In Google Messages, a single check means an RCS message was sent, a double check means it was delivered, and a color-filled double check means it was read. Those icons do not appear on SMS or MMS. To check which type you are sending, read the compose bar: “RCS message” means RCS, while “Text message” means carrier SMS/MMS.
What the check marks mean in Google Messages
Look beside the message for its RCS status icon. The stages are distinct: sent confirms the message left your device, delivered means it reached the recipient’s device, and read indicates it was opened.

- Color-filled two checks: The recipient read the message.
Google says these icons do not show on SMS or MMS messages. Their absence therefore does not tell you whether an SMS was read. Google Messages Help
How to tell whether a message is RCS or SMS/MMS
In Google Messages, check the compose bar before sending. “RCS message” identifies RCS; “Text message” means the message will go through the carrier as SMS or MMS. The conversation may also show “SMS” or “MMS” beneath the send icon.

What green bubbles mean on iPhone
On iPhone, both RCS and SMS/MMS messages appear in green bubbles. Green tells you the message is not iMessage; it does not distinguish RCS from SMS/MMS. Apple says RCS supports delivery and read receipts, but whether it is available depends on the iOS version and carrier.

Check with your carrier if you cannot tell whether RCS is enabled. Apple Support Google likewise notes that RCS availability varies by region and carrier. Google Messages Help

RCS uses mobile data or Wi-Fi. If RCS is unavailable—for example, if the recipient is not online—Google Messages can send the message as SMS/MMS instead. In Google Messages, open your profile icon, then Messages settings → RCS chats and inspect Automatically resend as text (SMS/MMS). The message’s transport label can help you identify how it is being sent.

Troubleshoot RCS in Google Messages
If RCS is unavailable or stuck connecting or verifying, try Google’s recommended checks:
- Open your profile icon → Messages settings → RCS chats and check the status.
- Update Google Messages and make sure it is your default SMS app.
- If the phone has two SIMs, check that the correct data SIM is selected.
- Verify that the phone number is correct and that the phone can receive the SMS used for verification.
- If the app reports that RCS is not supported, check with your carrier about RCS availability.
These checks can address common setup or verification problems, but they cannot resolve every carrier-side issue. Google Messages Help
