Start by checking which OBS counter is rising: network-dropped frames point to the connection or bitrate; skipped frames due to encoding lag point to x264 overloading the CPU; and frames missed due to rendering lag point to GPU or scene workload. These symptoms can look alike on stream, but they need different fixes. Open OBS’s Stats dock during a representative test and target the counter that is actually increasing.
Identify the type of frame loss in OBS
Open the Stats dock in OBS while streaming or running a representative test. Watch for increases in these counters:

- Network dropped frames: OBS cannot maintain a stable connection to the remote ingest server or the connection cannot sustain the configured bitrate. OBS drops frames to avoid buffering and keep the stream playing. See the OBS connection troubleshooting guide.
- Skipped frames due to encoding lag: the CPU cannot encode the stream in time with the selected x264 workload. See the OBS encoding performance guide and OBS x264 guide.
- Frames missed due to rendering lag: OBS is not getting enough GPU capacity to compose and render its scenes.
Do not diagnose from the visual symptom alone. A choppy stream may involve any of the three. Bitrate reductions and Ethernet address the network branch, not x264 CPU overload; a faster x264 preset does not repair an unstable upload route.

Fix network-dropped frames
Check bitrate against stable upload capacity
Run an upload-speed test under conditions similar to your stream. OBS’s connection guide, dated 2024-09-30, suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point when setting bitrate; treat that as a starting estimate, not a guarantee. Other household traffic and variation in the route to YouTube can reduce the bandwidth actually available to the stream.

YouTube’s current H.264 live encoder guidance recommends these ingestion bitrates. They are platform recommendations, not proof that your connection can sustain them. The table’s corresponding minimums are included for reference.

Values are from YouTube Help’s H.264 live encoder settings, accessed 2026-10-03. If network drops rise, lower the OBS bitrate in measured steps and test again; choose a profile your connection sustains reliably rather than chasing a platform recommendation it cannot support.

Test a wired connection and isolate interference
- If you are on Wi-Fi, test with wired Ethernet. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. An Ethernet cable is only relevant to this network branch; it will not fix encoding or rendering lag.
- Temporarily check whether a VPN, firewall or antivirus, or bundled network-optimization software is interfering with OBS’s connection. Restore protections after testing and make only changes you understand.
- Check that network drivers are current. If the problem persists, investigate the router or modem, cable, network card, or ISP route rather than replacing hardware without evidence of a fault.
- On Windows, OBS’s network options include Network Optimizations and TCP Pacing; OBS notes that some users report improvement. IPv4-only can be used as a diagnostic test. If it makes no difference, return to the default IPv4/IPv6 setting.
If those checks do not resolve the issue, OBS advises contacting your ISP.

Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback
OBS can dynamically lower bitrate when congestion occurs, which may reduce network frame drops. It does not fix the underlying connection problem and can reduce video quality, so use it as a fallback rather than as proof that the route is healthy.

Fix skipped frames due to x264 encoding lag
x264 encoding is CPU-intensive. When the CPU cannot keep up with the selected output resolution, frame rate, and preset, OBS may skip frames, distort the image, or report “Encoding overloaded!”
- Reduce output resolution or frame rate. This lowers the amount of video x264 must encode. Test one change at a time.
- If encoding lag remains, select a faster x264 CPU preset. Faster presets use less CPU but are generally less compression-efficient, so image quality at the same bitrate may suffer.
- Test with your actual stream workload. The appropriate balance depends on your CPU, game or other activity, output resolution, frame rate, and motion or detail in the scene.
There is no single best x264 preset for every system. OBS’s x264 guide explicitly does not prescribe universal best settings; test your setup rather than copying a preset recommendation without matching its workload.

Fix frames missed due to rendering lag
Rendering lag concerns OBS’s GPU work to compose scenes, not the CPU’s x264 encoding workload. Try these steps if the rendering-lag counter is rising:

- Limit the game’s frame rate or enable V-Sync so it does not consume all available GPU capacity.
- Reduce game graphics settings and close other GPU-heavy applications.
- Reduce OBS output resolution or frame rate if necessary.
- Simplify scenes, sources, and filters. Sources can use resources even when they are not visible, and browser sources and filters can be resource-intensive.
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator. OBS says this can allow Windows to reserve GPU capacity for OBS; it is a possible fix, not a guarantee.
Check YouTube encoder settings and test the complete stream
YouTube automatically detects encoder settings by default. Its published guidance recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Use YouTube’s H.264 bitrate table as a platform reference, then confirm your own upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate.

- In OBS, check that the configured encoder settings match the output profile you intend to send to YouTube.
- Run a pre-stream test with movement and audio similar to the actual stream. A static test screen may not expose the same workload or connection behavior.
- Watch the OBS Stats counters during the test and monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages. If a counter rises, use the corresponding troubleshooting branch above.
- Change one setting at a time, then repeat the test. This makes it easier to identify which adjustment helped and what quality or performance trade-off it introduced.
YouTube’s live encoder documentation says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Its recommendations do not establish that a particular computer, encoder configuration, or internet route will work without testing.
