A screenshot shows what that browser and its operating environment rendered—not necessarily what your own browser displays.
Why is my font missing in the screenshot?
Start by identifying where the screenshot was rendered. Record the screenshot product or automation library, browser engine and version if available, operating system or container, and whether the browser is local or hosted. Then compare the screenshot with the page rendered in that same environment. If the page looks right on your computer but not in a hosted screenshot, font availability or another environment difference is a leading possibility.

Browser output can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Playwright recommends generating visual comparisons in the same environment as the baseline because those differences can affect rendering, including fonts: Playwright visual comparisons.
Managed browsers may not have every font installed. Cloudflare says Browser Run renders text using fonts available in its managed Chromium environment and falls back to a similar supported font if a requested font is absent. How do I check which font the page actually uses?
- Inspect the affected element. In the rendering browser’s developer tools, check its computed
font-family,font-weight, andfont-style. If the service does not expose browser tools, use its logs or reproduce the page in an equivalent browser when possible. - Inspect the font stylesheet and font-file request. Check the family spelling and
@font-facedescriptors, the font URL or path, the response status, and whether the supplied file contains the requested weight and style. A successful stylesheet request alone does not prove the browser received the right font file. - Check the renderer’s font support. If the screenshot service documents its browser environment or available fonts, confirm that the requested family is available. If it does not expose that information, do not assume it has the same fonts as your local machine.
- Verify the rendered result. A similar fallback can be difficult to spot by eye. Compare the computed family and font request status where possible instead of diagnosing from appearance alone.
Google’s documentation explains that a browser first receives a stylesheet and then requests a suitable font file; the stylesheet served by Google Fonts can be tailored to the requesting user agent. Loading behavior also varies: Google describes blank text while a font loads in Chrome and Safari, and a flash of unstyled text in Firefox. See Google Fonts technical considerations.
How do I make Playwright wait for fonts?
First wait for the page state you need—for example, the content that contains the text being captured. Immediately before taking the screenshot, evaluate document.fonts.ready if your Playwright setup permits page JavaScript evaluation:

Check the face state and computed style if the exact typeface matters.

Do not substitute an arbitrary network-idle wait for a font-specific check. Playwright labels its networkidle option discouraged for testing and recommends relying on web assertions for readiness instead: Playwright Page API. Wait for meaningful content, check font state, then capture.
How do I add a custom font to a screenshot renderer?
If the managed browser lacks the font, provide it to the renderer before capture—but only if that product supports custom CSS or font injection. The injected @font-face rule must point to a font file the renderer can access and declare the family, weight, and style the page uses.
Cloudflare Browser Run documents adding an @font-face rule with page.addStyleTag and loading the font from a CDN URL or Base64-encoded data. Playwright’s page.addStyleTag supports CSS content or a stylesheet URL. The exact API and permissions vary by service; check that product’s documentation rather than assuming it exposes browser scripting.

Why does my website look different in the AI screenshot?
Compare the local browser, AI screenshot product, and any hosted browser API against the same six points. The AI service’s internal rendering stack may not be public, so treat unknown details as unknown rather than assuming it behaves like Playwright or Cloudflare Browser Run.

What if waiting for fonts hangs?
A hang may be specific to a browser and toolchain rather than a general font problem. An open Playwright issue reports a Linux WebKit screenshot timeout with Playwright 1.63.0: the font set remained in loading despite an errored Avenir Next face. The reporter’s Playwright 1.60.0 control completed, but the report says the cause and first affected version were not isolated. This is an incident report, not evidence that Playwright or web fonts generally behave this way: Playwright issue 39338.
- Record the browser engine, automation-library version, OS or container image, font-face statuses, and font-loading errors.
- Reduce the problem to a minimal page and capture case.
- Compare versions only in a controlled environment so other variables do not change at the same time.
- Do not treat skipping the font wait as a font fix. It may let capture proceed without proving the desired face loaded.
