environment
| Item | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Game and engine | Game build, engine version, and the date or build number of the change | Support staff need to distinguish an engine regression from a later hotfix or content change. |
| Renderer | DX12, DX11, or another API selected in the game | It establishes which graphics path was active when the crash occurred. |
| Graphics hardware | Exact GPU model | Driver behavior and supported features vary by model. |
| Driver | Driver version and release date | Unreal’s GPU-crash guidance specifically uses this metadata when examining a failure. |
| Operating system | Windows build | Graphics components and timeout behavior can differ between Windows builds. |
| Content | Save, level, asset, or menu where the crash repeats | A single repeatable asset points to a different investigation than a crash in every scene. |
| Symptoms | On-screen error, black screen, freeze, forced close, or reboot | The visible symptom helps match the correct log signature. |
Save the original reports and logs
Unreal Engine creates a crash report when a game crashes and can send it through the Crash Report Client. Keep the complete report, not just a screenshot of its first line. Preserve the project logs as well; Unreal projects commonly expose them under Saved/Logs. Copy the files to a separate folder before trying any cleanup.
Unity’s log-file reference documents crash files under %TMP%CompanyNameProductNameCrashes on Windows. Copy the entire crash directory and the relevant player or editor log before clearing Unity’s cache directories. A timestamped folder containing the original files makes later comparisons reliable.

Classify the crash signature
Open the first fatal section of the report and search for the terms below. A signature narrows the next test; it does not prove that the component named in the message is defective.
| Signature or wording | What it suggests | First controlled test |
|---|---|---|
D3D12, DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED, or DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG |
The Direct3D 12 device or its driver path stopped responding. | Capture the report, then test the driver state, shader caches, and a DX11 fallback one at a time. |
| “GPU crashed,” timeout, or TDR language | The engine detected a graphics-device failure or a timeout while GPU work was in flight. | Use the engine’s GPU-crash information, note the driver metadata, and compare DX12 with DX11. |
| Shader compiler failure | Compilation, shader data, or a feature introduced by the new build may be involved. | Clear the relevant caches after preserving evidence, reboot, and reproduce the same scene. |
| Access violation without a graphics signature | The fault may be in game code, an asset, a plug-in, or another subsystem. | Check whether one save or asset always triggers it and include the full call stack in the report. |
| The same asset, level, or save appears every time | A content-specific regression is more likely than a system-wide graphics failure. | Reproduce with a new save or a different scene, without changing several settings at once. |
Use call stacks and GPU breadcrumbs
Do not stop at the last line printed on screen. Unreal’s GPU-crash documentation explains that logs can expose the driver version and date, call-stack information, and GPU breadcrumbs. The first fatal line, the complete call stack, and any breadcrumb or marker around the failing pass are substantially more useful to a developer than a generic statement that the game “crashed.”
Check the graphics driver without losing a known-good state
Unity identifies both driver crashes and corrupted driver shader caches as possible causes of D3D12 failures. If the crash began immediately after a driver update, test the last version that was stable with this game. If the driver has not changed, install a current, known-good driver supplied for your GPU, then record the exact version and date.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Copy the crash report, logs, and your environment notes to a safe folder.
- Choose one driver change: update to a known-good current release, or roll back to the last stable release if the timing points to a recent update.
- Reboot when the driver installer or Windows requests it.
- Run the same save or scene with the same renderer and graphics settings.
- Record whether the crash occurs, whether the failure stage changes, and the driver version used for that run.
Do not call a driver change a fix if the test also changed the API, deleted caches, disabled features, or installed a game patch. Those are separate variables.

Clear shader caches deliberately
Shader caches are useful performance data, but stale or corrupted entries can become invalid after an engine or driver change. Clear them only after the original files are safe. Unity documents the project cache at Library/ShaderCache and discusses common vendor and DirectX cache locations. The exact vendor folder differs by driver and Windows installation, so remove only the cache associated with the affected title or graphics stack rather than deleting unrelated application data.
- Close the game, launcher, editor, and any process that could still be writing shader files.
- Preserve the crash report and logs first.
- Delete or rename the engine shader cache, such as the affected Unity project’s
Library/ShaderCache, and the relevant vendor or DirectX shader cache documented for your system. - Reboot to release files that were still open.
- Launch the same renderer, load the same scene or save, and wait for shader compilation to finish.
- Record both the crash result and whether the first run has compilation stutter.
Epic’s support guidance notes that repeated DirectX shader compilation can cause stutter and that clearing the shader cache can help. A brief period of compilation after a clean cache is expected; it is not, by itself, evidence that the cache operation failed. If the crash returns after the cache is rebuilt, retain the new logs because they show whether the same shader or pass is involved.
Compare DX12 and DX11 as an isolation test
If the title supports both APIs, run an otherwise identical test in DX11 when DX12 crashes. Use the game’s documented graphics-API selector or launcher option; labels differ by title, so do not assume that a command intended for one game works in another. Record the API in every test result.

| Comparison | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| DX12 crashes, DX11 completes the same scene | The failure is likely tied to the DX12 path, shader compilation, a driver interaction, or a DX12-only feature combination. This does not prove the GPU is defective. |
| Both APIs crash at the same asset or stage | A game or content regression becomes more plausible than an API-specific fault. |
| Both APIs crash in unrelated games or scenes | Broaden the investigation beyond this engine change; component-specific diagnosis is needed before replacing hardware. |
| DX11 also fails, but only after changing several settings | Repeat the comparison with one variable restored at a time; the result is not interpretable until the test conditions match. |
Epic’s Unreal guidance and Unity’s D3D12 documentation both recommend a DX11 fallback when investigating a DX12 crash. Use the result to choose the next test, not as a permanent verdict. DX11 may avoid a failing path while leaving the underlying regression unresolved.

Reduce variables in a controlled order
Once driver, cache, and API results are documented, remove external variables temporarily. Disable overlays, frame injectors, mods, and overclocks for the test. If the engine change enabled ray tracing or another advanced shader feature, turn that feature off only as an isolation step. Keep the same resolution, save, and scene for each run unless the test specifically compares content.
Use one-change-per-run discipline
| Run | Only change this variable | Keep fixed | Record |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baseline | Nothing; reproduce the original failure | Original driver, cache, API, features, save | Crash signature and exact stage |
| Driver | Known-good current driver or last stable rollback | Original cache, API, features, save | Driver version/date and result |
| Cache | Engine and relevant graphics caches cleared | Chosen driver, API, features, save | Compilation behavior and result |
| Renderer | DX12 to DX11, or back to DX12 for confirmation | Chosen driver, cache state, features, save | Whether the same scene completes |
| Feature load | Ray tracing or newly enabled advanced shader option off | Chosen driver, cache, API, save | Feature-specific change in the signature |
| External software | Overlays, injectors, mods, and overclocks disabled | All other settings from the baseline | Whether the crash remains reproducible |
After a clean run, restore settings one at a time. If the crash returns when one option is restored, repeat that test to confirm the association and report the exact option, API, and build rather than describing the result as a general hardware failure.
Follow the engine-specific evidence paths
Unreal Engine
Use the Unreal Crash Reporter output and the project’s Saved/Logs files. Unreal’s crash-reporting documentation identifies the crash report and call stack as core evidence, while its GPU-crash guidance highlights driver metadata and GPU breadcrumbs. Include the engine version, renderer, GPU, driver version and date, Windows build, and the repeatable scene or save. If the report identifies a GPU pass or breadcrumb, quote that exact text in your escalation instead of paraphrasing it.
Unity
For a Windows player or editor crash, copy the files from %TMP%CompanyNameProductNameCrashes and the corresponding player or editor log. Unity’s current 7.0 documentation describes a GPU crash as one that can close the Editor unexpectedly and return a graphics error. Its D3D12 troubleshooting guidance also covers driver state, corrupted shader caches, and using a fallback graphics API. Keep the original D3D12 report even if DX11 allows the scene to load; the contrast between the two runs is valuable evidence.
Best Value
Decide whether the evidence points to software or hardware
A crash that appears only after the engine change, only in one title, or only in DX12 is stronger evidence of a software-path regression than of a dead GPU. A repeatable failure across unrelated content and APIs requires broader, component-specific diagnostics, but this workflow cannot identify a failed part by itself. Avoid buying a GPU, power supply, memory kit, cooling product, or repair utility merely because a log says “GPU crashed.”
Hardware replacement becomes a reasonable consideration only after the evidence isolates a component and the failure remains reproducible under a controlled configuration. Until then, keep the known-good driver, cache state, API, and settings documented so that another test can be compared fairly.
Prepare an escalation report a developer can use
Send the complete files through the game’s supported reporting channel and summarize the controlled tests in a short, reproducible format:
First fatal line: [copy exactly from the report]
Game build / engine version: [exact values]
Windows build: [exact value]
Renderer: DX12 or DX11
GPU: [exact model]
Driver: [version and release date]
Reproduction: [numbered steps, save or scene name]
Failure stage: [launch, shader compile, scene load, asset, or other]
Cache test: [before and after clearing; result]
Driver test: [version tested; result]
DX11/DX12 comparison: [result for each API]
Overlays, mods, injectors, overclocks: [enabled or disabled]
Attached: complete crash report, call stack, logs, and breadcrumbs if present
Attach the unedited crash report and logs, then add your notes as a separate text file. This preserves the original formatting and lets support staff search for the same signature in other reports.
Common mistakes that make diagnosis harder
- Deleting evidence first: cache cleanup or a reinstall can remove the original report. Copy files before changing anything.
- Changing several variables together: a driver update, DX11 switch, cache deletion, and feature change in one attempt cannot identify the cause.
- Assuming “device removed” means a dead GPU: the message identifies a failed graphics-device operation, not its ultimate cause.
- Treating DX11 as a cure: a stable fallback isolates the DX12 path; it does not repair the changed build.
- Reporting only a screenshot: developers need the first fatal line, complete call stack, build information, driver metadata, reproduction steps, and full logs.
- Reintroducing every setting at once: restore overlays, overclocks, mods, and advanced features individually so the returning failure has a clear trigger.
What a useful conclusion looks like
The most valuable result is not simply “the game works” or “the game still crashes.” It is a reproducible statement such as: the new build crashes in DX12 while compiling a named scene, the same scene completes in DX11, clearing the engine and DirectX caches changes the first-run behavior but not the crash, and the failure remains on two recorded driver versions. That conclusion points the developer toward a renderer or shader-path regression while avoiding an unsupported claim about hardware.
Preserve that evidence, keep every run comparable, and escalate with the exact logs and versions. Engine-change crashes become tractable when each test answers one question.
