If your SteamVR view is drifting or floating, first check whether the base stations can see your tracked devices and are stable, then recalibrate the room if the floor, play-area direction, or virtual position is wrong. If movement only feels delayed, check frame timing before treating it as a tracking fault.
Start by identifying the symptom
Tracking loss, an incorrect room calibration, and performance lag can feel similar, but they call for different fixes. Check SteamVR’s device status while the problem is happening. Steam’s Vive troubleshooting guide says a pulsing-green device icon means that device is not tracking; a gray headset display can also indicate tracking loss. Steam’s Vive troubleshooting guide and Index troubleshooting provide device-specific checks.

- Drifting or floating movement: inspect station visibility, stability, reflections, and obstructions.
- “My virtual position is different than my actual position” or “The orientation of my play area is not correct”: run Room Setup, particularly if the stations or room layout changed.
- Movement feels delayed or jerky: inspect Advanced Frame Timing to distinguish performance lag from tracking loss.
Check base-station power, visibility, and stability
- Make sure every base station is powered on and aimed toward the play area. Confirm that tracked devices can see the stations and, where the setup requires it, that stations can see one another.
- Restart SteamVR, then check the status of the headset and trackers in the SteamVR window.
- Inspect the stations’ placement. Steam’s recommended Index arrangement is to mount stations at least 2 m (6.5 ft) above the floor, angle them down 30–45 degrees, and keep them no more than 5 m (16 ft) apart. Opposite corners facing the center of the play area are a useful arrangement where practical. These are recommendations, not a guarantee that every other configuration will fail. See Steam Support’s Index Lighthouse tracking guidance.
- Secure each station on a surface that does not move or vibrate. A station that shifts during play can change the tracking geometry.
For room-scale play, Steam’s FAQ specifies at least 2 m by 1.5 m (6.5 ft by 5 ft) of clear space and a maximum 5 m (16 ft) separation between base stations. Check the requirements for your particular hardware and play area in the Index tracking FAQ.

Test for reflections and obstructions
Windows, mirrors, televisions, and monitor screens can interfere with tracking in some rooms. Temporarily cover reflective surfaces and check whether the stations’ view of the headset and trackers is blocked by furniture, people, or other objects. Change one thing at a time and test again so you can tell whether the adjustment helped. Steam lists reflections and visibility among the environmental factors to check in its Index Lighthouse guidance.

Run Room Setup for floor, position, or orientation errors
If the floor position is too high or low, your virtual position is offset, or the play-area front is wrong, recalibrate the room in SteamVR. Room Setup measures the floor position, and moving base stations can change that measurement. Steam says a fresh setup can help resolve issues caused by changes in the environment or base-station positioning. Use SteamVR Room Setup after changing station positions or room geometry.
Steam also documents quick calibration at SteamVR > Settings > Developer > Room and Tracking. The label or availability of controls may vary with the SteamVR version and device family; consult Steam’s guided floor-position instructions if you cannot find the option.

Separate tracking trouble from performance lag
Open SteamVR > Settings > Developer > Advanced Frame Timing when the headset seems to move late or stutter. Steam says frame-timing spikes point toward CPU performance as a likely cause rather than a tracking fault. Compare that timing information with device status: timing spikes suggest performance trouble, while a tracking-status warning or gray headset display points toward lost tracking. Follow Steam’s performance and troubleshooting guidance for further diagnosis.
If alignment still fails
Once placement, visibility, reflections, and Room Setup have been checked, troubleshoot the stations and devices individually rather than assuming a mount or replacement is needed.

- Check base-station synchronization, firmware, LED state, and operation using the instructions for your station model.
- Use the relevant support path for your hardware family: Vive troubleshooting or Valve Index and Lighthouse troubleshooting.
- If a station cannot be positioned securely where it has a clear view, Steam says base stations use a standard 1/4-inch UNC mount; compatible tripods or light stands can be alternatives to wall brackets. Verify compatibility and secure installation for your hardware. A mount by itself does not correct every tracking problem. See Steam’s base-station placement guidance.
