How to Troubleshoot Game Crashes and Stuttering After NVIDIA App Tuning

Start by treating the NVIDIA App change as the likely cause. Restore the affected game’s NVIDIA App settings to their defaults, record what changed, and test with the NVIDIA in-game overlay, recording, filters, and performance widgets disabled. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, allow one run for shader compilation; persistent stutter, launch crashes, or visual artifacts justify rebuilding the NVIDIA shader cache. If symptoms still follow a particular driver revision, reinstall or roll back that driver. On Windows 11, also verify that the game is assigned to the intended GPU.

This sequence isolates one variable at a time, so you can tell whether the fault is a per-game tuning profile, an injected overlay feature, a newly rebuilt or damaged shader cache, a driver revision, or the wrong graphics adapter.

What changed when NVIDIA App tuning was applied?

The NVIDIA App can optimize supported games, apply driver-level options, and maintain settings either per game or globally. Those changes can alter rendering and frame-pacing behavior without changing the game’s own graphics menu. A profile may enable or change options such as DLSS, frame generation, Reflex, Smooth Motion, sharpening, or a frame limit. The first diagnostic step is therefore not a hardware replacement: return the game’s profile to a known-good state.

Symptom Most useful first check Why
Crash immediately after optimization or when launching Restore the game’s NVIDIA App settings, then test with the overlay disabled A changed profile or injected overlay can be removed without changing the driver.
Short hitches after a driver update, especially during the first run Play one comparable session to allow shader compilation A new driver deletes the existing shader cache, so shaders must be compiled again.
Repeated stutter after several runs, launch crashes, or corrupted-looking graphics Rebuild the shader cache NVIDIA says damaged cache files can cause crashes, lower performance, and visual artifacts.
Problems begin exactly with one driver revision and remain at default settings Reinstall or roll back the driver The timing points to the driver rather than the tuning profile.
A laptop or multi-GPU desktop performs unexpectedly poorly Check Windows 11 per-app GPU assignment The game may be running on an unintended adapter.

Do not change several of these variables at once. A clean baseline is what makes every later result meaningful.

Record a before-and-after baseline

Before resetting anything, write down the current state. A phone photograph of the NVIDIA App page and the game’s graphics menu is sufficient. Record the game version, NVIDIA App version, driver version, GPU model, Windows version, display mode, resolution, refresh rate, and frame cap. Also note whether the failure is a crash to desktop, a freeze, a driver-reset message, a repeatable hitch in one scene, or broad uneven frame pacing.

For the NVIDIA profile, record every non-default option you can identify, including:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • DLSS mode or other upscaling mode.
  • Frame generation.
  • Reflex or latency-related options.
  • Smooth Motion.
  • Sharpening.
  • Driver-level frame limit and synchronization choices.
  • Any quality setting the App changed for the game.

Use the same save file, map, replay, or benchmark route for each test. Run that scene for a comparable interval and keep the display mode and frame cap unchanged. Without a repeatable scene, a shader-compilation hitch can be confused with a permanent stutter.

Step 1: Restore the affected game’s NVIDIA App settings

  1. Open the NVIDIA App and select Graphics.
  2. Select the affected game from the supported-games list.
  3. Review the profile and compare it with the notes or photograph you made.
  4. Use the profile’s restore or default control to return the game’s NVIDIA App settings to their defaults.
  5. Apply the change if the App presents an Apply button, then close and relaunch the game.

This resets the App’s per-game tuning; it does not erase your save files. Check the game’s own graphics menu afterward, because an optimization may also have changed an in-game option. Re-enter only the settings you know were previously stable, and leave experimental features off for the first test.

If the crash disappears at the default profile, the original tuning was the trigger or interacted badly with the game. Reintroduce one setting at a time later rather than applying the optimization again as a bundle.

Step 2: Test a clean session with NVIDIA’s overlay features disabled

The NVIDIA App’s in-game overlay can inject recording, performance monitoring, and filter functions into a running game. These are useful features, but they add another component to a crash or frame-pacing investigation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the NVIDIA App and open its settings.
  2. Find the in-game overlay controls.
  3. Turn off the in-game overlay and disable recording, performance-monitoring overlays or statistics, and filters.
  4. Restart the game completely. If the game was left running in the background, end its process before relaunching.
  5. Repeat the same scene and test interval used for the baseline.

Keep the overlay off while diagnosing. If the game is stable, re-enable recording, filters, and statistics separately after the other fixes are complete. The first feature that reproduces the crash or hitch is the leading suspect. An overlay that is harmless in one title can still conflict with a particular game, anti-cheat component, or driver revision.

Step 3: Decide whether to wait for shader compilation or rebuild the cache

Why a new driver can stutter once

NVIDIA’s 3D Settings documentation explains that shader compiles are normally performed each time a game runs and are a common cause of gameplay stuttering. The shader cache stores those compiled shaders so later runs do not need to compile them again. Installing a new driver deletes the cache, so the first run after installation can hitch while it is rebuilt.

If the only symptom is a short hitch during the first visit to new areas immediately after a driver installation, finish one comparable run before deleting anything. Quit normally and launch the game again. A second run that is clearly smoother is consistent with ordinary cache regeneration.

When a cache rebuild is justified

Repeated stutter after several runs, a crash during launch, a sudden performance drop, or visual artifacts are stronger reasons to rebuild. NVIDIA Support warns that damaged NVIDIA Shader Cache files may cause games or applications to crash on launch, exhibit lower performance, or display visual artifacts.

Documented NVIDIA cache-reset procedure

  1. Open the NVIDIA App and select Graphics.
  2. Open Global Settings.
  3. Set Shader Cache Size to Off, then apply the change.
  4. Restart Windows. Do not skip this reboot; it ensures the old cache is no longer in use.
  5. In File Explorer, enter %LocalAppData%NVIDIA in the address bar.
  6. Delete the NVIDIA shader-cache files or cache folders in that user-local NVIDIA directory. Do not delete unrelated game saves or folders outside the NVIDIA cache location.
  7. Launch the game and allow it to compile shaders again. The first run can hitch while this happens.
  8. After the cache has regenerated, return to NVIDIA App > Graphics > Global Settings and set Shader Cache Size back to Driver Default.

If Windows reports that a file is in use, close the game, NVIDIA App, and other graphics-intensive programs, then retry after the reboot. If a crash returns before the game can rebuild the cache, continue with the driver and GPU-assignment checks instead of repeatedly launching into the same failure.

Choose an appropriate cache-size setting

NVIDIA provides Disabled, Unlimited, and fixed-size limits. A limit that is too small can evict shaders still in use and create additional gameplay stutters. Choose a limit large enough for the games you normally play and small enough to fit comfortably in available disk space. Leave the setting at Driver Default unless you have a specific reason to manage the size; the reset procedure above uses Off only temporarily so the damaged files can be removed.

Cache choice Use during troubleshooting Important qualification
Off or Disabled Only long enough to stop using the existing files before deletion With caching disabled, shaders must be compiled repeatedly and stutter can increase.
Driver Default Normal operating choice after the rebuild Lets the driver select its standard behavior.
Fixed limit Useful only when you deliberately need a bounded cache A limit that is too small can evict active shaders and cause stutters.
Unlimited Possible when disk space is ample and many large games are installed It can consume more storage; it is not required for a normal repair.

Step 4: Reinstall or roll back the driver when timing points to it

Use this branch when the game still crashes or stutters with the profile restored, the overlay disabled, and a rebuilt cache, or when several games developed the same problem immediately after one driver revision.

Reinstall the current driver

  1. Open NVIDIA App and select Drivers.
  2. Locate the installed driver and open its three-dot menu.
  3. Choose Reinstall and complete the prompts.
  4. Restart Windows when prompted, even if the installer does not insist on it.
  5. Keep the game’s NVIDIA App profile at defaults and retest the same scene.

Reinstallation repairs the current driver installation without introducing a second driver version. Because installing a driver deletes the shader cache, expect a first-run compilation pass afterward; judge the result over more than that first run.

Roll back only when the revision is the common variable

If the issue began with a particular driver and remains at defaults, use the NVIDIA App’s driver controls to select a rollback or previously installed version when that option is offered. Keep a note of the version you left and the version you restored. Test the same game build, display mode, and frame cap after the rollback.

Do not combine a rollback with a new tuning profile, overlay changes, and a cache deletion in one step. If the older driver fixes the issue, the revision is the leading suspect. If it does not, return to the baseline and continue investigating the game or Windows configuration rather than cycling through drivers indefinitely.

Step 5: Confirm the Windows 11 GPU assignment

On a laptop with integrated and discrete graphics, or on a desktop with more than one adapter, Windows may launch the game on a different GPU than you intended. Verify the assignment before treating low performance as a driver defect.

  1. Open Settings in Windows 11.
  2. Go to System > Display > Graphics.
  3. Under the custom options for apps, locate the game. If it is absent, use Browse to add the game’s executable.
  4. Select the game and choose Options.
  5. Choose the graphics-performance option corresponding to the intended high-performance NVIDIA GPU, then select Save.
  6. Close and relaunch the game, keeping its display mode and frame cap identical to the earlier tests.

Check the executable carefully when a launcher starts several programs; assign the actual game executable rather than only the launcher. If the game is already assigned to the correct adapter, leave this setting unchanged and move on.

Use a controlled retest after every change

A useful retest changes one item and measures the same situation. Use this order:

  1. Launch the game with the restored default profile and all NVIDIA App overlay functions off.
  2. Play the recorded scene for the same interval. Note whether the failure is gone, less frequent, or unchanged.
  3. If a driver was just installed, repeat the scene after the initial shader-compilation run.
  4. Record the exact change, driver version, App version, and result before making another change.

Interpret the result rather than relying on a single frame-rate number. A crash that disappears is a stability change; a one-time hitch that does not recur is consistent with shader compilation; recurring spikes in the same location point to a persistent rendering or asset issue. A problem that appears across multiple games after one driver update is more likely driver-level than a single game’s profile.

Match the symptom to the next action

Observed result Next action
Stable after restoring defaults Leave the profile at defaults and re-enable only the settings you actually need, one at a time.
Stable only with overlay off Keep the overlay off for that game; test recording, filters, and statistics separately if you need them.
First run stutters, later run is smooth Keep the rebuilt cache and avoid judging performance from the first post-driver launch.
Stutter persists, or launch crash/artifacts remain Perform the documented cache reset, then retest before changing other settings.
Issue follows one driver revision at defaults Reinstall that driver; if the problem remains, use the available rollback to the previous known-good revision.
Low performance is limited to a hybrid-GPU system Correct the Windows 11 per-app GPU assignment and retest.
No change after all isolation steps Capture the evidence and contact the game or NVIDIA support channel rather than making uncontrolled changes.

Re-enable features without losing the evidence

Once the game is stable at the clean baseline, restore desired functions individually. Start one feature, launch the game, and repeat the same scene. Then add the next feature. A practical order is recording, performance statistics, filters, and finally any profile-level rendering option you want to use.

If one feature reproduces the problem, leave it off and report the exact combination instead of reverting every change. Include the game title and version, GPU model, driver version, NVIDIA App version, Windows version, the setting that triggered the failure, and whether the shader cache had been rebuilt. This information lets support reproduce the condition and prevents you from losing a known-good configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reset versus rollback: choosing the right remedy

Situation Prefer Reason
Only one game’s NVIDIA App profile was changed Restore that game’s settings It removes the changed variable while leaving the driver untouched.
Several games changed behavior after a driver update Allow one shader-compilation run, then consider reinstall or rollback The driver revision and its newly deleted cache are common variables.
Launch crashes or artifacts suggest damaged cache files Cache disable, reboot, delete, and rebuild It removes corrupted compiled data before further testing.
Overlay-specific failure Keep overlay features off and re-enable separately It isolates injected recording, filter, and monitoring functions.
Wrong adapter suspected Windows 11 per-app GPU assignment Changing game quality settings cannot fix a game running on the unintended GPU.

Keep a known-good configuration

After recovery, save your notes or screenshots with the date, driver version, NVIDIA App version, and the settings that worked. Before a future driver update or optimization, capture the same information again. That simple record makes it clear whether a new hitch is normal first-run shader compilation or a regression that appeared with a specific revision.

The reliable stopping point is a repeatable game session with the default profile, a functioning shader cache, the intended Windows GPU assignment, and only the overlay features you have tested. Reintroduce tuning only when you can identify the benefit and verify that it does not recreate the original crash or stutter.
