Start with the Windows 11 Windows Update repair if it is offered and Windows is running. For a problem that began just after an update or a system change, try uninstalling that update or using System Restore. For corrupted system files, run DISM followed by SFC. If the PC will not boot, go to WinRE. Reserve Reset or a reinstall for cases the less disruptive options do not resolve.

If Windows 11 starts: reinstall through Windows Update
Microsoft’s “Fix problems using Windows Update” option reinstalls the current Windows version to repair system files and components while keeping apps, personal files, and settings. It may be absent on managed PCs or unsupported Windows versions.
- Open Settings > System > Recovery.
- Under Fix problems using Windows Update, select Reinstall now.
- Keep the PC connected to power and the internet while Windows completes the repair.
Microsoft describes this Windows Update repair as keeping apps, files, and settings. See Microsoft’s Windows reinstall guidance for current availability details.

If the issue followed an update or system change
Uninstall the recent update
If the fault appeared after a Windows update, uninstalling it may reverse the change without removing personal files, apps, or settings. Some updates cannot be removed. When Windows will not start, you can reach the uninstall option through WinRE.
Use System Restore for a recent driver, app, update, or setting
System Restore returns system files and settings to the state captured in a restore point. It does not affect personal files, but it can undo apps, drivers, updates, and settings added after that point. Choose a restore point from before the problem began, bearing in mind what system changes you made afterward. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore guide.
If Windows starts but system files may be damaged
Run the built-in Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool (DISM) first, then System File Checker (SFC). Use an elevated Command Prompt—open Start, search for Command Prompt, select Run as administrator—and run these commands in order:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth- Wait for DISM to finish. Then run
sfc /scannow.
Leave the Command Prompt window open until SFC verification completes. These tools target Windows component and protected-file corruption; they are not a universal remedy for hardware faults, malware, or every startup problem. Microsoft’s instructions are in Use the System File Checker tool.
If Windows will not boot: use Windows Recovery Environment
WinRE provides recovery tools when Windows cannot start normally. For a startup-related fault, try Startup Repair first; WinRE also includes options to uninstall updates or run System Restore.
- Enter WinRE from the recovery prompt if Windows displays one, or start the PC from Windows installation media.
- If using installation media, choose Repair my PC—not the option to install Windows.
- Open Troubleshoot > Advanced options, then choose Startup Repair, Uninstall Updates, or System Restore according to the likely cause.
Menu wording can vary by Windows version and device. See Microsoft’s Windows Recovery Environment overview.

If you need to reinstall Windows, choose the file-preserving route
In-place reinstall: start Setup while signed in
An in-place reinstall can keep both files and installed apps, but only if you start Windows Setup from inside a running Windows session and choose the matching option. It is not the same as booting from the USB drive and installing Windows from scratch.
- While signed into Windows, open the installation media and run
setup.exe. - Choose Change what to keep.
- Select Keep personal files and apps to retain personal files, installed apps, and settings. Keep personal files only retains files but removes apps. Keep nothing removes files, settings, and apps.
- Review the selection before continuing. If the option to keep files and apps is unavailable, stop and check the Windows edition, language, and installation choices rather than proceeding on the assumption that files will stay.
Microsoft’s installation-media reinstall instructions distinguish this process from a clean installation.
Reset this PC: “Keep my files” still removes apps and settings
Reset is more disruptive than the options above. Its Keep my files choice retains personal files but removes installed apps and settings. Remove everything removes personal files as well as apps and settings. For the Windows copy, cloud download obtains a fresh copy; local reinstall uses files already on the PC and may not include the latest updates. Read Microsoft’s recovery options guidance before selecting a reset.
Clean installation: avoid it if files must remain
A clean install started by booting the PC from installation media removes personal files, apps, manufacturer customizations, and settings. It is not the file-preserving in-place reinstall described above. Microsoft details the distinction in its reinstall Windows with installation media instructions.
Prepare a backup and recovery media
- Back up important files separately. Use an external drive or another storage location you control; Windows recovery options are not a substitute for a backup, and Microsoft does not guarantee that every repair will succeed without unexpected data loss.
- Have the BitLocker recovery key ready. An encrypted PC may ask for it when entering recovery or making system changes.
- Use installation media only when needed. Microsoft specifies a USB drive of at least 8 GB for creating Windows installation media. That minimum applies to installation media, not every backup or recovery workflow. Microsoft recovery-options guidance
- Do not mistake a Recovery Drive for a file backup. Microsoft says recovery media does not include personal files, and creating a Recovery Drive erases the selected USB drive. Use an empty drive. Microsoft Recovery Drive guidance
Windows 10 support status
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended after that date. Recovery options may still help repair an installation, but a repair does not restore ongoing support. Microsoft Support: Windows 10 support ends
