Devices that can communicate with your Apple home locally may remain controllable in the Home app. A home hub does not keep remote access working without an internet connection, and it cannot replace a failed router, Wi-Fi network, or power supply.
What kind of outage do you have?
“Internet down” can mean the broadband connection has failed, or that the router and local Wi-Fi have stopped working. Those are different situations for a smart home.

| Situation | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Broadband or ISP outage; router and Wi-Fi still work | Local control may continue for accessories reachable on the home network. Features that depend on the internet or a manufacturer’s cloud service may not work. |
| Router or Wi-Fi failure | Wi-Fi accessories and bridges may be unreachable. A home hub does not substitute for a working local network. |
| Power failure | The router, home hub, bridges, and accessories need power to function. A battery backup can keep connected equipment powered, but cannot restore broadband service. |
| You are away from home | Apple describes a home hub as enabling accessory control while away. Without an internet path from the home, expect remote control to fail until connectivity returns. |
Why local control can work without broadband
HomeKit can discover and control accessories over the local network; that path is distinct from unrestricted internet access. Apple’s Platform Security guide describes a HomeKit router’s “Restrict to Home” mode as allowing “the connections required by HomeKit to discover and control the accessory from the local network.” That supports local control when broadband is unavailable, provided the router and relevant devices remain connected and powered. Apple Platform Security: HomeKit security.
This is not a guarantee that every accessory or feature will work offline. A device may rely on a manufacturer’s cloud service for some functions, and bridged accessories have additional components that must remain available. Apple also notes that network and internet problems can affect Siri requests and Home app accessory control. Apple: If your HomePod, HomePod mini, or Home app has an issue.

What the home hub does—and does not do
A home hub, such as a compatible HomePod or Apple TV, is important for controlling accessories while you are away and for hub-dependent capabilities. It still needs power and a connection to the home network. If broadband is out, do not rely on internet-based remote access; if Wi-Fi is down, the hub cannot restore local communication by itself. Apple’s current guidance covers home hub requirements and Matter accessories. Apple: Set up your HomePod, HomePod mini, or Apple TV as a home hub.
Accessory and protocol caveats
- Wi-Fi or direct HomeKit accessories: Local control may be available if the accessory and controlling Apple device can still communicate on the home network.
- Bridges: The bridge must remain powered and reachable. A bridge or its accessory may also depend on an internet service for particular features.
- Matter over Thread: Thread-enabled Matter accessories have specific requirements for a compatible Thread-enabled home hub or border router. Check Apple’s compatibility guidance for the relevant accessory and setup. Apple: Set up accessories with Matter.
- Siri, notifications, and automations: Their behavior depends on the accessory, software, network state, and feature. Apple’s guidance does not establish a universal offline feature matrix, so do not assume every request, alert, or automation will continue.
Check what is still working
- Separate an internet outage from a Wi-Fi outage. Check whether your router is powered and whether devices at home can still join the home Wi-Fi. Apple advises checking your provider’s outage information when internet service is unavailable. Apple troubleshooting guidance.
- Try local control from home. Connect your iPhone, iPad, or Mac to the same Wi-Fi network used by the accessories, then try the Home app. Apple specifically recommends checking that the controlling device and HomePod are on the same Wi-Fi network when accessories are unresponsive. Apple: If your HomePod or HomePod mini isn’t responding.
- Check the hub and accessories. Confirm that the home hub, any bridge, and the affected accessory are powered and connected to the home network. Apple treats an unreachable hub and a network mismatch as distinct troubleshooting issues. Apple home hub setup and troubleshooting.
- If several devices fail, restart the network equipment and affected devices. Apple advises restarting the modem or router, hubs, and accessories, and checking whether a VPN or third-party security software is interfering. Apple troubleshooting guidance.
Power backup: useful, but limited
A UPS battery backup for a router and home hub may keep those devices running during a power cut, assuming the accessories and any bridges also have power. It cannot fix an ISP outage, a failed router, a lost local network, or an accessory’s cloud dependency. No particular UPS model or runtime is established here.
