1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA safe Windows 11 feature-update rollout starts by naming the target release, checking which managed devices can take it, and agreeing on readiness and pause criteria before assigning deployment policies. Then align the management policies that control the offer and restart experience, deploy to a small pilot, review the results, and expand only when the organization’s acceptance criteria are met. The exact settings depend on your Windows editions, management platform, device mix, and target release.
1. Choose a target release and define the scope
Name the intended Windows version
Decide which Windows 11 feature update you intend to deploy before configuring policies. Microsoft describes one Windows 11 feature update each year, targeted for the second half of the calendar year. That cadence is a planning reference, not a recommendation to deploy a particular release. Check that your target is still supported and review its release-health information for known issues and safeguard holds when you plan the rollout.

Microsoft’s planning guidance lists support periods of 24 months from general availability for Home, Pro, Pro for Workstations, and Pro for Education, and 36 months for Enterprise and Education. The planning page does not state the year for those figures. Recheck the current lifecycle documentation for the specific release and editions in your estate before setting a deployment deadline.

Build deployment groups that represent operationally meaningful populations, rather than assigning the update to every managed device at once. Identify the current Windows versions and editions in scope, Windows 11 hardware eligibility, applications and peripherals that need validation, and user groups or device roles that could be affected by downtime. Include critical-use and user-less devices as distinct populations if their operating or restart requirements differ.

Do not assume that every device in a group is eligible merely because it is managed. Your inventory and management environment—not general guidance—determine which endpoints can upgrade and whether any safeguards or compatibility issues apply.
2. Set readiness gates before deployment
Turn the rollout plan into criteria that the team can check before moving from one deployment group to the next. Useful gates include:
- Management readiness: Devices check in with the selected management service and can reach the update service required by your deployment route.
- Compatibility: The hardware, business applications, peripherals, and critical workflows in the group have been assessed for the target release.
- Operational readiness: Support staff can handle expected questions and failures, and device owners know when restarts may occur.
- Recovery: The organization has defined its backup and recovery expectations and a process for identifying blocked, failed, or non-reporting devices.
- Expansion criteria: The team has agreed what counts as an acceptable pilot outcome, what triggers a pause, and who makes that decision.
These are planning checks, not a claim that any particular organization has completed them. Microsoft also identifies the Windows Insider Program for Business as a way to assess infrastructure, deployment processes, management tools, and application compatibility ahead of broad adoption. Treat preview testing as preparation for a production rollout, not as the production feature update itself.

3. Choose a management route and reconcile policy settings
Use the management tools that fit your existing environment and device estate. Microsoft identifies existing management tools as viable for managed devices; possible approaches include Intune or other MDM policies, Configuration Manager, WSUS, and Windows Update client policies. These are not interchangeable recipes: their prerequisites, targeting, reporting, and policy interactions differ. Select a route based on the infrastructure and administrator skills you already operate, the device populations you must reach, and the visibility and controls your rollout requires.
Before assigning deployment policies, map which policy surface selects the feature-update offer and which controls client behavior such as deadlines, active hours, and restart experience. Look for conflicting deferrals, pauses, or overlapping assignments. The sources establish multiple available approaches but do not establish a universal best tool.
If you use an Intune feature update policy
- Select the target Windows version in the feature update policy, then assign the intended device groups.
- Review the assigned update rings. Microsoft’s Intune guidance says to set the ring’s feature-update deferral period to zero so it does not delay the feature update selected by the feature update policy, and to ensure the ring is not pausing feature updates.
- Keep client experience controls in view. The feature update policy chooses the Windows version offered; update rings and Windows Update client settings continue to govern behaviors such as restart experience, deadlines, and active hours.
- Plan for provisioning timing. Feature update policies do not apply during Windows Autopilot out-of-box experience. They take effect at the first Windows Update scan after provisioning completes, so account for that timing when planning newly provisioned devices.
4. Verify Windows 10 eligibility and fallback behavior
An Intune Windows 11 feature update policy can target eligible Windows 10 devices. A targeted device that does not meet Windows 11 minimum requirements remains on its current Windows 10 version by default; assignment alone does not make it upgrade. Intune documents an optional fallback to install the latest Windows 10 feature update on ineligible devices, subject to licensing requirements. Confirm the licensing and operational effect before enabling it.

Submitting the policy also accepts the Windows 11 license agreement terms for the targeted devices and users. Check the policy implications with the people responsible for your organization’s licensing and deployment governance before submission. For every deployment route, assess actual device eligibility and relevant safeguard information in your management environment; general product guidance does not establish the results for your fleet.
5. Deploy in rings and make each expansion a decision
Begin with a limited pilot, then widen the rollout in deliberate stages. Microsoft recommends deploying to different populations or rings so a small group can test the update before broader deployment. There is no universal ring size or duration in the guidance; choose populations and observation periods that suit your device mix, risk, and support capacity.
- Pilot: Assign the target release to a small, representative group that can exercise important applications, peripherals, and workflows.
- Observe: Track anomalies, installation errors, app compatibility issues, support requests, and user impact. Include devices that fail or stop reporting in the review rather than judging only successful installations.
- Decide: Compare observed results with the acceptance criteria set before deployment. Pause and investigate if the criteria are not met; expand only when the rollout owner approves.
- Expand: Move to the next defined population, continue monitoring, and repeat the decision before assigning broader groups.
Windows Update client policies can be configured through Group Policy or MDM to control update offers and experiences, allowing organizations to test reliability and performance on a subset before deploying more broadly. Apply the same staged-deployment discipline regardless of the management route.

6. Set enforcement and timing for the device role
Deadlines and grace periods influence when an update is enforced and how much restart flexibility users have. Microsoft documents separate controls for deadlines and grace periods. Set them in light of security obligations, work schedules, device role, network conditions, and the organization’s tolerance for interruptions; a single deadline or deferral value is not appropriate for every fleet.
Microsoft’s guidance describes maintenance-window capabilities introduced through Group Policy and MDM with the January 2026 non-security update for Windows 11 24H2 and later. The policies are intended to constrain update actions to specified hours, interpreted in each device’s local time. Verify that the device’s release and policy configuration support the behavior before relying on it—especially for user-less or critical-use systems—and test how the window interacts with your enforcement settings.

Maintain a view of which devices were targeted, which installed successfully, and which are blocked, ineligible, failing, or not reporting. Use that view to direct troubleshooting and to decide whether to hold or expand the next ring. The specific reporting and eligibility signals available depend on the management route you selected, so confirm that your chosen tools provide enough visibility before broad assignment.
Close the rollout only after the in-scope populations have been accounted for and unresolved devices have an owner and next action. Keep the release target, group assignments, policy interactions, exceptions, and expansion decisions documented so the deployment can be supported and its outcome understood.
