Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If Microsoft Teams will not sign in or keeps reconnecting, first check whether websites load in your browser, then record any Teams sign-in status code. Those two checks help distinguish an internet problem from an account, organization policy, or Teams client issue. Work or school accounts may require an administrator to resolve access problems.
Start by identifying where the failure occurs
Open a website in your browser. If it will not load, resolve the broader internet connection problem before troubleshooting Teams. If websites work but Teams does not, try the Teams web app at teams.microsoft.com while the desktop or mobile app is failing.

- Websites and Teams both fail: investigate the internet connection or network before changing Teams settings.
- Teams web works but the installed app fails: focus on the installed client, its sign-in session, or local app state.
- Teams web and the installed app both fail: account, organization policy, network configuration, or a Microsoft service issue may be involved.
The web-versus-app comparison is a diagnostic clue, not proof of a single cause. If the issue is intermittent, note which network you are using and whether your organization requires a VPN. Microsoft advises connecting to the required organization network before opening Teams and avoiding network changes while Teams is open. Check Microsoft 365 Status for service incidents; no current outage is established here.

Capture the sign-in error before trying fixes
If Teams displays a sign-in status code, write down the complete code and the step at which it appeared—for example, before entering credentials, after the password, or during verification. Microsoft says the code can help an IT administrator diagnose the issue. Its published mappings are clues, not guarantees that the listed cause is the only possible one.

If your code is not listed or the suggested check does not help, give the exact code to your IT administrator instead of repeatedly guessing at fixes. Microsoft Support notes that “In many cases, only your IT admin or sysadmin will be able to resolve sign-in issues for you.” See Microsoft’s Teams sign-in troubleshooting guidance.
Sign out, reopen Teams, and complete verification
- In Teams, select your profile menu and choose Sign out.
- Let Teams close, then reopen it and sign in with the account you intend to use.
- If Teams displays a Sign in banner, select it and complete any requested multifactor authentication (MFA) or other verification.
- If no sign-in window appears, check the taskbar notification area for a Teams icon badge. Quit and reopen Teams if needed.
A reauthentication banner can block chats, calls, and meetings until you sign in successfully. Microsoft Support states: “If Teams asks you to sign in again, you won’t be able to chat, call or join meetings until you do.” See Microsoft’s access restoration instructions.
A repeated sign-in prompt does not necessarily mean your password is wrong. Microsoft lists organization-required VPN or network access, detected sign-in risk, a required password change, and device requirements as possible reasons for another authentication challenge. If the prompt returns after a successful sign-in, contact your organization’s IT administrator.

Clear the cache only if restarting and sign-in do not help
Cache clearing is different from uninstalling Teams. Microsoft warns that deleting cached material can remove web-client cache, icons, thumbnails, local message history, Teams display images, and other add-ons. Quit Teams completely first, and check current instructions for your installed client because cache locations may vary by app version.
Windows
- Right-click the Teams icon in the taskbar and select Quit.
- In File Explorer, open
%appdata%MicrosoftTeams. - Delete the contents of that folder, then restart Teams and sign in.
Mac
- Quit Teams from its icon.
- Delete
~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams. - Reopen Teams and sign in.
These paths are the ones Microsoft lists for the clients covered by its reconnect instructions. See Microsoft’s reconnect troubleshooting article before clearing data, especially if your Teams version uses a different cache layout.

Test the browser, VPN, and network configuration
- Try Teams on the web: open teams.microsoft.com. If you are troubleshooting the web app, Microsoft suggests temporarily disabling ad blockers.
- Check the required network: if your organization requires a VPN, connect to it before opening Teams. Follow your organization’s instructions rather than assuming the VPN should always be on or off.
- Restart the network connection: Microsoft lists restarting the Wi-Fi modem among possible reconnect steps. This is a troubleshooting action, not a reason to buy networking equipment.
- Consider reinstalling: Microsoft also lists reinstalling Teams as a further option when simpler checks have not resolved the issue.
These actions help isolate possible causes; they do not establish that a VPN, ad blocker, modem, or installation is necessarily responsible.
Check the account and organization’s access requirements
For work or school access, a correct password may not be enough. Microsoft’s login guidance says Teams is part of Microsoft 365 and requires a Microsoft 365 Apps for business or Enterprise license; an organization may also require additional verification. A user may need administrator help if the company account or domain is the source of the failure. See Microsoft’s Teams login page and its sign-in troubleshooting guidance.

Those differences can help narrow down whether the issue is specific to the client, device, network, or organization account.

If sign-in succeeds but you cannot join one meeting, the problem may be meeting-specific rather than a general Teams connection failure. Check that you joined using the invited work or school account. A meeting may require an email one-time passcode, admission from the lobby, or permission under the organizer’s meeting policies. Low connectivity can also delay joining. Ask the organizer or your administrator about meeting access rules if the error applies to only that meeting. See Microsoft’s guidance for joining a Teams meeting.
