Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStart with the exact chain error or transaction receipt—not a generic wallet failure toast. Then check the signing coldkey’s free TAO and fee headroom, confirm the precise coldkey–hotkey–subnet position and amount, and account for locks, collateral, or subnet-pool behavior before retrying. These checks help distinguish a balance problem from an unavailable stake position, a pool-price issue, or a wallet-signing problem.
Capture the failure details before retrying
Record the exact error text and chain error name, wallet and version, network, transaction or extrinsic identifier, signing coldkey, target hotkey, subnet ID, requested amount, and operation: stake, delegate, remove stake, or unstake-all. Bittensor’s chain-error catalog organizes failures by exact error name and semantic class; use that name instead of guessing from a short wallet notification.

If you have a transaction hash or extrinsic receipt, determine whether the transaction was rejected before inclusion or included with a dispatch error. A wallet display may not distinguish a signing, submission, validation, or execution problem. Do not assume the stake changed based on an ambiguous message: inspect the current balance and stake position.
Check free TAO and fee headroom
Check the signing coldkey’s free TAO, not just its total or staked balance. The free amount must cover the requested operation and leave room for the transaction fee. Bittensor’s insufficient-balance guide describes failures caused by too little free balance for the amount or fee. The fee guide says the Alpha fallback described in its documentation is currently disabled.

The fee guide lists a 0.05% swap fee for stake and unstake operations, alongside a separate transaction fee. This is a documented guide value, not a guarantee that every operation has identical costs. Check the transaction preview and current network behavior before submitting again.
Match the request to the position and its units
Confirm that the selected coldkey and hotkey own the position you intend to change, and that the correct subnet is selected. Bittensor’s insufficient-balance guidance describes failures when an unstake or move exceeds the amount held by that coldkey–hotkey position.

For subnet staking, distinguish TAO from subnet-specific Alpha. Staking sends TAO through the subnet pool and credits Alpha; unstaking sells Alpha back through the pool for TAO. Check that the interface is showing the intended unit and that the requested amount does not exceed the position available for removal. See Bittensor’s staking documentation for the operation model.

Check why stake may be unavailable
A visible position is not necessarily fully withdrawable. Conviction locks or registration collateral can reserve part of the stake, reducing the amount available to remove. Compare the requested amount with the chain’s available amount and account for any reserve before retrying.

If the failure concerns a subnet position, check whether its trading is enabled and whether the position passes validation. An aggregate unstake-all may skip positions when trading is disabled or validation fails. After such an operation, inspect each subnet position individually rather than assuming every position was removed. Bittensor’s unstake-all documentation describes these cases.
Review pool price impact before a large removal
Subnet unstaking exchanges Alpha for TAO through the pool at its current state, so the output may differ from a one-to-one withdrawal. Larger removals can have greater price impact. The unstake-all documentation warns that Alpha positions are sold at current pool prices without limit protection. Review the quote or preview and any slippage controls your interface offers before submitting a large removal.

Map the error to the next check
| What the receipt or interface suggests | First checks |
|---|---|
| Insufficient balance or fee | Check the signing coldkey’s free TAO, the requested amount, fee headroom, and whether the exact chain error refers to balance or fee withdrawal. |
| Insufficient stake or amount too high | Verify the coldkey, hotkey, subnet position, requested versus available amount, and whether the amount is in TAO or subnet Alpha. |
| Stake unavailable | Check for conviction locks, registration collateral, or another reserved amount that reduces withdrawable stake. |
| Unstake-all completed but stake remains | Inspect each subnet position; a position may have been skipped because trading was disabled or validation failed. |
| Output or preview differs from expectation | Check the pool quote, Alpha units, current pool price, fees, and price impact or slippage. |
| Generic wallet or signing error | Preserve the exact receipt and wallet details, and establish whether a chain error exists before diagnosing a user-interface or signer problem. |
When the receipt does not explain the failure
Keep the wallet name and version, signing method, network, extrinsic ID, and exact error text. Consult the wallet’s current instructions or support channel if the chain error does not identify the cause. Bittensor documents using a proxy account for staking operations in its proxy guidance. A staking guide also recommends keeping the primary coldkey in cold storage; neither source establishes that every wallet or hardware signer supports every transaction flow. Review the guide’s account-safety recommendations in staking and delegation.
