How to Troubleshoot Google Home Commands That Are Missed or Delayed

Find out whether a missed or delayed Google Home command is caused by wake detection, speech recognition, a linked smart-home device, or Wi-Fi—and follow the right fix.

If Google Home is not responding to voice commands, first work out which part is failing: wake-word detection, understanding your request, carrying out a linked smart-home action, or responding slowly. Check power and microphone mute, watch for the device’s wake indicator, then test the network or affected smart-home device only if the symptoms point there.

Start by identifying what failed

Say “Hey Google” or “OK Google” and watch the speaker or display. The indicator varies by model: check the LED dots, the Google Home Speaker light ring, or the colored dots on a Nest display. Then follow the matching path:

  • No indicator and no response: check power, the microphone switch, and wake-word detection.
  • The device wakes but misunderstands or gives no useful answer: check speech recognition and try the request again.
  • The assistant answers questions, but one smart-home action fails: check that device, its name, and its connection to Google Home.
  • Commands work but take unusually long, or the device appears offline: investigate Wi-Fi and the internet connection.

If Google Home does not hear the wake phrase

Check power and the microphone

Make sure the speaker or display is plugged in and powered. Check its physical microphone switch or mute control: the location and operation differ across Google Home, Nest Mini, Nest Audio, and Nest displays, so use the control for your specific model. If the microphone is muted, the device cannot hear “Hey Google” or “OK Google.”

Restart the device and adjust sensitivity

If the microphone is on but wake detection remains unreliable, disconnect the device from power and reconnect it. You can also adjust hotword sensitivity in the Google Home settings. These steps target detection; they will not repair a failed smart-home account link or an internet connection problem.

If it wakes but misunderstands the request

Ask, “Hey Google, repeat the question.” If it repeats your request incorrectly, speak more slowly or try different wording. Google’s guidance is: “If it’s still not recognizing the question, speak slower or try another question.” See Google’s steps for fixing issues with “Hey Google”.

If the assistant understands questions but misinterprets the name of a device, give the target a clearer name in the Google Home app. Avoid names that sound alike, contain numbers or special characters, or duplicate a room name. See Google’s guidance for controlling home devices by voice.

If a smart-home command fails for one device

When other commands work but, for example, a light or plug does not respond, focus on that device rather than the speaker’s wake detection.

  1. Confirm the target device is powered and online. Check that it and the Google speaker or display use the same Wi-Fi network and are assigned to the same Home in the Google Home app.
  2. Try controlling the device from the Google Home app. If app control also fails, the issue is not limited to voice input; check the device maker’s app or connection.
  3. Check the device manufacturer’s firmware and account details. If you changed the device in its manufacturer’s app, or it has disappeared from Google Home, sync devices or reconnect the partner account in Google Home.
  4. Try a clearer voice command using the device’s current name. Google’s smart-home device troubleshooting guidance covers checking connections and linked devices.

If commands are slow or the device is offline

Wi-Fi is one possible cause of delay, not the explanation for every missed command. Google notes that performance can vary with distance from the router or Wi-Fi point, frequency, physical barriers, interference, and other network traffic. An ISP connection can also be slow.

  • Compact 7" Display Design – Great for kitchens, bedrooms, desks, offices, counters, and nightstands with a clean modern smart display design.
  1. Move the speaker or display nearer the router or Wi-Fi point and test again. If you use mesh Wi-Fi, check the placement and visibility of the points.
  2. Restart the network equipment, then check whether other devices also have slow internet. If they do, investigate the connection or ask your internet provider about an outage or performance issue.
  3. If you use Nest Wifi or Google Wifi, check Google Home Activity for network insight cards, when available for your setup.
  4. If the device lost Wi-Fi after a network name, password, or provider change, it may need to be set up again in Google Home. Google also notes that if the voice assistant responds to questions or commands, the device is connected to Wi-Fi. See Google’s Wi-Fi reconnection steps and its guide to troubleshooting slow internet on Nest Wifi or Google Wifi.

Do these checks before considering new network equipment. If they point to weak coverage or poor point placement, improving coverage may help with connectivity; it will not fix a muted microphone, misheard speech, or a broken smart-home link.
