How to Take Consistent Screenshots of a Page with Web Fonts Loaded

Wait for the target content, then await document.fonts.ready before capturing. For a required typeface, explicitly request the matching face and verify it succeeded.

For reliable screenshots, wait until the page has reached the state you want to capture, then wait for its fonts to finish loading. In Playwright, use document.fonts.ready; if a specific typeface, weight, style, or character set is essential, request it with document.fonts.load() first. Readiness alone does not prove the intended font succeeded, so check the matching font face when that distinction matters.

Wait for the page state before capturing

A browser’s load event is useful, but it is not an explicit check that the web font used by your target text is ready. First wait for the actual component or content that belongs in the image. If the target content is lazy-loaded or appears after an interaction, trigger it and let it render before checking fonts; it may introduce font use that was not needed earlier.

Then await document.fonts.ready in the page context. The CSS Font Loading API resolves this promise after the document’s currently required fonts and related layout work have settled. It is a readiness check, not proof that a preferred custom font loaded successfully: the browser may render fallback text if a face fails.

Capture a page with Playwright

This example waits for the main content, checks the document’s current font readiness, and saves a full-page screenshot. Replace the URL and content locator with the page and state you need.

await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'load' });

// Wait for the content that should appear in the screenshot.
await page.getByRole('main').waitFor({ state: 'visible' });

// Wait for required fonts and related layout work to settle.
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);

await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });

Playwright documents page.screenshot() for capturing a page, including full-page screenshots. Its networkidle navigation state is discouraged for tests; it is not a font-specific readiness guarantee. Prefer a meaningful content assertion and the font readiness check your capture depends on. See Playwright’s Page API and the CSS Font Loading API.

Require a particular web font

When the screenshot must use a named face, style, weight, or character subset, call document.fonts.load() with a CSS font shorthand that matches the rendered text and provide representative characters. Await document.fonts.ready afterward, then capture.

Replace the sample family, weight, size, and text with the values relevant to your page. If a particular face is a requirement, inspect matching FontFace.status values or the font resource request as well: a failed face can leave fallback text visible. The API reports face states including unloaded, loading, loaded, and failed.

Choose the right capture and font-wait strategy

Choice Use it when What it does
document.fonts.ready You need the fonts currently required by the rendered document. Waits for currently required font loading and related layout to settle; it does not establish that a preferred face succeeded.
document.fonts.load(font, text), then readiness A specific family, style, weight, or representative character sample is essential. Requests matching font faces for the sample, then lets you wait for document font readiness and check status.
page.screenshot() You need a one-off capture or custom automation flow. Captures the page or full page; it is a capture API, not a visual comparison assertion.
Playwright Test toHaveScreenshot() You are running visual comparisons with Playwright Test and maintaining a baseline. Retries until two consecutive page screenshots match before comparison. It is a Playwright Test assertion, not a method available in every Playwright script.

For the capture and assertion behavior, see Playwright’s Page API and PageAssertions.

Make screenshots repeatable beyond font loading

Loaded fonts remove one source of variation, not all of them. Keep the capture environment and page state as consistent as possible:

  • Use the same browser engine and version and, where practical, the same operating-system image as the baseline.
  • Fix viewport dimensions and device scale factor. Choose the screenshot scale deliberately: css produces one output pixel per CSS pixel; device uses device pixels.
  • Wait for the content state you intend to capture, not just DOM creation or an arbitrary delay.
  • Trigger lazy-loaded regions included in the image before checking font readiness.
  • Move the pointer away from hover-sensitive content when hover state is not part of the target image.
  • Control animation, caret, timestamps, rotating content, and other changing elements. Playwright’s screenshot assertions support animation control, masks, and custom styles for visual volatility.
  • When a required font fails, make that a test failure; accept fallback only when it is acceptable for the screenshot’s purpose.

Playwright notes that screenshot output can vary with operating system, browser and platform, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Its visual comparisons guidance and PageAssertions API cover environment consistency and ways to handle volatile elements.

Troubleshoot missing or inconsistent fonts

  • The screenshot still shows a fallback font: document.fonts.ready can resolve even if the intended face failed. Request the specific face with a matching document.fonts.load() call and inspect its status or resource failure.
  • The first capture is correct but later content is not: the font check may have run before lazy or conditional content appeared. Trigger and wait for that content, then perform the font wait.
  • A fixed sleep sometimes works and sometimes does not: a delay neither confirms font readiness nor adapts to slower runs. Wait for the content state and font API condition instead.
  • networkidle did not stabilize the image: network idle is a heuristic, not a check of the font face or intended rendered content. Use explicit readiness conditions; Playwright discourages this wait state in tests.
  • Text differs across machines despite loaded fonts: align the browser, operating system, viewport, scale, and capture settings. Font rasterization and layout can differ across host environments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does document.fonts.ready wait for every font on a site?

It resolves after fonts required by the document’s current rendering and related layout work have settled; content revealed later can introduce additional font use.

Can a screenshot assertion be used in any Playwright script?

No. toHaveScreenshot() is a Playwright Test assertion. Use page.screenshot() for direct capture in a regular Playwright script.
