How to Track AI Agent Purchases Across Retailers and Payment Providers

Track an AI agent purchase in two places: the retailer’s order record and the payment provider or card account record. They describe different parts of the transaction. Save the agent instruction and checkout confirmation too, then match the records using the order number, date, amount, currency and merchant name. There is no documented universal dashboard that joins purchases across arbitrary retailers and payment providers.

Why one purchase can have several records

An AI-assisted checkout may involve the agent interface, the retailer, a payment service provider (PSP), and a card issuer or network. Each can hold a different piece of the transaction. Seeing a confirmation in an AI interface does not necessarily mean that interface owns the retailer’s order, handles delivery, or can resolve a payment dispute.

Record or layer What it can tell you Who handles it in the documented OpenAI flow
Agent instruction and checkout interface What you asked for, any approval step, and the order result reflected in the interface. The AI checkout interface passes checkout information and reflects an acceptance or decline; it is not necessarily the final order or fulfillment record.
Retailer order Whether the merchant accepted the order, plus order, fulfillment, return and support information. The merchant validates the order, accepts or declines it, and manages fulfillment and support.
Payment-provider transaction Payment processing information, such as whether a payment is authorized or posted. The merchant processes payment through its existing provider. A delegated payment arrangement may pass a limited token or request rather than raw card details.
Card issuer or network signals Card-account transaction information and, where supported, signals associated with an agent-initiated transaction. Availability depends on the payment setup and participating services; it is not a substitute for the retailer’s order record.

OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce Protocol documentation states that “OpenAI is not the merchant of record in the Agentic Commerce Protocol.” In that documented flow, the merchant remains responsible for the order and charges payment through its own provider. Other agent and retailer integrations may differ, so check the roles stated for the specific checkout you used.

How to reconcile an AI agent purchase

  1. Keep the original instruction and approval. Save what you asked the agent to buy and any confirmation or approval shown before checkout. This helps establish what you intended if the resulting order or charge looks unfamiliar.
  2. Save the retailer’s confirmation. Keep the retailer name, order number, items, amount, currency and order status. Use the retailer’s own order page or support channel for acceptance, fulfillment, delivery, returns and order changes.
  3. Check the payment record separately. Review the relevant PSP or card account for the transaction. Note whether it is pending/authorized or posted, along with the date, amount, currency and merchant descriptor. A retailer order and a payment entry are separate records, and their status or display timing may not match.
  4. Preserve agent-specific signals if available. If the checkout or payment setup provides agent attribution, a transaction outcome notification, or a record of the user instruction, save it alongside the order and payment details. Such signals are implementation-dependent.
  5. Compare the fields when something does not line up. Match the order ID, transaction reference if shown, retailer or merchant descriptor, date and time, amount, currency, and status. Include the original instruction or approval in your notes. This is a practical reconciliation checklist, not a universal data format prescribed by the cited protocols.
  6. Contact the party that owns the unresolved record. Ask the retailer about acceptance, fulfillment, returns or a mismatch in the order record; ask the PSP or card issuer about a payment entry or its status. Provide the relevant order number or transaction details without assuming one party can see every other system’s records.

What controls and tracking signals may exist

Delegated payment in OpenAI’s documented protocol

OpenAI’s developer documentation describes delegated payment requests that are limited by amount and expire, with a payment-provider-issued token used for the transaction. The documentation names Stripe Shared Payment Token as the first compatible implementation and says more PSPs are expected. This describes a payment authorization mechanism, not a cross-retailer purchase-history dashboard.

Visa agent-payment capabilities

Visa describes Intelligent Commerce features including agent-specific payment tokens, authenticated user instructions, commerce signals intended to support transaction tracking and dispute management, and transaction outcome notifications. Visa says the service is in development and deployment and may not be available in all markets. These are potential signals where implemented, not guaranteed fields on every card transaction.

Signed agent recognition

Visa’s Trusted Agent Protocol describes signed agent recognition, consumer and device identity, and payment-container information for browsing and payment interactions. A merchant that has not adopted the mechanism may ignore its signatures. Agent recognition therefore should not be assumed to appear in every retailer record.

How to compare tracking coverage before relying on it

Do not compare systems only by whether they say they “track purchases.” Check which records they can actually access and connect.

  • Record owner: Does the tool show retailer orders, PSP transactions, card-account entries, or only a summary from the agent interface?
  • Agent attribution: Does it preserve an agent identifier or signed interaction, or is the purchase indistinguishable from another checkout in the record?
  • Intent and controls: Is there an authenticated instruction, amount or merchant restriction, expiry, approval, or passkey step? Which of these is recorded for later review?
  • Lifecycle visibility: Can it show order acceptance or decline, payment authorization or posting, fulfillment, refund or return, and dispute outcomes—or only some of those events?
  • Coverage: Which merchants, PSPs, card networks, countries, markets and checkout channels participate? A capability described by a network or protocol does not establish availability at every merchant.
  • Reconciliation keys: Can you see a stable retailer order ID and a payment transaction reference that let you connect the records?

Availability is partner- and market-dependent

OpenAI’s Instant Checkout announcement described purchases by U.S. ChatGPT Free, Plus and Pro users from U.S. Etsy sellers, with Shopify merchants described as coming soon. It also described the initial checkout as supporting single-item purchases. Those were announcement-time details, not a guarantee of current availability. OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce Protocol guide says the protocol is open to implementation, while ChatGPT Instant Checkout is available to approved partners and involves merchant feed, checkout, payment integration, certification and production-access requirements.

Visa likewise qualifies Intelligent Commerce as in development and deployment, with availability potentially varying by market. Before relying on any agent-specific feature, verify that the retailer, checkout channel and payment setup you are using support it. Protocol availability alone does not mean a consumer-facing tracker can see all of your transactions.

What a practical tracking setup can and cannot do

For now, keeping the retailer confirmation, the payment entry and the original instruction together is the dependable baseline. It gives you separate evidence for what was ordered, what payment activity occurred, and what you authorized. Agent or network signals can make that comparison richer when the relevant parties implement them, but the cited OpenAI and Visa materials do not establish a single ledger that automatically joins purchases across all retailers and providers.
